    Black Hole Vector

Another cool pic I found on Pinterest and converted to a pattern (made the lines thicker, for sanity's sake). 1/2" whiteboard (not quite as knotty as pine, but REALLY soft), Pegas #3MG blades (3x, I think).

A lovely pattern by Jim Blume. I couldn't resist cutting it. Straight off the saw so no finish or frame yet. Done on an A4 sheet of 3mm b/b and #2 Niqua blades.

  3. This is one of those things that as an Admin, I don't know how to handle. This news breaks my heart and it has personally affected me in ways that I wasn't expecting. He was a good friend, a fixture at SSV, and I'll miss him a lot. This thread evolved from our fellow scroller sharing some personal information that progressed to a tragic end. Instead of creating a new thread as a tribute, I wanted to maintain this one since so many has shared their grief and condolences here. It doesn't seem fair to put people through that again. I also moved it into the General Scroll Saw forum so it doesn't get lost. Be at peace, my friend.

  5. I messaged his daughter to tell her and all of Les's family how sad we all are and to let them know how he effected each of our lives. And that he was loved by many here at The Village. She is very greatful and says thanks very much.

  7. Indeed, it is so sad to hear, when it could have been prevented so easily. I know most people don't think as I do but when it is possible to do things to protect ourselves and we don't do them is way beyond my understanding as to why? I know the family is devastated and my heart goes out to them during this difficult time. Just my $.02

    Another Repeat

This is another repeat cut for me as it was commissioned. Another Steve Good pattern cut from a 1 X 12 pine finished with natural stain and multiple coats of clear gloss lightly sanded between each coat. The back is 1/4 ply painted black. I used a Pegas #2/0 spiral and #3 MFG. This was really my first experience with the spiral blade. It took some getting use to but eventually got the hang of it. I did notice cutting pine the blade would pause and then advance quickly then pause again as it traveled through the grain in the board. I also noticed you would have to be careful not to let the blade drift with the grain rather than following the line. Anyway, this catches me up on my commissions. Next weekend I'm cutting something I've been wanting to cut.

  9. I know this is simple, but a Co-worker asked me to cut something for her, for a friends wedding. She sent me a pic of a lotus flower with a symbol in it. TD and Grampa. I showed both to her and she chose TD's. So I cut it from some 1/4" hard maple. I think it's about 8x8 inches in size. I asked the lady what the meaning of the lotus and the symbol was to her, and this is what she told me. Always interesting to learn new stuff. Lotus flower is considered very auspicious in Hindu religion. Lot of our Gods are shown seated on the lotus flower. It also teaches us how it blooms in the muddy waters but the leaves and the flower is always clean and pure. That's how we should stay in this world. Not to get bothered by the ugliness of people and this world. Symbol Om - Universal sound. When you make that sound it generates vibration in our body that purifies our mind. Here's a google explanation: a mystic syllable, considered the most sacred mantra in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. It appears at the beginning and end of most Sanskrit recitations, prayers, and texts.

  10. I posted these two projects previously but they were a smaller version. I was commissioned to do these in a larger size. Both are Steve Good patterns and were cut from 1 X 12 pine with 1/4 backing. They were both stained with natural Minwax and 3 coats of clear gloss.

  11. I sat and wept at this news. Les was always someone who would listen and help. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him. You will be sadly missed my friend and my heart goes out to Faye and your daughter at this most awful of times. We never met but I feel like I've lost another much loved friend. RIP. I hope someone who knows his family can copy all the heartfelt messages that are on here, I'm sure it will be a little comfort to know that he was so loved and respected amongst the scrolling community.

Awesome job. You even made my pattern look grand. Always rewarding to me to see what folks are able to do with these patterns. Thanks for showing us your work. Also, to save folks from having to hunt through the files for the pattern, here you go.

  13. This my second cutting of this pattern... It is my favorite "Eagle" pattern. I cut it before in a piece of Black Walnut. This time it is cut in a piece of Monkey Pot I purchased from Ocooch Hardwood. It is 16" x 12.5" x .5". It is pretty wood,,, a little softer than walnut... I gave my first cutting to my best friend sometime ago and have wanted to do it again ever since. I plan on framing this one when I can find some lumber I can afford... This is a pattern is out of the SSWC magazine, in all their wisdom didn't even put it in the foldout patterns section, they put it over two pages in the mag so it is even more difficult to make a decent copy of... But well worth the effort. It is made from a painting by Carol Cavlaris, called "Spirit of the Wind. Like I say,, my favorite eagle pattern..I would love to have on the same format wit the American Bald Eagle... If I ever find the right piece of some burl wood,,, I will cut it again.

  15. I started this project almost 2 months ago but had to set it aside after a few issues required me to remodel my bathroom and then I had to complete 2 commission projects. This is a Steve Good pattern and is cut with 1/4 Birch using Pegas 2/0 MFG. The back is 1/4 ply. The front is finished with natural stain while the back is finished with dark walnut. It then received several coats of clear gloss. The fine cuts were a little tricky and I had to keep reminding myself to let the blades do the work and not push it.

  16. Folks ask me if I could make patterns fit pieces of wood they have available. Of course scaling or changing the size of the pattern is one option many folks use. But here are some other options to consider. Taking a portion of a pattern and cropping it so as to fit a narrow board, or even making it into a circle or oval using your own thought processes and individual creativity can multiply all the patterns you have collected into many more options. Or how about liking the Indian woman in this pattern and wanting it to stand alone? Just crop out everything you don't want. Use your imagination and enjoy the journey.

    Friends are family

I know I've been slacking this week.. LOL So here is the latest one. It's 1/4" cherry, and is about 9x10 ish.. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades. It has a ply backer. I was trying to see what color backer I wanted, and I hit a scrap piece with 4 colors.. Showing it to the GF we decided it would be kinda cool to use all 4, so I did the same pattern on the backer as the test.. I think it looks kinda cool. Oh, and it's a Sheila Landry Design pattern.. DUH!! LOL

  18. Decided to make this Compass Version with Color. Actually I like Color and a Good Friend decided on the color scheme. Was Good, so here is my Finished Compass. Hope all will like..............Danny :+} EDIT.... When this pic was taken I DID NOT HAVE IT GLUED. This one I made the N-E-S-W IN RED.... I like this better. ??

  19. I converted this pattern I found on-line and modified it to make it an 11” square scroll saw pattern. Had to add some bridges and modified the pumpkin shape a little to make the letters to read better. Both the cut panel and backer is ¼” thk BB Ply cut with Pegas #0 MGT R blades. The panels were hand painted with Acrylic Artist Paints and protected with multiple coats of clear gloss spray Polyurethane, as this piece will hang outside on the front of my home. And again, the Frame is Poplar…oh yeah, that’s right, there is no frame Critique and comments always appreciated. EDIT PS: Just sitting here looking at the pic and realized this would be a great pattern to use with a back lit orange plastic backer.

I finally got of my behind and did some work in the shed, worth posting. The letters I have left over from when I used to make and sell these.I probably have more then 100. My Daughter picked out the name, for a friends baby and I had to make VW to pull it. Managed to find my old jigs and patterns and rather enjoyed it. I made three VW's so a couple spare. I had a steam engine and a truck also to pull the names.

I wanted a unique name for these; My first name is Wichita, I named my business Wich and Wynn's Wonders (my ex-wife's name is Wynn), I shortened it to Wich's Wonders after the divorce. So, ta da, I'm going to call them Wich Sticks. These are Al Baggetta patterns; 1 inch square dowel, poplar, dark walnut and cherry stain, #1 polar FD blade. FYI My method of folding a 15" patterns is to use my 18" HF sheet metal brake, works like a charm. The sticks:

  24. Hi all I wanted to share an email that Les (Rockytime) sent to me. He was into hobby trains which I just started. Pasted from email... -=-=-=-=-= Thanks for the message. I eventually had thought about a garden railroad. I called it "Mule Muffin & Western." Age and other things sort of got into the way. I modeled mostly in HOn3 but also dabbled in N abs On3 scales. Loved the hobby. Northwest Shortline used to refer people to me to cut custom gears for locomotives that had nylon gears which had broken. Modeling consumed most of my life. I'd love to do it all again. Good luck with your railroad. Yes, for the price of a planer I can purchase a lot of hardwood. I found that Ochooch sells 1/8 and 1/4 inch hardwood so I'm all set.

    Blade Storage

I came up with something different the other day after looking on Facebook. It showed tooth brush holders being used for something other than tooth brushes, which started me thinking. I know dangerous, right? Anyway I have 4 blade types that I use a lot and the are stored in round containers sitting flat an a trolley next to my saw, so when I need a blade they have usually rolled around and I have to check most of them to get the right one. So I brought just one holder to see if it worked and it does, very nicely. Here are a couple of photos. I know it may not be ideal for everyone but someone may find it useful. Oh plus you can increase the size of the hole at the top if you wish to hang them on a hook. Marg

  43. As commented in a previous topic, my Excalibur saw was breaking 2/0 blades. (I use 2/0 blades for marquetry.) Leaving slack on the blade before tightening solves the problem, sort of: blades do break every so often, when there is not enough slack; and, the tension on the blade is erratic, sometimes too slack. The saw was not giving warms and fuzzies. Sawing was not fun. I took the plunge and ordered the Pégas chuck-heads. Installation was a breeze, once I found a 7mm wrench and a 3mm hex key. I am happy to report that I am not breaking blades and that the tension on the blades is consistent. Also, the saw seems to run more smoothly; this could be a figment of my imagination. xocd
