  1. I know this is simple, but a Co-worker asked me to cut something for her, for a friends wedding. She sent me a pic of a lotus flower with a symbol in it. TD and Grampa. I showed both to her and she chose TD's. So I cut it from some 1/4" hard maple. I think it's about 8x8 inches in size. I asked the lady what the meaning of the lotus and the symbol was to her, and this is what she told me. Always interesting to learn new stuff. Lotus flower is considered very auspicious in Hindu religion. Lot of our Gods are shown seated on the lotus flower. It also teaches us how it blooms in the muddy waters but the leaves and the flower is always clean and pure. That's how we should stay in this world. Not to get bothered by the ugliness of people and this world. Symbol Om - Universal sound. When you make that sound it generates vibration in our body that purifies our mind. Here's a google explanation: a mystic syllable, considered the most sacred mantra in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. It appears at the beginning and end of most Sanskrit recitations, prayers, and texts.

  2. This is one of those things that as an Admin, I don't know how to handle. This news breaks my heart and it has personally affected me in ways that I wasn't expecting. He was a good friend, a fixture at SSV, and I'll miss him a lot. This thread evolved from our fellow scroller sharing some personal information that progressed to a tragic end. Instead of creating a new thread as a tribute, I wanted to maintain this one since so many has shared their grief and condolences here. It doesn't seem fair to put people through that again. I also moved it into the General Scroll Saw forum so it doesn't get lost. Be at peace, my friend.

  4. Just wondered if any Dr. Who fans on here know what this creature in the middle is, and why for safety reasons, I placed it here. *This was my first cutting since hearing about Les. I know he'll be thought of often and by many as I did while at my saw.

  5. I converted this pattern I found on-line and modified it to make it an 11” square scroll saw pattern. Had to add some bridges and modified the pumpkin shape a little to make the letters to read better. Both the cut panel and backer is ¼” thk BB Ply cut with Pegas #0 MGT R blades. The panels were hand painted with Acrylic Artist Paints and protected with multiple coats of clear gloss spray Polyurethane, as this piece will hang outside on the front of my home. And again, the Frame is Poplar…oh yeah, that’s right, there is no frame Critique and comments always appreciated. EDIT PS: Just sitting here looking at the pic and realized this would be a great pattern to use with a back lit orange plastic backer.

  6. This is the first project I have completed in my new enlarged shop. Also the first project that I only used spiral blades. Took me 3 to be exact.

  7. I sat and wept at this news. Les was always someone who would listen and help. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him. You will be sadly missed my friend and my heart goes out to Faye and your daughter at this most awful of times. We never met but I feel like I've lost another much loved friend. RIP. I hope someone who knows his family can copy all the heartfelt messages that are on here, I'm sure it will be a little comfort to know that he was so loved and respected amongst the scrolling community.

  8. I started this project almost 2 months ago but had to set it aside after a few issues required me to remodel my bathroom and then I had to complete 2 commission projects. This is a Steve Good pattern and is cut with 1/4 Birch using Pegas 2/0 MFG. The back is 1/4 ply. The front is finished with natural stain while the back is finished with dark walnut. It then received several coats of clear gloss. The fine cuts were a little tricky and I had to keep reminding myself to let the blades do the work and not push it.

    Friends are family

I know I've been slacking this week.. LOL So here is the latest one. It's 1/4" cherry, and is about 9x10 ish.. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades. It has a ply backer. I was trying to see what color backer I wanted, and I hit a scrap piece with 4 colors.. Showing it to the GF we decided it would be kinda cool to use all 4, so I did the same pattern on the backer as the test.. I think it looks kinda cool. Oh, and it's a Sheila Landry Design pattern.. DUH!! LOL

I finally got of my behind and did some work in the shed, worth posting. The letters I have left over from when I used to make and sell these.I probably have more then 100. My Daughter picked out the name, for a friends baby and I had to make VW to pull it. Managed to find my old jigs and patterns and rather enjoyed it. I made three VW's so a couple spare. I had a steam engine and a truck also to pull the names.

  13. I posted these two projects previously but they were a smaller version. I was commissioned to do these in a larger size. Both are Steve Good patterns and were cut from 1 X 12 pine with 1/4 backing. They were both stained with natural Minwax and 3 coats of clear gloss.

    Patterns Don't fit?

Late to the party, but I put all my patterns through Inkscape and resize to fit my wood. Turn everything Grey with a red outline that is the width of my blade and bingo. !!

  16. Indeed, it is so sad to hear, when it could have been prevented so easily. I know most people don't think as I do but when it is possible to do things to protect ourselves and we don't do them is way beyond my understanding as to why? I know the family is devastated and my heart goes out to them during this difficult time. Just my $.02

  17. This is my favorite band Dream Theater. Due to chemo side effects, I have no feeling in my hands and feet so this is about as fancy is I get for a while. At least I get to enjoy all the amazing art posted here. Happy scrolling all and God bless

  24. Excellent artistry, Frank. Yes, that would be difficult to frame... unless you added an additional backer board. Hope you post a picture if you add the lighting.

  25. Wow at first glance I thought the names were on a metal plate. The shiney yellow color just made it like metal. Oh and the perfect lettering made it look machine made. I had to zoom in to see the perfect cutting. You did a great job.

    Another Repeat

This is another repeat cut for me as it was commissioned. Another Steve Good pattern cut from a 1 X 12 pine finished with natural stain and multiple coats of clear gloss lightly sanded between each coat. The back is 1/4 ply painted black. I used a Pegas #2/0 spiral and #3 MFG. This was really my first experience with the spiral blade. It took some getting use to but eventually got the hang of it. I did notice cutting pine the blade would pause and then advance quickly then pause again as it traveled through the grain in the board. I also noticed you would have to be careful not to let the blade drift with the grain rather than following the line. Anyway, this catches me up on my commissions. Next weekend I'm cutting something I've been wanting to cut.

    Black Hole Vector

Another cool pic I found on Pinterest and converted to a pattern (made the lines thicker, for sanity's sake). 1/2" whiteboard (not quite as knotty as pine, but REALLY soft), Pegas #3MG blades (3x, I think).

    Pegas Chuck Heads

I am a big proponent for the Pegas clamp upgrade. But in the mean time has anyone ever tried to squeeze the stock clamps back together? It should be doable as long as they are not cracked.

  40. I messaged his daughter to tell her and all of Les's family how sad we all are and to let them know how he effected each of our lives. And that he was loved by many here at The Village. She is very greatful and says thanks very much.

  41. Ray, thank you for the update. Like so many, my heart is saddened at the loss of our friend Les. I was greatly concerned this might be the outcome when you all said he was being put on a vent unfortunately. My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to his wife Faye and their daughters and their family. He was a regular contributor here in the Village whose wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by me and I know many of us here. I pray that his family can find peace and comfort in this trying time and I am glad to hear that Faye is doing better and hope she continues to heal. Ray, I am glad to hear that you have gotten your vaccine.

  49. I bought 25 2X4 studs today at Home Depot for about $3.50 ea. About two months ago I priced them at almost $8ea. Plywood is still a bit high, but coming down as well. This is in Central Florida.

  50. I haven't been following it closely, but I just checked prices on Lowes website. A standard pre-cut 2x4 stud is $3.48. A 2x4x10' is $7.88 and a 2x4x16' is $10.52. A 4x8 sheet of 7/16" OSB is $13.85. I think these prices are considerably lower than they were a few months ago, but I wasn't really tracking the prices, so I don't know how they compare to 2020 or 2019 prices.
