Big bird, Condor
Roberta Moreton and 3 others reacted to preprius for a topic
I live near a Condor reserve area. Pinnacles National Park. This is one of the sites where they steal the eggs that the condors lay, so the condors will lay another egg. They hatch and raise the bird in captivity but release them when the are old enough. Humans captured all known California condors in 1966. There was like less than 50 of them. Now there is over 1000 of them. Every one of them is gps tagged. So i decided to make a easy scroll saw outline and inlay the white wood aspen for the under wing. The local vet does work on wildlife and does work on vultures. So I will donate this to him. Behind the wood piece On the wall is the picture I stuck to the wood to be used as pattern. Because the inlay fit flush only from the back, it looks like I turned the head the other way. Size is about 8 inches wing span. Wood is 0.75" thk Poplar for the bird. Aspen 0.5" is white pattern on wing. General finish water based stain brown on poplar then satin coat. Only satin on aspen. Actual wingspan of Condors is about 10.5ft. Lesson learned... 1) poplar needs prestain conditioner. I did this after the inlay was cut. This caused wood swelling and inlay was very tight. Fix: precondition the wood before cutting. Both woods the aspen and poplar. 2) using poplar caused more work due to staining, pre conditioning. the wood slightly bowed after conditioning which caused sanding on flat surface to sand off the stain on edges. Fix.. don't use poplar. Use dark brown wood that stains well.4 points -

Circular Scroll Saw Designs by Charles Hand - Elaborate Plaque
frankorona and 2 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
This one is called "Elaborate Plaque". Probably about 16 hours' worth of cutting (half of that drilling pilot holes, it seems). 1/2" whiteboard, Pegas #3MG blades (four, I think). Sanded to 220grit, Minwax DarkWalnut stain. Pattern is from Charles Hand's "Circular Scroll Saw Designs" book, found it on Amazon after someone else posted a pattern from it here on the forums. I'd recommend reading the first page or two, there's a couple of steps you can take (quick and easy) and they'll email you PDF versions of any of the patterns. I asked for and received all of the patterns from the book, since I'm not sure which ones I'll eventually cut (I have two more patterns printed, prepped, drilled, and ready to go). Easy pattern to cut, really, if you're not afraid of angles (if you are, this one will give you PLENTY of practice). The hardest part was the mind-numbing center rings. The center circle was easy, just cut the interior circle, then go back and cut the spokes. The first ring of "petals"......well, that's why I have an audio book going while I cut. Made it less tedious. Not a joy, just.....less tedious. LOL3 points -

Must admit I've never had this problem, even on the 'fussiest of patterns', but as I've said, I use this method to convert my black/white patterns to grey/red so perhaps because the original patterns were good, this method works great for me. The 0.25 outline works best for me as it's the size that fits my blade and the one I find easiest to follow. Everyone does it differently to suit themselves.2 points

Coin banks for children ?
Roberta Moreton and one other reacted to meflick for a topic
I've made the same one as Denny shown above. I also have some other plans for some others like a train. Most, if not all of the ones I have were also by Paul Meisel. A few of them have been in the SSWC Magazine over the years and is where I got some of them. You can go to the Magazine's Article Index page and search for him by name. He is in 20 different magazines looks like. Not all of them will be the coin banks and I am not sure how many of them are http://scrollsawer.com/article-index/ and here is link to his website showing a lot of different coin banks he has available. https://www.meiselwoodhobby.com/Products/ViewCategory.aspx?ID=2993&Path=53 Scrolleronline also has several coin banks http://www.scrolleronline.com/category/s?keyword=bank2 points -
I started this project almost 2 months ago but had to set it aside after a few issues required me to remodel my bathroom and then I had to complete 2 commission projects. This is a Steve Good pattern and is cut with 1/4 Birch using Pegas 2/0 MFG. The back is 1/4 ply. The front is finished with natural stain while the back is finished with dark walnut. It then received several coats of clear gloss. The fine cuts were a little tricky and I had to keep reminding myself to let the blades do the work and not push it.1 point

Hello Everyone, Yesterday I bought a Porter Cable scroll saw from Lowe’s. I used it last night and it worked great except for a very slight vibration. I got some rubber to put under the legs and under the bolts where the saw is attached to the stand. Hopefully that helps with the vibration. But anyway,....tonight I head out to the shed to add the rubber and the saw is squeaking. Wasn’t squeaking yesterday when I used it for a few small projects... It sounds like it is coming from the upper arm pivot point/bearings. Is there anyway I can fix this short of taking it back? I bought the last one and I’d really like to start scrolling! I have attached a video of the squeak. Thanks for your help! -Jason https://youtu.be/fJF7SC-GEzs1 point

so when you go to buy the new led fixtures / bulbs take a video to see if they have strobe effect. Before you buy them.1 point

Did factory line work. These machines come down lines with people doing the same mind numbing task hour after hour. Eventually things are missed and you get 'lemons'. Another machine would probably be fine, or troubleshoot and fix it, if that's what is fun. RJF1 point -
I used to do a lot of scroll sawing live videos using my iPhone as the camera.. The new LED bulbs I put on my magnifier lights make black lines and shadows in my videos and make them basically unviewable.. I don't see this with the naked eye but the camera sure picks up the pulse. I've been going to buy a standard Fluorescent bulb to put into one of my magnifiers so I can get back to doing videos of me sawing.. I'm wondering if this is what you are seeing with the naked eye somewhat.. some of these LED bulbs I do see really fast flickering.. most times I don't notice it.. kind of like when the fluorescents start going bad they sometimes flicker.1 point

I know this is an old post but I thought for sure it was the top bushing with the large Allen key and polished the pin with 1500 grit wet paper and hit it with white lithium, it stopped it only for a bit, frustrated I pulled the back cover off and sprayed the 2 small bushings with white grease and about 5 seconds after I turned it on quiet and vibration....well not free but mu h better.1 point -

An old discussion, but others might find this. The brass is a soft metal commonly used in bushings to allow the metal connections to move but not bind. They are commonly used in applications like motorcycle swing arms between the chassis and the swing arm (holds the rear wheel). If you find excessive blade breakage at the bottom arm, it's likely the blade isn't pivoting properly.1 point

I might have to do that. I had a customer ask for a custom order to be made from maple yesterday. Maple isn't available locally. The cheapest I could find where they would ship was $120 for 10bf delivered.1 point

I do the conversion to Red/Grey using the "Trace Path" command often. Works great, but there are a few things to watch out for. It does not produce an EXACT copy of the original. It tends to treat pointy intersections as curves and will sometimes merge adjacent line work that are very close together on the original. For original JPG or other bit map files that are composed of crisp and sharp lines, it works great however, if the original file is at all fuzzy you can get a lot of inccurate duplication. I have found a lot of patterns offered free in jpg format must be copies of copies or have been produced form screenshots, thus loosing resolution. When patterns are purchased form an orinal pattern maker, or their seller, the patterns are usually electronic copeis of the original and good a clear. And, just a BTW, I make my red lines .005 inches and use a 20% Grey fill. I don't try to split the line, but will have the edge of the blade cut follow the line, one side or the other, depending on how close adjacent cut lines are. However my general rule is "Stay in the Grey" when the cut out area is grey.1 point

Yes, was a ham, still have my license (N5SI) but do not get on the air often these days, mainly because the sunspot cycle is low and do not get very good propagation. I also love the look of this sign and might try to do it with my call sign.1 point

Don't forget that Travis has posted several videos on Inkscape and GIMP under Resources/Village University. I am like Barb in that I learn better by seeing. I've just started playing with Inkscape and can change patterns to gray/red. Now I'm wanting to take the next step and try some basic pictures. Thanks Brenda for the tutorial. It's always nice to see how others reach the end results. Sometimes the steps may be a little different but the final outcome is the same.1 point

If there are few or none. A approach would be the specific shape, animal, like stacked vase patterns. Create to solid outer shapes and stacked layers as thick as you like.RJF1 point -
My take on this: one more thing for the bag of tricks. I've seen a circle cutting jig on youtube, the author uses spiral blades to eliminate drift, spirals could be used with this as well.1 point

I don’t think I would ever use it. I have a miter with a 60 tooth Diablo blade and if the straight line isn’t as long, always have sanders. There is someone though that can use this.1 point

You are more than welcome, I hope it helps. I'm not really 'computer literate', but I honestly struggle seeing a black blade on a black outline so I forced myself to learn how to do the grey/red patterns so that I could carry on enjoying scrolling.1 point

Friend wanted a lotus
Woodrush reacted to WolfmoonCT for a topic
I know this is simple, but a Co-worker asked me to cut something for her, for a friends wedding. She sent me a pic of a lotus flower with a symbol in it. TD and Grampa. I showed both to her and she chose TD's. So I cut it from some 1/4" hard maple. I think it's about 8x8 inches in size. I asked the lady what the meaning of the lotus and the symbol was to her, and this is what she told me. Always interesting to learn new stuff. Lotus flower is considered very auspicious in Hindu religion. Lot of our Gods are shown seated on the lotus flower. It also teaches us how it blooms in the muddy waters but the leaves and the flower is always clean and pure. That's how we should stay in this world. Not to get bothered by the ugliness of people and this world. Symbol Om - Universal sound. When you make that sound it generates vibration in our body that purifies our mind. Here's a google explanation: a mystic syllable, considered the most sacred mantra in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. It appears at the beginning and end of most Sanskrit recitations, prayers, and texts.1 point -

I came up with something different the other day after looking on Facebook. It showed tooth brush holders being used for something other than tooth brushes, which started me thinking. I know dangerous, right? Anyway I have 4 blade types that I use a lot and the are stored in round containers sitting flat an a trolley next to my saw, so when I need a blade they have usually rolled around and I have to check most of them to get the right one. So I brought just one holder to see if it worked and it does, very nicely. Here are a couple of photos. I know it may not be ideal for everyone but someone may find it useful. Oh plus you can increase the size of the hole at the top if you wish to hang them on a hook. Marg1 point
