Wedding sign
Roberta Moreton and 7 others reacted to Jim McDonald for a topic
Back in late winter, I said I was going to make a sign for my son's wedding. Knew nothing about making signs, but knew I could cut and paint. My wife thought I was jumping the gun when I started cutting in early spring, but I got this in the store bought frame about a week before my bypass surgery. Less than a month to go before the wedding and I have nothing left to cut for the big day. 16 x 20 oak veneer MDF, poplar of various thicknesses and some 1/8" plywood.8 points -

Dogwood Box
Tomanydogs and 6 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
A Dogwood Box pattern by Diana Thompson from one of her books. This one was cut at home on the EX21 using FD Polar #9 and #5 blades. Even though I sell Pegas, this was completed at home with the few FD blades I had leftover. The box is Walnut and the Dogwood flower is Hard Maple. The finish is one coat spray Shellac and two coats spray Clear Satin Lacquer.7 points -

This was another stencil pattern I found on-line and converted to a scroll saw pattern. It was actually completed about the same time I finished King and Queen that I posted a few weeks ago but it took me awhile to get around to making the frame. The cut panel is maple affixed to a Mahogany Backer. The cutting was not very difficult although the whiskers are not very well done. A little bit the pattern’s fault and a lot my cutting fault. Cutting was done using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. The cut panel and backer was hand paint using Artist Acrylic paints. Frame is typical 1 ¾” wide Poplar, stained with Minwax Early American and finishe with multiple coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. Comments and critique is always welcome.6 points -
Today I made ... (drum roll) !!! Firewood !! Went to my workshop today to make a Tiger for an upcoming event where it would be 'raffled' for charity. Now, I've cut this pattern a dozen times, it's not a difficult cut, but could I do it today ? No... So I've decided to go and do my ironing instead, keep your fingers cross that my dear husband has some shirts left by the time I've finished.5 points

Every so often a friend sends me patterns that he likes and wants me to try. I believe it is an H. Botas pattern as there was a small amount of name visible in the corner of the pattern. This was one that I've been holding for a bit now as some of the lines were so thin I wasn't sure enough of my skill to cut it. But I finally did and I think it turned out fantastic! 1/2 inch birch ply cut with an Olson #5 reverse tooth. 18 inches wide.4 points

Steve Good 5-layer compass
Jim Blume and 2 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Finally got down to cutting Steve Good's compass pattern. Not a difficult pattern to cut, unless you hate angles. 1/4 bbply, #2/0 Pegas MG blades. Didn't stack-cut this, as I had to wait for my next trip to Lowes for wood for two of the layers. Ended up using 1/2" ply for the blank backer, I was worried about hangar nails/screw breaking into a cut part, but its thick enough where a hangar would naturally fall that I shouldn't have worried. Dark layers are Minwax "Honey" and the light is a new one for me, "Early American".3 points -

Haven't posted in a while. Was busy cutting ornaments, and I need to take new pics of them... But here are two new cuts. The Laundry room is 3/8" Ash about 8x10 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart is 1/4" Quilted Maple. It's about 8x8 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart finish was not dry when I took the pic. The ornaments are about 2x3 inches and 1/4" thick Ash. All of them are Sheila Landry Designs.3 points -

Since joining a few days ago, I have been filling my spare time prowling and reading what folks here are doing. I am having a good time seeing your projects. I also like to see what saws folks use and read their tips. I decided to post a picture of my saw; it is rather old but still chugs along and problem free.3 points -
Yep, it's that kind of day. ! Tony only wears cotton shirts so iron I must. or he turns up bare chested which at his age is not a pretty sight3 points

Hey Ralph, even Pegas blade clamps need maintenance. The tips of the thump screw need to be dressed with 220 grit sand paper. Here’s how I do it. I use a square piece of 3/8” wood about two or three inches square. Using a drill press, drill a hole in the center just smaller then the diameter of the threads of the thumb screw. You need to use a drill press to insure the hole is perpendicular. Then screw the thumb screw into the the hole in the wood blank insuring it screws in perpendicular. Screw it in till the the tip just barely protrudes The bottom of the wood. Place a small piece of 220 grit sand paper on your saw table and sand the bottom of the wood block. This will dress the tip of the thumb screw. You want it to be dull and flat. Or you can buy new tips from Denny. as far as the noise, I can’t help you there. Chances are all the bearings need to be lubed. The grease in the bearings has probably dried out from sitting in a hot storage room for a year. Or, you can buy a new saw!2 points

Well I have been a little busy lately, After I made the 2000 Vette for my Cousin and Popeye. I thought I would use up a lot of scrap I have been piling up, and do some painting. Something I don't do to very often. I have never made these to sell. Gonna try it tomorrow at the Flea Market. I hope they go over we well. Keeping my fingers toes and eyes crossed, well maybe not my eyes I need to drive Wish me Luck, Everyone have a Great Weekend.1 point

Another way to look at the whisker area, is that the puma is eating grass. The top left grass tuft shows a little white on bottom. So Puma has got down to the bottom of grass tuft. Or the white whisker area could be water splashing. Ok I know I am stretching the story the pic tells. I just make up stories to cover up mishaps. In no way do I want to detract this great piece. It shows an action shot of nature which I always enjoy.1 point

EX 21 blade slipping out.
OCtoolguy reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
I have experienced this. I cleaned everything to remove the oil from the manufacturing process. I use denatured alcohol and it works well for me.1 point -
How old is the EX? There were some issues and Ray offered free replacement parts if you would do the work. Not too hard to do. That is regarding noise. On the blade slip, the top thumb screw to tighten is on the right. Switch the bottom one to the left side. Also, lightly sand or buff or de-grease your blades. Switching the bottom made a big difference for me. And change the tips regularly.1 point

Another thing that has been lost is taking pride in a job well done no matter what the pay. I was taught that if I did a good job I'd be compensated accordingly. I've always tried to give it my all.1 point

The answer to the labor problem is simple. The Fed should stop sending out checks! They should also take "minimum wage" out of our lexicon. Once folks start realizing they need to work to survive, they'll take any job at any pay rate. My Dad worked for $0.10/hr during the depression. The pay rate should be based on ability & quality. Get back to Real thinking and not fantasy! JMHO!1 point
