  1. Finally got down to cutting Steve Good's compass pattern. Not a difficult pattern to cut, unless you hate angles. 1/4 bbply, #2/0 Pegas MG blades. Didn't stack-cut this, as I had to wait for my next trip to Lowes for wood for two of the layers. Ended up using 1/2" ply for the blank backer, I was worried about hangar nails/screw breaking into a cut part, but its thick enough where a hangar would naturally fall that I shouldn't have worried. Dark layers are Minwax "Honey" and the light is a new one for me, "Early American".

  2. Back in late winter, I said I was going to make a sign for my son's wedding. Knew nothing about making signs, but knew I could cut and paint. My wife thought I was jumping the gun when I started cutting in early spring, but I got this in the store bought frame about a week before my bypass surgery. Less than a month to go before the wedding and I have nothing left to cut for the big day. 16 x 20 oak veneer MDF, poplar of various thicknesses and some 1/8" plywood.

    3 New ones done.

Haven't posted in a while. Was busy cutting ornaments, and I need to take new pics of them... But here are two new cuts. The Laundry room is 3/8" Ash about 8x10 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart is 1/4" Quilted Maple. It's about 8x8 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart finish was not dry when I took the pic. The ornaments are about 2x3 inches and 1/4" thick Ash. All of them are Sheila Landry Designs.

  6. Every so often a friend sends me patterns that he likes and wants me to try. I believe it is an H. Botas pattern as there was a small amount of name visible in the corner of the pattern. This was one that I've been holding for a bit now as some of the lines were so thin I wasn't sure enough of my skill to cut it. But I finally did and I think it turned out fantastic! 1/2 inch birch ply cut with an Olson #5 reverse tooth. 18 inches wide.

    plate stand.

I showed the Tiger to my friend, who is running the raffle for which it was made and he said. "Does it have a stand?" Oh, grief, give an inch take a mile !!! But to be honest I suppose it needed one as having a 'paper' backer it's quite a 'delicate' thing and would not do well with a 'hanger' So, I was looking on Ebay to see if I could find any 'cheap + cheerful' stands that I could put the Tiger on, when in walks Tony and says ''why don't you make one'' it can't be that difficult !! So off I went to search for a pattern,, I found this one on Steve Goods site and made it out of some scrap plywood. I don't think it turned out too badly myself but must admit cutting long straight lines is not my forte.

  8. Since joining a few days ago, I have been filling my spare time prowling and reading what folks here are doing. I am having a good time seeing your projects. I also like to see what saws folks use and read their tips. I decided to post a picture of my saw; it is rather old but still chugs along and problem free.

  9. Over the 4th of July weekend my wife made me an apple pie, I made a rack of ribs on the Traeger, and I cut a baseball piece! This Hank Aaron piece is an Al Baggetta pattern done in Red Oak with Lacquer finish. Several Pegas #1 & #3 blades gave their lives for this.

This was another stencil pattern I found on-line and converted to a scroll saw pattern. It was actually completed about the same time I finished King and Queen that I posted a few weeks ago but it took me awhile to get around to making the frame. The cut panel is maple affixed to a Mahogany Backer. The cutting was not very difficult although the whiskers are not very well done. A little bit the pattern’s fault and a lot my cutting fault. Cutting was done using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. The cut panel and backer was hand paint using Artist Acrylic paints. Frame is typical 1 ¾” wide Poplar, stained with Minwax Early American and finishe with multiple coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. Comments and critique is always welcome.

I purchased the saw from Seyco while I was still on active duty. Cost me more than I made in a month but worth it. Made in Canada and it has never let me down. My 'projects' have all been small, give aways for children. Animals and small puzzles for little hands. I will see what I can find and when I start back up I will definitely post a pic or two.

    Giraffe.

I've always 'cut' as a hobby. Something to keep me entertained through my retirement. I've usually cut whatever took my fancy. I enjoy seeing 'something' appear out of what is essentially a plain piece of wood, it gives me lots of pleasure. However, I was asked to do this for a friends wife, but, not only that, I was told on Saturday evening that it's her birthday on Wednesday so would it be ready by then ??? I've cut a 'simpler' version of what was required. I must admit though that 'rushing' to get it cut/glued/oiled/varnished. was not enjoyable. This picture is what I've done today, and the pieces are just resting on top of one another. I now have a tremendous respect for those that do this for a living. Cutting to order and working to deadlines is not for me. I take my hat off to all those 'workers' out there. !!

  28. The idea is unique to me. Hope it works. At worst you you lose a couple blades and a little wood. Like Thomas Edison said, " I didn't fail, I found a 1000 ways it didn't work.' Best wishes for success.

Welcome, Old Sarge. As Lawson56 said, the members here are happy to provide tips, advice and experience about scrolling... and we'll feed you some other stuff on things other than scroll! Nice setup. I'm actually new to scrolling and looking to upgrade saws soon.

  36. supply and demand - charge what the market will bear - you can always go lower . . . or hold out for that person who LOVES IT and has the money to buy it. Reminds me of the cake making market - I think reputation can help you when it comes to pricing - if you produce good works, and you do - you will increase you chances of making a sale. Also, how does this piece compare to your other works - time to make and materials cost wise? my two pennies worth. regardless, good luck and keep up the good works.

  38. Here is my weak spot... I can scroll, but I can't always look at a picture and see a pattern.. To me that is the major difference between me, have a pattern, cut out the black, save the white, I can do that pretty good and You, see a picture,,, as an artist, and make it work for a great picture.. Awesome!!

  39. Great cutting! No not my style of pattern, but I know great cutting when I see it... Lot of grain in that piece of plywood... I don't see that often.. It all adds up to a great picture...

This is my first portrait cut and also my first real effort using spiral blades outside of puzzle veining. Still not sure I am a fan of spirals, maybe it just takes more practice. Cut on my Pegas using #2 pegas spiral and #3 mgt for lettering on 1/8” bbp. The pattern is by Gordon Woodall who posted his cut over a year ago and was kind enough to share the pattern. I should add that I added the Wisconsin to Gordon’s design. I did stack cut this and ended with two copies although the fuzzies were really bad on the top copy. Just need to add a hanger and mount it on the barroom wall. Thanks to my friend @munzieb who gave me a long list of great recommendations on cutting and finishing portraits.

  48. Doesn't a spiral blade make a bigger kerf? It even has more teeth per inch. Wasn't the spiral blade made for making spiral bowls?

    Holy Baseball.

I did this one for my Kid Brother, I am use to painting all that much but I had to give it a try, He will add the Ball Players Prayer when I take it him in August. He was well pleased with it. I had trouble with the fingers, all ways do, But overall I am pleased with how it turned out. I know this has nothing to do with Scrolling, just thought I would share.
