  1. Just got word that my new saw, a King 16", to go with me RVing. Should be here Wednesday. My first new saw since I bought my P-20 back about 1997 near as I can remember. I do plan to get the Peges clamps for the blade holder. I'll have a couple of weeks to "tune" it up before we head out for a week on the road. Chris

    plate stand.

I showed the Tiger to my friend, who is running the raffle for which it was made and he said. "Does it have a stand?" Oh, grief, give an inch take a mile !!! But to be honest I suppose it needed one as having a 'paper' backer it's quite a 'delicate' thing and would not do well with a 'hanger' So, I was looking on Ebay to see if I could find any 'cheap + cheerful' stands that I could put the Tiger on, when in walks Tony and says ''why don't you make one'' it can't be that difficult !! So off I went to search for a pattern,, I found this one on Steve Goods site and made it out of some scrap plywood. I don't think it turned out too badly myself but must admit cutting long straight lines is not my forte.

  3. I have been away for 2 months and then finally got home the 2nd of this month and a couple of days later my wife fell and hurt her arm and ribs and I have become the domestic player in the house since. My wife is starting to do much better but still has a way to go. Anyway. I was able to grab some shop time and made this Steve Good pattern for my wife. I needed to do something that was quick and easy but had a lot of interest in it so I showed this one to my wife and she liked it a lot, so here is my finished piece. She choose the colors for the background.

A phone text commission- 6 horse stall signs for a repeat customer. "Make them anyway (you) I want to!" So far 2 done; will not be very profitable; but, very good feelings about it! The rope and the pegs on Ruby are new material, all of the rest is rescued. some pallet, some woods drops, & some fence scrap. Cedar, pine and a lot of unknown to me. These are the kind of projects that are the most fun.

    3 New ones done.

Haven't posted in a while. Was busy cutting ornaments, and I need to take new pics of them... But here are two new cuts. The Laundry room is 3/8" Ash about 8x10 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart is 1/4" Quilted Maple. It's about 8x8 and cut with Olson #2/0R blades. The heart finish was not dry when I took the pic. The ornaments are about 2x3 inches and 1/4" thick Ash. All of them are Sheila Landry Designs.

  9. Back in late winter, I said I was going to make a sign for my son's wedding. Knew nothing about making signs, but knew I could cut and paint. My wife thought I was jumping the gun when I started cutting in early spring, but I got this in the store bought frame about a week before my bypass surgery. Less than a month to go before the wedding and I have nothing left to cut for the big day. 16 x 20 oak veneer MDF, poplar of various thicknesses and some 1/8" plywood.

  10. Hi all, I ran across an interesting competition for Art pieces. I am not really an artist. I'm more of an electronic engineer that likes hands on. And during locked down I can get more hands on. My first job out of college was Rockwell Space Shuttle division in Downey California. My sister was born in 1969, my Mom and Dad decided to name my sister Rhea Dawn. Dad says Rhea was a greek goddess for Earth,, and Dawn was rising. So my sisters name is Earth Rise because of the picture from the moon showing earth rising. So I kinda am interested in space stuff. So the art contest is about Earth. It is promoted by an Astronaut Nicole Stott. She is the first to try water color painting in space. I was watching a interesting National Geographic Series called "One Strange Rock" narrated by Will Smith. This is many episodes. It talks with Astronauts and then dives into some really cool details back on earth. Episode 1 shows how parts of oceans change colors within 90 minutes. Astronauts go around earth every 90 minutes. They noticed that colors changed. Nicole Stott was in series. There is more astronauts also. This shows discusses something called overview effect. Here is a short video from her. . . Here is a link to the competition. https://earthobservations.org/artcompetition.php You should browse around about the earth observation main page to see and feel what they do. This gives a better feel for the Art contest. One section is of course about sustainable wood source. about 2/3 way down on this page is an online form. I clicked this and it has an area for 500 words max about your art piece. Scrollsaw projects as art. This contest is a cool way to show off this site. Sea Turtles, Jelly Fish, Nature scenes, Water Wheels, these are some of the stuff I've seen done by members. FrankEV your stuff has lots of nature scenes plus they have some really cool colors. Intarsia guys also have some cool pieces. Natural coloring from mother nature. The hotshot coin guy, Nicole Stott wears a pendant, jewelry is art. This is a global contest. Last note: I know this topic can be pretty controversial about global warming. It is not my intent to bring up opinions and debates with this post.

  11. Every so often a friend sends me patterns that he likes and wants me to try. I believe it is an H. Botas pattern as there was a small amount of name visible in the corner of the pattern. This was one that I've been holding for a bit now as some of the lines were so thin I wasn't sure enough of my skill to cut it. But I finally did and I think it turned out fantastic! 1/2 inch birch ply cut with an Olson #5 reverse tooth. 18 inches wide.

I used that pattern to make a stand for my wife's Kindle ereader. She can take it apart to fit in her purse and has it handy when she is out of the house. She takes her Kindle everywhere. Tom

  13. We went (my lovely wife and I) to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Pretty cool - and - we made the mistake a few times of calling him Van GO .. I guess that's just what us ENGLISH speaking dips do. We were actually RUDELY corrected more than once .. hahahahaha .. "You Americans! It's pronounced VAN GOFF, NOT Van GOLF or VAN GO, it's VAN GOFF" I just smiled and said .. I'm just an ignorant Californian wanting to see some VAN GO stuff, can you tell me where to find the VAN GO Museum?" hahahahahahaha

    Back Again, Again?!

Well I am back once again. For those who remember me, Howdy once again, and I am glad I am back with the hopes to be actually active. For those who don't know me, Howdy to you and nice to meet ya. So to bring you up to speed on my first absence: Went through a divorce and a job change. I met a great gal and we both started driving a big rig together. We got married last year and bought a house with 15 Acres in North East Texas. We both have quit driving so we can spend time at home and develop our property into a homestead. So if you want to swing by and meet us, just let us know, there is plenty of room for a camper, tent, and we even have a spare room. (You will have to PM me to see about meeting us.) There is an excellent Bass Fishing lake just minutes from the house and a couple of camp grounds you can use as well. I have managed to get my stuff out of storage and I am also in the process of getting things set back up to start up my woodworking again, and I am planning on getting back into making patterns. I just need to get back into it slowly. While I probably wont be as active as I was the first time here (I was a former mod) I do plan on being active. Good to see you all, and have a great day. 15. Hello - I stumbled across the forum tonight and joined. I have been scrollsawing off and on since the late 80's. I started with a small Craftsman saw and then jumped to the Excalibur 24 inch saw of Sommerville Design in the early part of the 90's. I still have the EX. I have sawn nothing fancy; just puzzles and simple crafts for children/giveaways. Some lettering and signs. Pretty basic items. I hope to try more intricate work in the future and increase my skills.

  16. Finally got down to cutting Steve Good's compass pattern. Not a difficult pattern to cut, unless you hate angles. 1/4 bbply, #2/0 Pegas MG blades. Didn't stack-cut this, as I had to wait for my next trip to Lowes for wood for two of the layers. Ended up using 1/2" ply for the blank backer, I was worried about hangar nails/screw breaking into a cut part, but its thick enough where a hangar would naturally fall that I shouldn't have worried. Dark layers are Minwax "Honey" and the light is a new one for me, "Early American".

  18. Congrats on the new saw.. You'll like the saw I'm sure.. I agree with Don.. The Pegas chucks are nice, but I'm not sure I'd throw away the original set just to replace with the pegas.. use it as is and then a year or so down the road when you start having issues with blade chucks replace with the Pegas..

    Spray adhesive 3m 45

A lot of people use the full sheet labels, but I usually get a repositionable, spray craft glue as it's cheap and cheerful and works well for me even on my most intricate pieces.

  21. I use full sheet labels. Print right on the label, peel the back and stick right on the wood. These are extra sticky, so I use blue painters tape first.

    Giraffe.

I've always 'cut' as a hobby. Something to keep me entertained through my retirement. I've usually cut whatever took my fancy. I enjoy seeing 'something' appear out of what is essentially a plain piece of wood, it gives me lots of pleasure. However, I was asked to do this for a friends wife, but, not only that, I was told on Saturday evening that it's her birthday on Wednesday so would it be ready by then ??? I've cut a 'simpler' version of what was required. I must admit though that 'rushing' to get it cut/glued/oiled/varnished. was not enjoyable. This picture is what I've done today, and the pieces are just resting on top of one another. I now have a tremendous respect for those that do this for a living. Cutting to order and working to deadlines is not for me. I take my hat off to all those 'workers' out there. !!

    Giraffe.

I feel a lot like you do. I do not do sales but sell a little of my finished pieces on line, every now and then. I tried a craft show when I first started scrolling, only because my daughter wanted me to, but quickly found out that cutting a series of items just to make some extra money, took the fun out of what I was doing and made 'work' out of my pleasures. I would much rather take a request and cut it rather than make things that may or may not sell. I did ok on the money end but never was happy about the time I had spent on several of the same pieces that I brought back as left overs. That is a beautifully done giraffe piece you did. I have a granddaughter that likes giraffes a lot and I have made her several different ones. She always loves them and has a giraffe wall of my work. Dick heppnerguy

  24. Over the 4th of July weekend my wife made me an apple pie, I made a rack of ribs on the Traeger, and I cut a baseball piece! This Hank Aaron piece is an Al Baggetta pattern done in Red Oak with Lacquer finish. Several Pegas #1 & #3 blades gave their lives for this.

We really should be far more advanced than we are now in that area, but to me, not given the priority it should have been given.. I will go back and read absorb more of this... Thanks for sharing..

This was another stencil pattern I found on-line and converted to a scroll saw pattern. It was actually completed about the same time I finished King and Queen that I posted a few weeks ago but it took me awhile to get around to making the frame. The cut panel is maple affixed to a Mahogany Backer. The cutting was not very difficult although the whiskers are not very well done. A little bit the pattern’s fault and a lot my cutting fault. Cutting was done using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. The cut panel and backer was hand paint using Artist Acrylic paints. Frame is typical 1 ¾” wide Poplar, stained with Minwax Early American and finishe with multiple coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. Comments and critique is always welcome.

  41. No there's no 'backer'. I'll try and explain. Behind the cat is some black card. The cat is glued to the card. Then there's the 'oval' cut out of b/b and stained dark brown and glued to the cat. Here's a smaller piece made the same way but not yet put together that may help 'show' what I've done.

  42. Since joining a few days ago, I have been filling my spare time prowling and reading what folks here are doing. I am having a good time seeing your projects. I also like to see what saws folks use and read their tips. I decided to post a picture of my saw; it is rather old but still chugs along and problem free.
