  5. I am in the middle of a new project I am making for my son for Christmas. I have the white pieces cut and looking for wood for the black ones. I choose to put this photo up to show you how I made the decision to go ahead and try to make this chess set. You can see that one of the Knights is smaller then the other one. I cut it first to see if I could do it with all the turns and in and outs on the different ones. I know that bigger is easier and found I could handle it OK and proceeded. The taller one is the size I am making for him. The pieces were designed by John A. Flaig and are obviously compound cuts. I am using a piece of wood I have had for several years and never got around to using it. Not sure of the tree it came from but I believe it was retrieved from a saw mill that cut the trees for paper making. I have found the project to be easier to cut then I anticipated. The smaller piece is just under 2 inches Dick heppnerguy

    Current Project

Okay I am pretty proud so far.... Not finished, need to take it back apart, for final sanding, and fitting, then apply a finish.. Finally re-assemble with glue. But I thought I'd show it now... gett'n old, you never know.. The cutting was pretty easy, the getting assembled took as much time as the cutting, well not quite ...But I it took some time. Just one I have wanted to do for some time... I purchased the plans a couple years ago from Pedro in Spain... (Finescrollsaw.com). It is called the Cremona Wall Clock. The clock is 31" tall, 12" wide.

    Scrap Used

Well I have been a little busy lately, After I made the 2000 Vette for my Cousin and Popeye. I thought I would use up a lot of scrap I have been piling up, and do some painting. Something I don't do to very often. I have never made these to sell. Gonna try it tomorrow at the Flea Market. I hope they go over we well. Keeping my fingers toes and eyes crossed, well maybe not my eyes I need to drive Wish me Luck, Everyone have a Great Weekend.

    Horse stall signs

A phone text commission- 6 horse stall signs for a repeat customer. "Make them anyway (you) I want to!" So far 2 done; will not be very profitable; but, very good feelings about it! The rope and the pegs on Ruby are new material, all of the rest is rescued. some pallet, some woods drops, & some fence scrap. Cedar, pine and a lot of unknown to me. These are the kind of projects that are the most fun.

To my knowledge they no longer sell saws from their website.. You have to call to order one, they run batches of them ( I think ).. I just talked to them a couple weeks ago about buying a new 20" saw and they said it might be a while before they run a batch of those.. as the 26" is the most popular one. Customer service has improved a great deal but still not perfect, LOL Parts from the website is now updated so if something is out of stock they don't have a add to shopping cart option if it's out of stock.. so you cannot buy parts and be charged while waiting several months for the part. That said... it's still several months if they are in fact out of stock.. BUT they seem to be "trying" to keep an inventory of parts now... where I don't think they used to do that. I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy another saw from them.. just know up front that it may take some time for parts and to receive a new saw. As for ordering stocked items from the website... I've ordered blades from them and some saw parts early spring and again just a couple weeks ago I purchased some thumb screws and blades.. in both cases my orders came in the mail within 3-4 days.. I suggest anyone buying / owning a Hawk saw to stock up on normal wear parts.. otherwise you could be waiting a month or more for parts that they don't have in stock.. I normally do this with my other brands of saws anyway so I'm not waiting on the mail to deliver my parts.. kinda smart for a small craft business to not have down time waiting on parts.. so my Excalibur and other saws have parts on hand that are normal wear items.. ie blade screws / chucks and tension cam and set screws etc..

  11. My wife's sister likes dragonflies so I cut this for her birthday. Wish I had Fiona's talent and could work without a pattern. This would have been a more enjoyable cut but apparently I didn't get enough adhesive on it and had to fight the pattern lifting. I added a bit of detail around the eyes to help them stand out a bit more. Red oak with Danish Oil and a stained glass backer.

  12. I have been away for 2 months and then finally got home the 2nd of this month and a couple of days later my wife fell and hurt her arm and ribs and I have become the domestic player in the house since. My wife is starting to do much better but still has a way to go. Anyway. I was able to grab some shop time and made this Steve Good pattern for my wife. I needed to do something that was quick and easy but had a lot of interest in it so I showed this one to my wife and she liked it a lot, so here is my finished piece. She choose the colors for the background.

Not getting into any comments here about RBI because last time I got my hand slapped here. Just wanted to let those know who may have an interest I got off the phone with Doug who I am guessing has taken over as a fireman(customer service) to put out some fires over there. Not sure if Raven Nondorf is still there or not . But got a load of excuses about my order and was asked if i still want it. As I told him he has me over the barrel nowhere else to get parts. So yes send it. So after 5 months almost to the day I should get my order. What this all means about parts or new saws orders I have no idea because he said there is still 3 guys in the shop and that is all. All I can say to those who are buying a new RBI saw or are buying a used one good luck and hope all works out well for you. Maybe some expediting will happen with a change in voice.

    RBI

Mark, let me start by saying, I very seldom buy anything brand new. It's because I'm old. Why do I need anything NEW? So, with that said, if you really want to buy an RBI Hawk, keep your eyes open for a good used one. Do your homework and learn what constitutes a good one and what is a bad one. There are a ton of things to know about Hawks. How they have changed over the years is amazing. I am in a very high population area and there are always a lot of Hawks for sale on Craigslist and Marketplace. I have my choice of what I want. The only Hawk I have purchased was a fairly new (2010) 226 Ultra with all the latestest stuff except for the aggression adjustment on the lower arm. My point is I only paid $250 for it and it was in amazingly clean condition having less than 20 hours on it. After bringing it home and putting it in my very small shop, I decided it was just too big. I really did like it for the short time I had it but it had to go. If I ever have a larger shop, I'll consider another one. I also am keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a 220. At some point I may end up with one. That 6 inches makes huge difference in how much floor space it takes up when you think of the splay of the 4 legs. Anyway, just thought I'd toss that out for you to think about. There are so many deals out there, why spend all that money for a new one if you don't have to?

@Mark SW, I think most complaints were related to service, not the saw itself... Do they have one in stock? I would not be skeptical if they had one ready to ship... This is just my opinion, I have not dealt with them, I'm just basing it on what I have read on here.

Not sure on the newer Rigid planers but the older ones are the same one as the Ryobi that I have.. I'd say they're pretty good planers.. I use mine a lot.. as in every board that comes through my shop has went through the planer.. Where I get my lumber 3/4" is actual 7/8" so many times I resaw and get a 5/8 and a 3/16 out of it, even if I need just a 3/4" I plane it down to that. @Wichman I often wondered about the Bauer from Harbor Freight they look pretty solid and the price of the knives is good... I've read reviews and they all have been pretty good on it..

I have the HF (Bauer) lunchbox planer. I got it from the returned section for $185. I have a local store about 3 miles from my house and they carry the replacement blades for $25.00 a set. So far it works very well, nice smooth cuts. I have it set up on my miter saw stand (I bought extra brackets for other tools). I can easily feed 8' boards through it by myself.

  20. I have a Ridgid planer. Can't remember the model number. Easy to change the three knives and they are not that expensive. I use mine quite a bit and have been extremely satisfied with it. I believe they still come with a lifetime service agreement.

  21. I have an HP 5500 wide format inkjet printer/plotter that's been in storage a couple of years. It will print 4' wide by the length of the roll (about 125') and then automatically flip the page over and print the other side, if you want it to. It's about 9' long and 3' deep and on a stand so it's about 4.5' high stand and all. Anybody want it? It's going to take some service and probably new ink cartridges to get it printing again, but I'm certain that we can make a great deal out of it. You will need to come here, 20 miles NE of Charlotte, NC to get it though. I am not shipping it to you. You probably couldn't afford the shipping for it anyway. Get it working and there will be no limit to how big your scroll saw projects can be. Want to own the biggest printer on your block? Charley

Question is your husband a hobby woodworker or business? How often would he use one? Approximately General what are you willing to pay? I for instance, use mine occasionally, only do hobby and I do not need the top end one... All the time I used my Delta, I never had the helix head, they are as much or more than the planer, and I was totally satisfied with the results I got with... Other are not..

  24. I've had the Dewalt 733 since 2000ish.. It now has some major scratch in the platten that I have no clue how it got there, and is leaving lines down my boards. and it's got a difficult time to get down to 1/4" thick where I do most of my planing. I thought about a 734, but I just ordered the 735x from Amazon. Comes with the tables and extra knives. Not cheap, but next year I want to put a shelix head on it, and I could not get one for the 733. I want to be able to plane down some of that figured and quilted maple. 735X is $615 right now on Amazon.

@BadBob You could buy a small sample of labels and see how it goes.. or just keep using paper and evaluate how much of the full paper you use and see if it would be worth buying the full sheet labels or not.. The thing is "Yes" you may waist a portion of a full sheet but don't forget that you also waist a regular sheet of paper too when doing a small item.. and you also taking an extra step in having to spray the paper and wait for it to get tacky to stick it etc.. to me the less mess and the ability to just go peel and stick it alone is worth something. The labels aren't as cheap as paper and the spray.. I just calculate it into my prices.. If I was just a weekend scroll sawer then I might have a different opinion on that.. For those occasional small projects or very large that don't fit on a full sheet.. I still keep the spray around and use it.. Just not very often.. maybe a can every year or so. FYI: I do still use the shelf liner or tape.. The labels stick pretty good to bare wood and hard to get it back off. I've not tried using mineral spirits to remove them though.. if you're one that does the spray direct to wood and then the mineral spirits.. I assume it probably would work for the labels too.. but I haven't done that to know for sure.. maybe someone else can elaborate on that.

I don't do production cutting, and never have. The last two large projects I have done are clocks. The 8.5 X 11 sticky back sheets would be useless to me. Most of the projects I do are larger. Some of the pieces are 13" wide and 17" long. And I only do one project at a time. I actually find it easier to use my Duck, sticky back shelf liner and attache the pattern to it with 45. Just my opinion.

@BadBob Not very often.. I do so much production cutting that I will go into inkscape and layout a full sheet if possible.. for instance if I've got one of those ornament patterns that has only one ornament in the center of the page.. I go into inscape and copy and paste them so there are as many of them on the sheet as possible.. I have a file cabinet that I store excess patterns that aren't needed to cut yet.. however for the most part I just cut a full sheet of them at a time since I typically stock 30 ish of each ornament style anyway. There are instances where some items are too large to make two onto a sheet but small enough that something else could be printed on them.. I end up being wasteful in that case but it's not many of the things I make that fit like that. Animal puzzles come to mind as some that are in that bracket.. but many of the car puzzles are able to layout two of them per sheet.. I feel like at the end of the day.. I'm not wasting too much of the labels considering most things I'm able to combine many to a sheet. Some things if they're close in size to be two on a sheet but just slightly too big, I'll resize them just enough to make it two on a sheet. Anyway.. you kinda get the idea of what I do.. It'd be hard for a non production cutting person to take advantage of these like I do without putting in a lot of effort to layout each time they need to cut.. for me.. I know I'm going to be selling / cutting more so it works quite well for me.
