My wife's sister likes dragonflies so I cut this for her birthday. Wish I had Fiona's talent and could work without a pattern. This would have been a more enjoyable cut but apparently I didn't get enough adhesive on it and had to fight the pattern lifting. I added a bit of detail around the eyes to help them stand out a bit more. Red oak with Danish Oil and a stained glass backer.16 points

I had looked at Pedro's finescrollsaw.com several times and wanted to try one of his patterns. Purchased one of his patterns called the Wiseman Coffer. (9 euro) It was great working with Pedro and he did give suggestion that I either use European "A3" paper or have it converted but retain the original size. My local UPS store made it happen with 2 sets of 17 x 12 prints. I decided to kick it up a notch by going with Bubinga wood $$$. It requires both 1/8" and 1/4" wood. I had some of the 1/8" but I needed 2 pieces of 8" wide and the 2 sq foot packs were only 5.5" wide. I contacted Richard at Richards Craft wood in Clemmons NC. www.richardscraftwood.com. He was able to mill up the pieces I needed and had them in a few days. Lots of cutting and lots of broken blades (Bubinga is hard !) It took about 3 weeks to finish. I used a Lacquer finish and it really brings out the color of the wood. I did used a temporary light wood backer on the inside to accent the fretwork for the picture but removed it afterwards.7 points

I am in the middle of a new project I am making for my son for Christmas. I have the white pieces cut and looking for wood for the black ones. I choose to put this photo up to show you how I made the decision to go ahead and try to make this chess set. You can see that one of the Knights is smaller then the other one. I cut it first to see if I could do it with all the turns and in and outs on the different ones. I know that bigger is easier and found I could handle it OK and proceeded. The taller one is the size I am making for him. The pieces were designed by John A. Flaig and are obviously compound cuts. I am using a piece of wood I have had for several years and never got around to using it. Not sure of the tree it came from but I believe it was retrieved from a saw mill that cut the trees for paper making. I have found the project to be easier to cut then I anticipated. The smaller piece is just under 2 inches Dick heppnerguy3 points -

Lambo Bull

My son's school has "houses" that compete against each other for points throughout the week. His house if the Odwaga Bulls. He asked if he drew a bull could I cut it out. I said sure, thinking he was going to come back with a Chicago bulls logo. Instead he drew up the Lamborghini bull. Well the boy has got style I'd say and a definite knack for reproducing what he sees. He's quite good at free handing pictures of characters. 1/2 in birch ply. #5 Olson reverse tooth. Base apple red with metallic gold on top3 points -
Just a reminder, please not to share patterns you didn't design yourself. If they're from a book, there are copyrights attached to those patterns. Instead, point them in the direction where they can obtain the patterns for themselves. This is also true for patterns from other websites and digital products. Even if they're free patterns, many times the artist wants to control how their hard work is distributed. We want to respect the designer's wishes and support the artists that make these wonderful patterns. There are times when the designer has passed away and the patterns are no longer available for purchase. It may seem like copyrights no longer pertain or we may want to extend their legacy by sharing their work. Unfortunately, copyrights still do persist 70 years beyond the designer's death. The rights are transferred to his/her estate. It is up to their estate as to what they want to do with the designs. Also, please remember that I'm just a solo guy who runs SSV on the side for the scrolling community. I try hard to make this a friendly place with a ton of great information and resources. We have a fostered a group of really great people who want to be helpful. Sometimes we don't think anything of sharing a pattern with a fellow scroller. But please keep this in mind. We can't use SSV as a platform to share patterns that don't belong to us. A single letter from a cranky lawyer could potentially shut down the whole website. So I try to be diligent about protecting copyrighted works. SSV is a big place and I can't see it all. If you see something that doesn't belong, please flag it for review (the 3 dots under the upper right corner). Clayton or I will take a closer look. Thank you for understanding.2 points

Suggestions Please.

Put a small tarp down on the ground, underneath the planer. Makes gathering the chips pretty easy. Then you just have to figure out what to do with them. Fortunately for me, I can dump them in the woods, next to my house.2 points -
I did that for a while but it really makes a mess.. even outside... you'll make a large pile of sawdust / chips in no time.. I got to where I put a wheelbarrow where the majority of the chips land and that saved raking / sweeping so much clean-up.. I suggest at a minimum to get a shop vac with a dust / chip separator.. You'll fill up a small trash can or even the wheelbarrow in just a short time..2 points

Congrats to getting a new Hawk!! The issue with buying a used Hawk is.. you don't see too many BM series.. especially in the 20" saw.. and I don't think they ever made a G4 in a 20" saw so you'd be stuck with a Ultra saw or older which lack many of the new and much more user friendly features that those older saws don't have and can't upgrade to. Those older saws are nice saws.. but the newest BM series outperforms those older saws by a long shot.. I wish they made a smaller saw like a 16".. I'd be ordering one today if they had such a thing.. Also glad you had a positive experience so far.. I hope they continue with that.. Some of their older issues was a couple employees not really doing their job.. Now that they are gone and some new help has been hired.. they've been better..2 points

That is one awesome piece. Love it. I read once that if you keep a pencil with an eraser on the end close to your machine and the pattern starts to lift just use the eraser end to hold the pattern down because you can hold it real close to the blade. Marg2 points

Okay I am pretty proud so far.... Not finished, need to take it back apart, for final sanding, and fitting, then apply a finish.. Finally re-assemble with glue. But I thought I'd show it now... gett'n old, you never know.. The cutting was pretty easy, the getting assembled took as much time as the cutting, well not quite ...But I it took some time. Just one I have wanted to do for some time... I purchased the plans a couple years ago from Pedro in Spain... (Finescrollsaw.com). It is called the Cremona Wall Clock. The clock is 31" tall, 12" wide.2 points

My King arrived today. I was surprised to see it was bolted to plywood inside the box. After unbolting and unpacking I gave it a few test runs, got the "feet" on it, clamped to my bench, not the best set up, I was rather surprised a the vibration, not near as smooth as my Delta. I am thinking at this point it was because I dont have it mounted to eliminate the vibration. At any rate I love the size of the table, larger than my Delta. I have a couple of weeks before I take it "on the road" in the RV. I plan to cut Mawbry"s Mill while RVing so I hope I can get the vibration under control. Chris2 points

Well I have been a little busy lately, After I made the 2000 Vette for my Cousin and Popeye. I thought I would use up a lot of scrap I have been piling up, and do some painting. Something I don't do to very often. I have never made these to sell. Gonna try it tomorrow at the Flea Market. I hope they go over we well. Keeping my fingers toes and eyes crossed, well maybe not my eyes I need to drive Wish me Luck, Everyone have a Great Weekend.1 point

Hello - I stumbled across the forum tonight and joined. I have been scrollsawing off and on since the late 80's. I started with a small Craftsman saw and then jumped to the Excalibur 24 inch saw of Sommerville Design in the early part of the 90's. I still have the EX. I have sawn nothing fancy; just puzzles and simple crafts for children/giveaways. Some lettering and signs. Pretty basic items. I hope to try more intricate work in the future and increase my skills.1 point

Hey Kevin, We were wondering where you were. Looks like you have been really busy. Pop in every once in a while if you can so we know you are ok.1 point -
We used to go mainly to one campground and camp seasonal every year / summers when the kids was little.. but we haven't been for probably 5 years now as just been too busy with getting kids moved into college and now out of college.. It's just been too busy to go, keep saying maybe next year... then things happen and we don't. Keep talking about selling the 30ft Prowler 5th wheel.. down sizing to a smaller 5th wheel with a slide out. Old Dodge is also starting to show its age too. At some point closer to retirement we've thought about buying a new truck and trailer.. I'm just not sure it's something I want to do.. I don't see us going full time.. also talked about buying a second home in the south and being snowbirds for part of the year. I'm kinda setting myself up for that.. since I have 4 scroll saws and dang near two of everything.. enough to make another shop at my second home, lol. Got several years yet to decide so who knows.. camping might be illegal by then.. unless they get some electric trucks and some clean burning campfires, LOL Had a motorhome before we had kids and outgrew it as it was just a small 20ft outfit.. we liked that for certain things and we like the 5th wheel for certain things.1 point

Thank everyone for the response. Ray your post is very insightful as I too am old, half a century two lustrums( Rooster Cogburn fan) and four years. On things where I can afford them I prefer new. With that I went and ordered the BM-20 and a few parts that see wear and tear such as the wedge pivot and nylon washer. I added the Performance package which includes Accessory Table, Mag Light, Foot Switch, and (2) Lower blade holders. The customer service was excellent. I sent an email Wednesday morning and had a response within a couple hours. Did the same thing in the afternoon had a response Thursday am. Called Thursday afternoon got right thru to Hope a very knowledgeable lady. She had no trouble with my questions or finding part numbers. Half and hour latter my Hawk is ordered. Delivery should be 4 weeks according to BN. I know that the way things are now (completely 7 letters) that it takes time. Overall I am pleased with my Bushton Manufacturing experience. Thank you Mark1 point

New saw enroute *Update, Arrived**
OzarkSawdust reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I know some folks say there is less vibration with the Pegas chuck heads.. I never noticed that myself.. maybe it does on some saws that are not perfectly tuned? I'm not sure.. They are a little more user friendly.. BUT.. Not so much so as to go rush out to spend another $100.. Now, if you have the cash and want a spare back-up set.. buy them but keep the old parts as a back-up plan for when you need to order parts for the Pegas heads.. Yes they have parts that wear out besides the screws..1 point -

Sounds like you have received some good feedback. For what it is worth, I have had a Delta 12” planner since early 1990’s. I have built a lot of furniture using this planner and using rough lumber. Only issues has been a defect in the blade from a piece of metal in a board. It has been a good and solid woodworking tool. My one advise on any brand would be to not remove too much wood with each pass. My only regret is that I wish it was was wider, but cost prevented that. I hope this was helpful as well. Good luck.1 point
