    Christmas pine

Hello friends, a little detail for Christmas, I hope you like it. Thank you in advance for your comments.

  2. Someone I know saw the pattern laid out, and claimed it for herself before it was even cut.. but it's 3/16" thick black walnut with a backer. Measures about 10x17. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades. Sheila Landry Design.. (do I even need to mention that anymore? LOL). Backer is painted with 3 different colors. The skull is painted not the board it's on.

    Personal Choice

Well I have made a Personal Choice, after a Long Personal battle with myself I have decided to stop cutting scrolled plaques, the ones like I've been doing. All the Cowboys and Country Singer's. and Cars. Instead I will be making Single Layered Plaques maybe double. much easier on me and my Back, which I have been having a lot of problems with lately. After 20 plus yrs it was a hard choice. but one I had to make. Not giving up Scrolling, just changing Lanes, heading down a new road.

You're in a great area to be able to do that.. Most my woodworking stuff was used OR refurbished.. I wanted a BM series Hawk for a long time.. waited 3 years for a used one to show up.. didn't happen and I was in a position to need to make some money disappear or pay higher taxes so I bought new.. The CNC, BM series Hawk, and Grizzly Bandsaw are the only new things I've bought.. Rest was used and refurb. Looking on craigslist and FB for your area though.. I could have bought more than the entire shop + if I lived in your area.. But I'll keep my cost of living in my area and the country any day over a city type living. You can have all the good deals, I'll suffer having to buy what I want new if needed, LOL Come think of it.. the two other Hawks, EX-21, drill press, chop saw, jointer, and planer all add up to about the same price I paid for the one Hawk, LOL

Kevin, I love high end tools but I hate high end prices. So I have high end scroll saws at a fraction of the retail cost.

  9. I decided this year that I would give Gifts of my cuttings for Christmas to some local friends and to also send them to members of my remotely located family. Because I made this decision early, I also decided to interrupt my regular work and spend some dedicated time doing Portraits of Santa. I’ve spent more than the last two full weeks cutting and finishing this grouping of portraits. I obtained great patterns from Botas and Fox along with a few stencil patterns I found which I converted to work as Scroll Saw patterns. I had previously cut the Santa Portrait by Fox last year which had been given away once already. All cuttings were done in 5/32” thick Solid Core Maple or Birch panels using mainly Pegas #2/0 and #0 blades. All cut panels were affixed to 1/4” thick BB ply backers that were stained with Minwax Barn Red and as always protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. The Frames are simple 1 3/4” wide Poplar and finished with Krylon Hunter Green all-in-one primer and paint. Santa 1 is an 11” x 14” Botas Pattern Santa 2 is an 11” x 14” Botas Pattern Santa 3 is a 12” x 15” conversion Santa 4 is a 11” x 14” Blume Pattern Santa 5 (Father Christmas) is an 11” x 14” conversion Santa 6 (Merry Christmas) is an 11” x 11” conversion Santa 7 Is an 11” x 14” Fox Pattern I plan to gift these pieces to all by Thanksgiving, so they only need to be hung for display for about a month and then put away with their other Christmas decorations, maybe to be displayed again each Christmas thereafter. Hope you enjoy. Comments and critiques is always welcome. PS: If you are wondering where Santa 4 is...it is J. Blume's recent offering which I msay still add to the group, but these had been started beforehand. Santa 4 Added. Watch New Pattern Announcements. I'll post up PDFs of the converted patterns shortly. Posted.

    Pegas Saw Deal

Pegas recently raised the prices and most of the places that offer them is now $940 ish .. I was just looking at some CNC stuff on woodcraft website and thought I'd look at the scroll saws they offer.. Didn't know they sold Pegas saws.. They have not raised the price yet.. $820.. It says they are out of stock but should ship in mid Oct. I put it in my shopping cart to see if they'd change the price or even let me buy since they're back ordered.. I was surprised to see that for me.. shipping is only like $38 + a $10 freight charge Edit to add the link. https://www.woodcraft.com/products/pegas-21-scroll-saw-machine-pegas

    Two Heads

A while ago on September 21st, Francisco aka frankorona (a kindred spirit as I am actually a Francis but I use Frank) posted his “Modernist Figures” in Bragging Rights. I thought they were just outstandingly beautiful and asked him if he had made a pattern that he was willing to share. He replied that he had not made a pattern, but instead, sent me a copy the images he used. I was able to use the images to make a pattern for the “Two Heads” sculpture. I’ll probably do the other piece in the future. Therefore, from this Francis to my friend Francisco in Mexico, I say Muchas Gracias. This work was not the type of work I usually do, but a change of pace is sometimes a good thing. So, here is my attempt at making this beautiful sculpture. I used solid 3/4” Maple for the busts and a piece of 3/4” thick solid Walnut in an oval shape for the base. The busts are about 16 inches tall, and the oval base is 9” long x 6” wide. Cutting was relatively easy and done with just one Pegas #5 Skip blade. I then used a combination of my rotary carving tools and a lot of sandpaper to ease and smooth all the edges. The wood was left natural color. There is lots of grain coloration in this piece of Maple After initial carving and sanding I applied a coat of lacquer sanding sealer prior to some final sanding before finishing. Finishing was multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer with some very light sanding between coats for nice ‘smooth-to-the-touch’ finish. Side 1 Site 2 Hope you enjoy. Comments and critique always welcome.

  14. Thank for the nice words of encouragement on my project. She did like it a lot and immediately hung in on our bedroom wall. Sharon is continuing to do better but sometimes pushes things and has a set back from it. Sh has a doctor appointment the first of next week so we will see what he says about things. Dick

    Personal Choice

I have found something new to Scroll, I will be posting them soon, They don't take long to cut. I paint them, so I am moving from my saw to my other table. It was the lifting of the plastic tubs going to flea market's that was hurting my back, with all the heavy plaques, I went from 3/4in to 1/4 a few yrs ago. but I layered the 3/4 so it didn't help to much. Now I will just cut single layers maybe double. A lot lighter. Thank you all for your concern and suggestions. I Love this place.

  17. Halloween my favorite time of the year next to Christmas. This is my chute from last year. I am working on revisions as last year was a done quickly due to covid. We have a lot of families in the neighborhood so we expect a 150 or more.. I hope movie plays. Movie doesn't play so I uploaded to YouTube. https://youtu.be/YYwsc0VFnk4 MVI_8189.MOV

  19. Every year, between first part of Aug through Oct, I'm crazy busy at work and hardly able to get into the shop. But I was able to knock these out, which was a lot of fun. Wooden Jack-o’-lanterns made out of some cedar fence boards. Playing around with different finishes. The darker one is burnt with a torch before staining it, which adds a nice effect.

    Welcome with a twist

Like it very much. Well cut. It may be the angle the photo was taken but the wording is very hard to read/see. The Black Walnut is a beautiful piece of wood but the extreamly dark grain seems to overpower the cutting. Again it may be just how shows in the photo.

I just got my DW735, and not a big fan of it. I'm getting a LOT of snipe with it. I leveled the wings using a straight edge at each side.. only to find that the middle of both tables is about 1/16" below the plate of the planer. so if I set the edges to be level, then I have a bump feeding in, and no support feeding out unless the wood has hit the back edge of the outfeed table.. kinda worthless when doing stuff shorter than say 16".. I'm going to be calling Dewalt today to see if they will replace the wings, since they are brand new, less than a week old.

  31. I have been away for 2 months and then finally got home the 2nd of this month and a couple of days later my wife fell and hurt her arm and ribs and I have become the domestic player in the house since. My wife is starting to do much better but still has a way to go. Anyway. I was able to grab some shop time and made this Steve Good pattern for my wife. I needed to do something that was quick and easy but had a lot of interest in it so I showed this one to my wife and she liked it a lot, so here is my finished piece. She choose the colors for the background.

    Personal Choice

I can definitely understand a change if what you are doing is painful. Just stay on the saw even if you have to get up and move around occasionally. To me, scrolling is very relaxing but I do fell tension in my shoulders after sitting behind the saw for a considerable amount of time. At that point I'll usually get up and move around or work on something that requires a different position for a while.

  47. The 734 is single speed. It has a 3 blade cutter head, but is only single speed. Still gives a nice smooth surface. I replaced a Delta with the 734 about 5 years ago. The Delta had been a great planer for me for a long time, but I had the opportunity to upgrade, so I got the 734.

I have the Dewalt 735. since 2009 (I think) absolutely love it You really need to have dust collection connected to any of them. The Dewalt has a very powerful built in blower so it just needs a hose connected to it that goes into some form of containment. Mine is connected to my central DC system. I had the hose pop off in the middle of a cut once OMG what a mess!

  49. Dick, this is a beautiful piece, but it would not be quick and easy or relaxing for me as you have said it was for you. That is a nod to your excellent skills in front of the saw. I’m sorry to hear Sharon took a tumble. I’m happy to hear while it was bad enough, it was not as bad as it could have been. Glad to hear she is on the mend and you are playing your role of doting husband admirably. I hope she enjoys seeing her beautiful piece you have crafted special for her. Prayers said that she continues to heal well and quickly before that company comes.
