I just finished this Mike Williams pattern. I like to cut portraits pretty small and I cut this one 9x6 inches. It made for some pretty intense scrolling, all done with Pegas 2/0 spiral blades on my Pegas saw. I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t posted on here in a while, though I scroll almost everyday. I was deeply saddened to see the news about the passing of Les. This community lost a very encouraging contributor.10 points

I've rediscovered The Marx Brothers recently and then found the pattern under People. Its 4mm BBP and the backing will be the same. To be stained and framed. I didn't even attempt the polka dots or stripes on Chico or Harpo with the scroll saw. I'm thinking of adding them in with different Dremmel bits. I will post again when they're done.10 points -

My biggest event is coming up this weekend and the weather looks perfect, so I'm expecting big things. Preparing for it has been rather frantic as my last 2 major events have wiped out my inventory. This'll be the first year at this event I'll have the wall hooks so I'm trying to take as many as possible. The event is located on Topsail Island so I have 3 custom versions. The puzzle versions of them do very well there and expecting the hooks to be in high demand.7 points

My Washington Raindeer
GusGustin and 5 others reacted to Greatgrandpawrichard for a topic
30 Years ago I found a Reindeer Pattern that was big enough to be cut out on a Bandsaw. I tried it and my wife absolutely loved it, but she wanted the deer to be smaller so that she could use them as Christmas decorations. So, I used my scanner and I kept reducing the size down to about 3 inches tall by ¾ ths. Of an inch thick. Thus began a love affair with those little critters that has spanned 3 Decades! I have made them and shipped them all over the world. I have them in all 50 states of the USA, Every Province of Canada, England, Sweden, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, Australia, New Zeland, Hong Kong, and Japan. They are a Tradition for me that I enjoy and I make them all year long, I have made them out of Rosewood, Purple Heart, Teak, Ironwood, Walnut, Maple, White Ash, Pine, Fir, Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Aromatic Cedar, White Cedar, Red Oak, White Oak, then I laminated different woods together for unique looking deer and several other woods that I have accumulated through the years. I have named them Washington Raindeer ( in honor of the State of Washington and what it seems forever to do here on the west coast of Washington.). The first few years I struggled with cutting them out but I finally managed to get a consistent way to cut them out that fits my style. Not to mention that I upgraded my scroll saw from a $199, 16 inch Craftsman Scroll saw to a 20 inch RBI Scroll Saw that I finally wore out last year. So I replaced it with another RBI 26 inch saw. In the last year, with my new saw I have challenged myself with making the Raindeer smaller and smaller. My latest size is a tiny 7/8 inch tall baby deer. I now have 5 different pattern sizes that I use consistently. Dick6 points -

Halloween Scroll Saw Challenge
Tomanydogs and 4 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Haven't cut anything Halloween-ish this year, since we usually don't decorate or dress up for it (daughter does, but wife was never into that, so of course I'm not either, she tells me). Cut these a while back and hang them up at work. The splatterskull was bought by a lady at work, I haven't had a chance to cut another one. Top row, L-R: OogieBoogie (from "Nightmare Before Christmas") Ash (from "Evil Dead" series) Creepy grin (found on Google) Bottom row, L-R: Alfred Hitchcock (early horror filmmaker) Edgar Allan Poe (NOT Hitler....yeah, I work with some geniuses) H.P. Lovecraft (early horror author, inspiration for Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Wes Craven, etc)5 points -
Planet Of The Apes
frankorona and 3 others reacted to Charlie E for a topic
So I've been a fan of Planet Of The Apes movies since I was a child. In 2014 my son, Chris, told me they were making a new series which preceded the original story line. There are 3 movies in the new series and I love all 3 as does my son. This is Caesar from the new movies and his son Cornelius who is the main ape character in the ones I grew up watching. I hid mine and my son's initials in the portrait. (both CKE) One is in Caesar and one in Cornelius. The shape in the lower right is a symbol from the movie. I'm keeping this one for now but it will eventually be my son's. About 9" X 11" in 1/2" red oak.4 points -
I've been seeing a lot of people posting pix of projects with lights so I decided to try one myself. I designed this light box today, making it so you can change out the front panel for different holidays. This one is obviously for Halloween. The panel was cut out using a Pegas #3R Reverse Skip Blade. The sides, top and bottom are all cut out of 1/2" red oak plywood. The front and back panel are 1/4" red oak plywood. The bottom back panel and sides are glued together. The top can be removed and the front panel will slide out. I will post the pattern and how to make the box later. I was unable to finish the box today due to weather as it was too humid to spray it. 20211011_171511.mp43 points

I bought many books. But....the best thing you can do is first, hang out here and ask questions. Second download some practice patterns and practice, practice and practice some more. A large part of scrolling is developing "muscle memory". That just takes time. And practice.3 points

Every year, between first part of Aug through Oct, I'm crazy busy at work and hardly able to get into the shop. But I was able to knock these out, which was a lot of fun. Wooden Jack-o’-lanterns made out of some cedar fence boards. Playing around with different finishes. The darker one is burnt with a torch before staining it, which adds a nice effect.3 points -
For anyone looking for it on his blog, this is a direct link to when he posted it back in Oct. 2017. https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2017/10/halloween-scroll-saw-pattern.html For those who love Halloween decorations, Steve hAs a LOT of Halloween projects from over the years. Halloween my favorite time of the year next to Christmas. This is my chute from last year. I am working on revisions as last year was a done quickly due to covid. We have a lot of families in the neighborhood so we expect a 150 or more.. I hope movie plays. Movie doesn't play so I uploaded to YouTube. https://youtu.be/YYwsc0VFnk4 MVI_8189.MOV2 points -

Thank you very much Paul! I did cut the suggestion of the red stripe and really struggled with whether to stain it red, as well as staining their eyes green, a sign of their intelligence in the movie. I decided against it, at least for now. I worked on it for so long I'm terrified of ruining it. I see how I want it in my mind but I'm afraid it won't turn out that way.1 point

Beautiful! I plan to cut that one some day. And you're right. Fiona is a gifted artist who happens to use a scroll saw. Some of the multilayered pieces she does with vegetation in the front are just unbelievable. She must also be gifted with the patience of Job.1 point

Long ago I began using the 5.5" pill bottles from my local drug store. The Pharmacist at the Walmart near me will give them to me in 10 at a time quantity for free. When I need more, I get them, but I wait a few weeks between so I don't affect their supply noticeably. They don't use this size often anyway. The tops are combination locking and no lock depending on whether the cap is installed right side up or upside down. This is very convenient. I keep them in the upright locking orientation, except for the one that I am using and I invert the cap on that one, mostly to be able to find it easily. I built a large hinged box that holds many of these bottles and each bottle will hold about 5 gross easily, or with 3 gross or less in it, there is room for one of my fat fingers to reach in and extract just one blade from the bundle that I have opened. I use round paper sticky labels on the tops and write the blade contents on it. I also drop the label that comes with the blades into the bottle, so if the cap doesn't get put on and gets mixed with another, that I can figure out the error and get the proper cap back on the correct bottle. I never re-use a previously used blade. They go into a waste recycle bottle when I remove them from the saw. At about $0.25 a blade, they just aren't worth trying to keep them and somehow keep from mixing them, since I switch blade sizes and styles quite often. Even if I remove a blade after just 10 minutes of cutting, it goes into the recycle bottle. The enjoyment of my scroll saw hobby depends on the quality of my cuts. Only new blades will ever be used on my saw, and if I don't like how a blade is cutting it might reach the recycle bottle in less than 1" of cutting. . I have been known to throw away a whole bundle if I find several bad blades in it. The only exception to this is the spiral blade that I use frequently for cleaning out tight places in the patterns. I have a rare earth magnet glued to the upper arm of my saw that this spiral blade lives on when it's not in use. When it gets dull, it goes in the same recycle bottle with the other used blades. So I have a big box that I store most of my blades in, and then a smaller box that is divided in half. One side is for the hand tools and other things that I frequently use when cutting on my scroll saw. The other half of the box contains up to 9 pill bottles that I expect to use in my scrolling session. These get traded out from the larger box as my needs change. The smaller box is always next to my scroll saw when I'm cutting, and it went with me to any shows, training classes, or demonstrations when I was doing them. Now, it just sits on top of an inverted soda crate next to my scroll saw. Charley1 point

I've done a lot of different types of scrolled work: fretwork, portraits, intarsia, segmentation, compound cuts, etc. I learn from each of these. I have bought books mainly for the patterns. Some have great tutorials, others...not so much. Ask questions and try many different types of work.1 point -
