    Planet Of The Apes

So I've been a fan of Planet Of The Apes movies since I was a child. In 2014 my son, Chris, told me they were making a new series which preceded the original story line. There are 3 movies in the new series and I love all 3 as does my son. This is Caesar from the new movies and his son Cornelius who is the main ape character in the ones I grew up watching. I hid mine and my son's initials in the portrait. (both CKE) One is in Caesar and one in Cornelius. The shape in the lower right is a symbol from the movie. I'm keeping this one for now but it will eventually be my son's. About 9" X 11" in 1/2" red oak.

Finished this one yesterday. Measures 7"x16" and is made from 1/4" hard maple, with a ply backer. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades. Sheila Landry Design.

  4. Don modified the pattern form square to round in order for me to be able to use this live edge birch cutout. After cutting the leaves out Don suggested that maybe using Epoxy will enhance the trivet. Here is the result, I might use a clear coat to finish it up.

    Face in the sun.

Only 89 cuts but took me about 7 hours. Either I am slowing down or need to find a better designer.

    Tough Day

I just finished this Mike Williams pattern. I like to cut portraits pretty small and I cut this one 9x6 inches. It made for some pretty intense scrolling, all done with Pegas 2/0 spiral blades on my Pegas saw. I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t posted on here in a while, though I scroll almost everyday. I was deeply saddened to see the news about the passing of Les. This community lost a very encouraging contributor.

  8. My biggest event is coming up this weekend and the weather looks perfect, so I'm expecting big things. Preparing for it has been rather frantic as my last 2 major events have wiped out my inventory. This'll be the first year at this event I'll have the wall hooks so I'm trying to take as many as possible. The event is located on Topsail Island so I have 3 custom versions. The puzzle versions of them do very well there and expecting the hooks to be in high demand.

  10. 30 Years ago I found a Reindeer Pattern that was big enough to be cut out on a Bandsaw. I tried it and my wife absolutely loved it, but she wanted the deer to be smaller so that she could use them as Christmas decorations. So, I used my scanner and I kept reducing the size down to about 3 inches tall by ¾ ths. Of an inch thick. Thus began a love affair with those little critters that has spanned 3 Decades! I have made them and shipped them all over the world. I have them in all 50 states of the USA, Every Province of Canada, England, Sweden, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, Australia, New Zeland, Hong Kong, and Japan. They are a Tradition for me that I enjoy and I make them all year long, I have made them out of Rosewood, Purple Heart, Teak, Ironwood, Walnut, Maple, White Ash, Pine, Fir, Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Aromatic Cedar, White Cedar, Red Oak, White Oak, then I laminated different woods together for unique looking deer and several other woods that I have accumulated through the years. I have named them Washington Raindeer ( in honor of the State of Washington and what it seems forever to do here on the west coast of Washington.). The first few years I struggled with cutting them out but I finally managed to get a consistent way to cut them out that fits my style. Not to mention that I upgraded my scroll saw from a $199, 16 inch Craftsman Scroll saw to a 20 inch RBI Scroll Saw that I finally wore out last year. So I replaced it with another RBI 26 inch saw. In the last year, with my new saw I have challenged myself with making the Raindeer smaller and smaller. My latest size is a tiny 7/8 inch tall baby deer. I now have 5 different pattern sizes that I use consistently. Dick

  11. I recently posted something like that but everybody said they just learned to cut straight with practice. A fence or miter gauge type thing really isn't a necessity on a scroll saw.

    MDF - Wood? or Both??

It's MDF core and if I remember correctly it comes in oak, maple and hickory for matching the more common cabinets. I've used it in the past, didn't know lowes and the like carried it though.. I've always bought it at my local lumber yard.. Some of the less common materials is actually laminated with like wall paper type material rather than actual wood material so watch out for that.. maybe it's just a cheaper version? Not sure but some of the stuff I've seen is real wood ( plywood ) and others is ply but just cheap stuff with a wall paper type laminate to resemble the wood type.

    MDF - Wood? or Both??

Hi Joe, I think this is the same material I have used a few times as backer boards. I have also cut some key chains. The material I have looks like plywood but doesn't have the nice grain like what you posted from Lowes. As far as pricing, I can get birch and maple 1/4 plywood 2' X 4' for about $15. It's been about a month since I last purchased any so that price may have gone up or down. I think it would work well for ornaments. It's light and by stack cutting you reduce the chance of breakout on thin cuts. Good luck!

    Thank you Dan.

I've rediscovered The Marx Brothers recently and then found the pattern under People. Its 4mm BBP and the backing will be the same. To be stained and framed. I didn't even attempt the polka dots or stripes on Chico or Harpo with the scroll saw. I'm thinking of adding them in with different Dremmel bits. I will post again when they're done.

Vaery well done. Captured the likeness perfectly. If I had that cutting hanging in my house, I know I would be asked if it was a self portrait.

  18. Haven't cut anything Halloween-ish this year, since we usually don't decorate or dress up for it (daughter does, but wife was never into that, so of course I'm not either, she tells me). Cut these a while back and hang them up at work. The splatterskull was bought by a lady at work, I haven't had a chance to cut another one. Top row, L-R: OogieBoogie (from "Nightmare Before Christmas") Ash (from "Evil Dead" series) Creepy grin (found on Google) Bottom row, L-R: Alfred Hitchcock (early horror filmmaker) Edgar Allan Poe (NOT Hitler....yeah, I work with some geniuses) H.P. Lovecraft (early horror author, inspiration for Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Wes Craven, etc)

  19. Two days late as her birthday was Tuesday. That's me,!!! I made it on a beautiful teak venier but failed to conciser the fragileness of it. So a little backer behind it helped after it was all done. I aim to put a smile on a girl's face just for their time. I also for got to take a finished picture of it , poor me.theres a clock init too but that's in the missing picture. Not bad for not having my office word program to work from.

  21. After I made the last Christmas stuff I posted a week or so ago, Sue Mey actually sent me a message and asked me to cut this and take pictures for her to put in her website. After the swelling in my head decreased, this is what I made. I am very humbled for her even ask me. The pattern is much better than my cutting for sure. The arches are made from Baltic birch and I put linseed oil on them. The base is a very old piece of plywood that's older than I am, with just some polyurethane on it.

Jim, don't find a new designer!!! I happen to have experience with some of his designs and know he is pretty darn good. Great project that turned out fantastic. Another on my "to do" list.

    Light Box

I've been seeing a lot of people posting pix of projects with lights so I decided to try one myself. I designed this light box today, making it so you can change out the front panel for different holidays. This one is obviously for Halloween. The panel was cut out using a Pegas #3R Reverse Skip Blade. The sides, top and bottom are all cut out of 1/2" red oak plywood. The front and back panel are 1/4" red oak plywood. The bottom back panel and sides are glued together. The top can be removed and the front panel will slide out. I will post the pattern and how to make the box later. I was unable to finish the box today due to weather as it was too humid to spray it. 20211011_171511.mp4

We have a lot of families in the neighborhood so we expect a 150 or more.. I hope movie plays. Movie doesn't play so I uploaded to YouTube. https://youtu.be/YYwsc0VFnk4 MVI_8189.MOV
