New Sue Mey pattern
frankorona and 3 others reacted to Jronn65 for a topic
Sue Mey recently advertised several patterns like this one. I like it. The base, being cedar, just seems to add to it. The top part is, I think birch, I put linseed oil on front and back, but back really didn't change much in color. Used 0 size spiral! Guess I could have darken the room more to show the lights better. Oh well.4 points -

Nova, from Planet of the Apes
frankorona and 2 others reacted to Charlie E for a topic
This is Nova, from Planet of the Apes. If you're not familiar, she was named for the chrome Nova logo like this one that she liked. In this picture she is riding horseback behind Caesar the head ape, carrying a handmade doll that ends up playing a huge part in the demise of the evil Woody Harrelson. 1/2" red oak, about 8" X 10".3 points -
Changing table for first granddaughter
Tomanydogs and one other reacted to cowboyup3371 for a topic
My daughter asked me to build a changing table on 1 August after the one she bought from Amazon broke as they started to assemble it. Of course I said yes but couldn't start it until mid-August and so spent anywhere from 4 to 10 hours a day in the shop. I wasn't able to finish it before my granddaughter arrived on 1 Oct but I finally delivered it last night. There are 28 mortise and tenon joints, 4 sets of hand cut dovetails, and 6 scroll work pieces adapted from Steve Goode's patterns (daughter asked me to use fairies in the design). There's also a LED light in the back with a dimmer so they doesn't have to use the overhead light at night. unicorn clock
Tomanydogs and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My grandson spent a couple of weeks visiting us from Oregon. He mentioned that he was wanting somethings for his girlfriend for Christmas and she was a big unicorn person. I had him look through some of my patterns and he came up with the unicorn clock, which it a Steve Good pattern. I printed out the pattern and quickly realized that the one size clock I had in my drawer was too large for the pattern as it was printed. I enlarged it so that the clock with fit. He watched me cut and finish the clock and was able to take it home with him the following day. It is made from a piece of 3/4 inch Poplar I had in my wood supply. He wanted it finished with lemon Oil so he could take it home with him in the morning. I was not particularly excited about the simplicity of the pattern but he was one excited guy when it was finished. He even called it 'perfect'. Who am I to argue with my customers? He said he did not wish to have the base as it was just exactly what he wanted. Dick heppnerguy2 points -
Dog cross
Tomanydogs and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Here is one that a cousin of mine ordered. She lost a dog that she had for 18 years and ask me to make her a cross for his grave marker. I got a reply from her yesterday that it had indeed gotten delivered and she said it was perfect. I won't argue with the buyer. I made this on out of cedar, as it was going outside and cedar seems to be a wood that is used outdoors and I too am happy with it. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

Seasonal Plaque “take two for 2021”
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to FrankEV for a topic
Back in November of 2020, I posted a plaque I designed and cut that I intended to hang on the front of our house. It was a play on Winter Wonderland Plaques but made for Winter in Florida. The post was: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/40845-seasonal-plaque/?tab=comments#comment-444798. There was just one problem, I spelled the Word “Welcome” with two ‘L’s”. So, it never got hung. Now it is almost November 2021, so I decided to remake it for this winter. It is the exact same pattern, with “Welcome” spelled correctly. Only change was a slight increase in size to 12” x18”. Words and trees once again cut from 1/4" Maple solid core Plywood and affixed to a 1/2" sanded plywood backer painted Oaisis Blue. Trees painted with Artist Acrylic paints. Plaque was made weatherproof with multiple coats of spray clear gloss polyurethane. So, like I said in that post, come this Winter solstice I'll swap my "Happy Fall Y'all" plaque for this "Welcome to Our Winter Wonderland" plaque. Plaque 2020 turned into firewood. Plaque 2021 (Pic taken with a better camera and lighting) Hope you enjoy. Comments and critiques are always welcome.2 points -
Custom Orders
Tomanydogs and one other reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
What a week! An amazing 2 days at Autumn Topsail with near record sales and 22 custom orders kept me busy this week. Every breed of dog you can imagine... a Basenji? Sure! A Wheaten Terrier? You bet! A Dalmation? But of course! Any breed, any size. Check out the oversized Aussie that was requested. I have so much fun making these things. This is just 1/3 of the custom orders I received and cut this week. Now I have to ship them all out.2 points -
A while back I got into making military emblem plaques for members of my surrounding family that has served... I really enjoyed the little project and all that received them seemed to be really appreciative... I made 4 USMC ones because I wanted to ensure I had enough that I had one for myself... Well that did not work out.... next thing I knew all emblems were gone.. none for Papa.. So,, I made another just for me... Got it done today.. It will go on my wall above my computer desk... I made some enhancement for myself... I increased the size by 20%. The original ones were a little over 7" in diameter,,, mine is 10". I also I increased the size of the "Semper Fidelis" an additional 5% so I could scroll it. On the others I used decal because it was too small for me to scroll. On mine I have about 10 coats of "Gloss" finish on the center part,,, with sanding to 15K grit. between coats... I wanted it to shine. The reat is about 5 coats of simi-gloss. This is the results... First picture is comparison in size, not sure why the Navy one looks so out of round.. it is not... the second is a better picture of mine... I am thinking of making more as time allows, just to give out when the occasion calls for it.. Trust me.. they are well received... I don't think I have made much of anything that seemed to mean so much to the person receiving it....1 point

I use those quite a lot.. I get them at Harbor Freight for like $8-10 each.. They are more of a ball shape than a cone like yours unless you worn yours down like that.. I use it in my drill press though..1 point

Very nice portrait cutting!,,, and the way you did the "Nova" at the bottom really pushes it up several notches....but this old man does not remember.... Maybe I can find that series of movies and rewatch them.. I know I enjoyed them...1 point

I have found that sanding prior to cutting is a big time saver. My planer does a great job when I am getting my hardwoods to thickness, I can usually go straight to a 220 grit after planing. I have also become fond of using the torch to remove the fuzzies, you just have to be careful.1 point
-
Exactly!!! and why I have not put in my 2cents yet.. maybe OP will not come back to respond either.. Also correct blade selection for said project can make the difference of "needing" to sand or not.. Saw dialed in with proper blade alignment also make a world of difference.. I rarely get fuzzies on the back... even with spiral blades.. I pre-sand all my work and rarely have to sand after finishing the project..1 point

I use clear shelf liner first to the wood and then super 77 to adhere the pattern to the shelf liner. I don't wait for the spray adhesive to dry any, I slap it on while still wet. I've found the cheaper liner works best. I recently ordered a box of 12 rolls from one of the dollar stores (sorry, don't remember which) for $17, delivered to their nearest store and picked up their. This new batch leaves just the slightest bit of stickiness on the wood that's easily removed with mineral spirits. Edit: I got the shelf liner at Dollar Tree and it was a dollar a roll for 16 rolls, shipped to the local store for free.1 point

Finally had a chance to work on the King. I tried turning the motor like suggested, a bit of trial and error but I managed to eliminate about 60%of the vibration. As I learn more about the saw I might do better down the line. There does seem to be a sweet spot at about 70% speed. I know it'll take time to dial it in, but I gotta say I'm quite impressed so far. I do gotta say it's much easier to square the table with the blade than my P-20. A huge thanks to everyone who responded to this thread, the information helped a ton. Chris1 point

The OP's question is so vague it almost does not warrent an answer. Everything others have said is all true but there are so many different sanding and finishing processes it is impossible to be sure what answer is appropriate. In this world of Scrolling there are so many different type projects from flat fretwork to sculptured projects. all requiring different sanding methods and equipment. Then there is associated wood working like making frames which also requires sanding and finishing. And , of course, the project wood being used can dictate the appropriate sanding and finishing process. Yes hand sanding is often necessary, especially for very final finishing and between applications of finishing materials slike Lacquer and Polyurethane.. However, the use of many different power sanding equipment is also useful and appropriate during the actual wood working process. Hand held random orbital sanders, belt sanders, spindel sanders, disk sanders sanding mops, rotary tool sanding drumbs and more are very common sanders used by most of us.1 point

Through the years I've had a '57 Gibson Les Paul TV Model (Same one Potsy played on Happy Days) Gibson Les Paul Classic, Fender '52 Tele Special (Probably my favorite) Washburn Acoustic, Fender Strat Mexican, Fender Tele Classic 50, Fender Precision Bass, and currently have a Fender American Deluxe Strat and a Taylor 615E pre dovetail neck. Play through a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue. To old to be carrying amps and equipment playing gigs every weekend. Been on 5 CD projects over the years. Played southern rock, C&W and pop. If you know anyone looking a good Fender Strat and amp, I've got a nice set. Love my Taylor but if someone wanted to pay the price I would consider selling it. Money would go to a new saw.1 point

Will I use a Mac Mop on my lathe to sand even the most fragile of my fret cuttings....... I do not run at this speed,,, but I do use them. I have three grits... 120, 180. 240. I use the the 120 most and it produces a smooth finish equal to 220 grit.. I need to talk to these people the do not really show all the advantages... I use it to get a good smooth finish and to remove almost all the "frizzes" . Been using them for year.. they will last longer than I live..1 point

Is it "REAL" marine ply and not just PT ply? If so where do you buy it. I have a project I want to use a good quality 1/2" thick marine ply that won't deteriate when exposed to the weather . Haven't found a supplier. Thanks. BTW, they are cute!1 point -

Santa House Plaque
Phantom Scroller reacted to FrankEV for a topic
This is a recent Steve Good pattern that I increased in size and cut from 12” x 12” panels. Slightly modified to eliminate the hanging holes and added a forth backer layer to allow the words to be painted. The piece is three layers of 1/8” BB Ply and a 1/4” BB Ply backer for a total 5/8” thick plaque. Painting was done with a combination of Rattle can spray paints and Artist Acrylic paints. The plaque perimeter was cut after painting and the panels were assembled. The plaque was protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Spray Polyurethane, as this will hang outside on my house for the month of December. I was sloppy in cleaning and sanding as some fuzzies can be seen in the photo that are not so apparent in person viewing unless you get up very close. It is hard to clean off fuzzies after the panels were painted. Yes, I tried to make the full moon look real in a stary sky. Hope you enjoy. As always comments and critiques are welcomed.1 point
