    Wooden Dog Puzzles

I've been working in the shop for a while and decided to take a break to photograph a few puzzles I've cut out. These patterns were bought from Iggy. All cut out on 3/4" Poplar using a UR#5 for cutting the outside of the puzzles and then a UR#3 for cutting the inside pieces. Thanks for looking. Jim

  10. Well the nice thing about pumpkins, is you carve them out, use them for a short period and then they rot and you throw them away..... nothing to store,,, AND, they are good to eat also. My wife makes a delicious ground beef thingy that she bakes in the pumpkin,,,, very good. Then there are pies, cakes,,,etc.

    Box Fan Filter?

Here is my take, and it has nothing to do with the metal filters,,, I know nothing about them.. I had a fancy setup with the pipes,,, fancy nice Fein Dust extractor.. I use it for 2 month past its' three year warranty and the motor fired.. I am not going to buy another,, I dug out my old Lasko and hung it on a projector screen stand,,,and have it right next to my saw, I can adjust it to the height I want and easily move it between saws... I've decided this is what I will use from now on.. I honestly have less dust in the shop and house... I know it is working better than the fancy set up I had because my nose does not get plugged up like it use to after hours of sawing... I have more sawdust under my saw that I have to vacuum up, but that only takes a minute and that dust is not floating around the shop or up my nose.. So I am back to where I started many years ago. I am really happy with this setup...

    Finishing-- How to.

I kinda imagined O/P found us doing a google search.. I don't think Travis designed this site to be for only educated questions and discussions either.. I kinda been biting my tongue on that reply of his.. as the written word has no expression and can be read in many different ways.. I don't think he meant it as we are reading it.. but you really do have to be careful how you write things to get them across in the way that you intended. The way it's read by you and I is very demeaning not only to the new person but also Travis too.. as this is the whole reason Travis puts in all his efforts to keep this site up and going smoothly is to help teach others and bring together a online community.. Not to tell them to google and youtube to learn before coming here to ask a question.

  13. Hi all. We had a big software update. I've been kicking this can down the road for the last few months because it's been so crazy at work. I was about 3 software updates behind. Anyway, just like normal, let me know if you see anything strange or isn't behaving the way it should.

    My Latest

Well I have been busy down at my little shop. Sturing up some dust and brushing on some paint. I have been doing some Truck Front's I call'em. and some well known toons. I have several more fronts to do, then I will start on Car Front's. I may do another engine, I kinda liked doing one that still looked like an engine. not the ones you see under your hoods now days.

    Box Fan Filter?

Totally agree.. When I first got the hanging filter I could tell right away that it's not something that'll do great for the whole shop.. I have a big dust collector but it's only hooked up to my planner but that thing is more of a chip collector than fine dust.. Cheap box fan and filter set up has been the most effective and cheapest part of dust collecting. I'm going to get two fans to run.. I have a sanding station that is at the other end of the shop.. I got tired of moving the fan.. The hanging filter system does still get quite a lot of stuff in the filter.. but probably from my sanding station when I'm too lazy to move the fan.. just to sand something small real quick. I have always wanted to set up collection right at the saw.. and I bought a system to build with a cheap metro vac and dust separator thing.. I still haven't built it.. in part because I also bought a Seyco scroll saw dust vac.. basically what I bought to build at double to cost, LOL Anyway since the Seyco was just plug and play I did set that up to my Excalibur... but while not loud.. it's not quiet either and I like to listen to the radio while scrolling.. only time I hear the radio is in between cuts unless I blast the radio so the neighbors can also listen, LOL.. I'm not playing free music for them.. If I have to pay for the cd then I'm not playing it for free to them, .. they can buy their own cd

    Finishing-- How to.

Really @FrankEV ……..!!!!! @Shadow Wizard you don’t need to google or You tube. There is so many years of scroll saw knowledge here at the village and so many kind people to help, you just keep asking what ever you like. I did understand the question and I also dislike sanding, so I’m finding all the tips very useful. Thank you for asking the question. When I first started scrolling I emailed Charles Dearing and asked him (I realize now) an absolutely ridiculous question. He was gracious enough to email me back and with very kind words gave me the best answer he could. I really appreciated that he took the time and reached out to me.

    Steve Good cross

I may have posted this before, but I finished these, my spin on Steve's pattern. Made of birch and pine. One on right has a poplar base and the other has a piece of an old plum limb as its base. These have LED lights in them that I got from Walmart!

  24. A friend bought one of these made out of steel for his garden and asked if I could do one out of wood for the house. Mmm, not to my taste, but he liked it. I think they plan on painting the stars Gold/Silver and put Ferrero Rocher around the base.

    New Sue Mey pattern

Sue Mey recently advertised several patterns like this one. I like it. The base, being cedar, just seems to add to it. The top part is, I think birch, I put linseed oil on front and back, but back really didn't change much in color. Used 0 size spiral! Guess I could have darken the room more to show the lights better. Oh well.

  29. This is Nova, from Planet of the Apes. If you're not familiar, she was named for the chrome Nova logo like this one that she liked. In this picture she is riding horseback behind Caesar the head ape, carrying a handmade doll that ends up playing a huge part in the demise of the evil Woody Harrelson. 1/2" red oak, about 8" X 10".

    Semper Fi to Me

A while back I got into making military emblem plaques for members of my surrounding family that has served... I really enjoyed the little project and all that received them seemed to be really appreciative... I made 4 USMC ones because I wanted to ensure I had enough that I had one for myself... Well that did not work out.... next thing I knew all emblems were gone.. none for Papa.. So,, I made another just for me... Got it done today.. It will go on my wall above my computer desk... I made some enhancement for myself... I increased the size by 20%. The original ones were a little over 7" in diameter,,, mine is 10". I also I increased the size of the "Semper Fidelis" an additional 5% so I could scroll it. On the others I used decal because it was too small for me to scroll. On mine I have about 10 coats of "Gloss" finish on the center part,,, with sanding to 15K grit. between coats... I wanted it to shine. The reat is about 5 coats of simi-gloss. This is the results... First picture is comparison in size, not sure why the Navy one looks so out of round.. it is not... the second is a better picture of mine... I am thinking of making more as time allows, just to give out when the occasion calls for it.. Trust me.. they are well received... I don't think I have made much of anything that seemed to mean so much to the person receiving it....

  37. So, I am cutting VTM clan symbols out of 1/4" thick Alexander Molding poplar hobby board. I am trying to avoid sanding by hand, but I am looking for a way to sand in inside of all my cuts easier, and I find a lot of them are coming out really rough. I hope that provides you the information that you need. I am still a bit put off that I was pounced on because I just didn't know.. Before this, when I needed to sand "something" a bit of wood, metal, cardboard, a car, ANYTHING, I grabbed a piece of sand paper, and rubbed it on there. The ONLY thing I knew what "higher numbers give you finer sanding" Until VERY recently I didn't have the information there was different sand papers for different things. I thought sand paper was sand paper, so I didn't know where was anything else to add. I didn't have the knowledge to know what information was needed or missing. And YES, I DID learn things from those that decided to share information, and from those that asked questions. Interestingly enough I didn't learn a single useful thing from posts that complained that my question was too vague, and suggested it didn't warrant an answer. Interesting how that is, hmm?

  45. Cut this for a friend. It ended up having to be repaired due to there being a void just below the veneer. Thankfully they wanted it painted so I was able to hide the seams. just to the left side of the body in the the middle of the upper wing. "Sanding and paint make me the scroller that I ain't"

  47. Every year, between first part of Aug through Oct, I'm crazy busy at work and hardly able to get into the shop. But I was able to knock these out, which was a lot of fun. Wooden Jack-o’-lanterns made out of some cedar fence boards. Playing around with different finishes. The darker one is burnt with a torch before staining it, which adds a nice effect.
