presents for a grandchild
danny and 10 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have a Granddaughter who is married and her husband is in the Army, so they move every couple of years or so to a different state. She has some state plaques I made her of a couple of the states they have lived in and she asked me for these two so that she would be up to date on them. They are now living in Arizona, not far from where my wife and I live so we get to see then a little more often now. Both of these plaque patterns were made be Sam Custodio. I have cut several of his patterns and enjoyed doing these as well. They are made from 1/4 inch BB ply and have two layers. I used a number 2 MGT Pegas blade. Dick heppnerguy11 points -

Here are a couple that I have done before but made again because they did so well. Now its time to do a little cross country driving so I can get a photo of my Mt. Rushmore project at Mt. Rushmore and some of my buffalo projects at a Bison Ranch in Colorado. I should have made a Wild Bill Hickok to photo in Deadwood SD but I didn't think about it.7 points

invited to school
frankorona and 3 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
As a person who served in the Army, I was invited to two of my granddaughter's school to have lunch in honor of Veterans Day. Because I will be attending there for two of different girls, I will also be in two different classes. So I decided to make a couple of these teacher crosses for the girls to give to their perspective teachers, as a little gift to honor their teachers who do such a great service to our kids, helping to educate them. I saw a photo on another scroll sight of one of these crosses, so I looked and looked to see if I could obtain a pattern from the designer. I was unable to find it again, so I just made one on Inkscape from the way I remember it to look. Not sure how close I was to how it was originally made and if I find out who the pattern maker is, I will pay him for the pattern, if he or she has a charge for them. Dick heppnerguy4 points -
After I made the last Christmas stuff I posted a week or so ago, Sue Mey actually sent me a message and asked me to cut this and take pictures for her to put in her website. After the swelling in my head decreased, this is what I made. I am very humbled for her even ask me. The pattern is much better than my cutting for sure. The arches are made from Baltic birch and I put linseed oil on them. The base is a very old piece of plywood that's older than I am, with just some polyurethane on it.4 points

This was my first show since November of 2019. This is an annual Christmas Boutique at a local church. Been going on for over thirty years. I’ve been doing it for the last six years or so. I’ve always done very well at this boutique, and this year was no exception! They always place me near the entrance to woo the customers. Here are a few pics of my setup. Of course it changes as things sell. I have more stock than I can display, so the display will change as the weekend progress.3 points

I have 3 holiday events remaining but wanted to get a count of what I sold so far in 2021 so I can start preparing for my winter cutting/stockpiling. Snapshot below shows top sellers in each category. Those crazy Dachshund people keep me busy. LOL A good year. Key/Leash racks almost matched puzzle sales. Around 310 puzzles and 280 racks this year and had 3 large events cancelled due to Covid.3 points

Excellent display and products. I really like your small Christmas tree to display ornaments. Definitely one of those now why didn't I think of that things3 points

Nice work and excellent set up / display.. I also have way too much to display everything at a show.. though now that I'm online only and have well over 500 different offerings.. customers seem to think I don't have enough and always asking for something I don't have... LOL Just today a customer said.. "You only have 8 of these.. any chance you'll be getting more? I'd like to order 36 of them to give to my students LOL " Never fails.. If I stock 50 of them.. they'd either not be enough or not sell a signal one.. can't win..3 points

Farm combine
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My granddaughter ask me if I had a pattern for a Farm Combine. I could not find one. After she was gone for about a month I found one and purchased it. She wanted to give it to a neighbor who had been a big help to her and her husband on their farm, as a thank you gift. I have never enjoyed wooden toys much but I decided to try and make one anyway. It was a little complex to understand the patterns at first and I even glued one of them on backwards and had to cut it off and hopefully it could figure out how to do that without damaging the preexisting vehicle. I got lucky on it and was able to cut another piece and put it on without it being noticeable. the wheels and the front cutting roll and the yellow grain shoot pivots too, to give it some interest. It was a little difficult for me but I am glad it came out as well as it did. I plan on making one for a farm guy who gave me a ride in one as he cut his field when I was in Oregon a few months ago. All, I have been fighting some challenges to get out to the shop. Just reached a point in a project that I am thinking adding more will take away from the subject. Please tell me what you think about it. backing: sanded plywood painted patriot blue North America: Walnut Mexico: Purpleheart South America: Yellowheart Africa: Zebrawood Europe: Olivewood Asia: East Indian Rosewood Australia: Red Grandis all dipped with Teak oil. Hope you enjoy this endeavor I tackled. Took me about two months to get to this point. Probably going to have an oak border on it.2 points

Now all our company is gone and back in my shop
Tomanydogs and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
The Steve Good Skull pattern is one like I had on display in our house for a Halloween decoration that my granddaughter, who was visiting from Oregon last week, liked so much I just gave it to her. As soon as they left, I went to my shop and made this one to put back into our decorations for Halloween. It is very easy to make and my wife and I both enjoy displaying it. The second piece is a phone amplifier from Steve Good's pattern offers. I have looked at them for a long time, mainly wondering how well they work. I have to say, they do help some but I really thought they would do a little better job then it did. Easy and quick to make, even for a beginner. Dick heppnerguy2 points -
I use a Dremel plunge router also with a #60. I've got the new 4300 Dremel and haven't had any problem with power at a lower speed. If I have areas in the pattern that will accept a larger bit I'll use my drill press. I also have the smaller chuck to adapt my drill press to a smaller bit but found it didn't center as Ray experienced. When I want to use a bit in my drill press that is smaller than what it will clamp, I'll wrap a small copper wire around the base of the small bit and insert it into the drill press chuck. That seems to work pretty good.2 points

Hi Travis: If adding more (DARK SIDE) sections to this site will bring you more income than GO FOR IT I have learned (with the help of a few Villagers) to keep my mouth shut about Lasers/CNC, and a few other things...LOL - It's not for everyone Personally, I have no use for them - SCROLL SAW means more in the long run than a computer generated design....(My opinion, for what's it's worth) and in no way disrespecting those that choose the DARK SIDE This is your site, Travis, you do one hell of a job keeping us Villagers in line Do what you feel is right and we will live with it - Fab42 points -

Good Craft Show Today

JB I use the 9x12 flat heat shrink bags. They seem to work well with the types of puzzles we make. I get them from papermart.com. 500 for $21.46. about 5 cents each after shipping costs. The only problem I have is trying to shrink them too tight and blowing a hole in them ( my fault ). If it is a small hole I just repair it with a small piece of packing tape. Good luck with your future craft shows.2 points -

+1 for Artcraftersonline.. IF you're looking for one place to buy both brands you can go through Bearwood, Lesley's Patterns, Bushton Manufacturing ( RBI Hawk ). There is another place I have ordered from but can't think of it now.. I have ordered from all the places I mentioned above with good results other than Lesley's Patetrns.. they gave good service but they are sometimes slow at getting them out in the mail.. order well ahead of time if you go through them..2 points -

I get mine from paper mart also. I believe they are 8x12 also. I will check. If the are a different size I will you know. I make most of the same puzzles you do and they all fit in that size. I have to trim some of them a little for the smaller puzzles but they work great.2 points -
WAY TO GO! Also, Michael's craft store sells shrink wrap 9 feet by 60 inches you can cut to size for individual items. Might be more cost effective.2 points

End of day 2 - sales were about as good today as yesterday. All in all, after booth cost, close to $1000. Ended up selling all the Charlie Brown trees!! Wish I could figure out how to market the word in word Christmas signs. I have had those for a few years now and no one seems to look at them.2 points -

Well Day one & done! It was exhausting. Did very well. Hubby turned out to be a great sales guy!!! Was right up there promoting everything. Correcting those that assumed he did the work. Around $450 profit. Funny how everyone thought the Charlie Brown trees were "So Cute", "Great Idea" but haven't sold one!! Santa Keys are good sellers. A few people saying they wished they had them 20 years ago when their kids were younger, but not needed now!2 points -
Thanks. I appreciate your input. I've lightly coated it with Watco natural and will let it sit outdoors for a few days. I'm not in a big hurry so it can wait.1 point

Yes it can be top coated with poly.. I do that from time to time on certain projects.. Just make sure you give it plenty of drying time especially being you're working with Oak.. I think the Danish oil says on the can to wait 48 hours? ( I can't remember ) I usually to to wait a week for oak.. OR.. instead of dipping the wood into the pan of oil I'll more less wipe it on so the grain will pop.. but not soak it since I'm planning to top coat. oak likes to really soak up that oil into the open grain and seep it out for several days after.. Might not bother like that for you in your warmer temps.. I don't usually have that issue in the warmer dryer air.. but in these cooler temps it gives me a hard time.1 point
