    2021 Tally

I have 3 holiday events remaining but wanted to get a count of what I sold so far in 2021 so I can start preparing for my winter cutting/stockpiling. Snapshot below shows top sellers in each category. Those crazy Dachshund people keep me busy. LOL A good year. Key/Leash racks almost matched puzzle sales. Around 310 puzzles and 280 racks this year and had 3 large events cancelled due to Covid.

  8. Just a quick update on my Hawk scroll saw. I received the upgrade kit and installed it yesterday. This kit gives you a new tension arm, cam, & blade holder. It totally fixed my saw and upgraded it at the same time. The instructions that came with the kit were good and RBI came through faster than I thought they would. They asked for pictures of my saws upper arm because they said the model may not work with the kit. Once they received the pics they said it would work and they were right.

    Building a saw stand

I'm planning to build a stand for the King 16". The one point I'm wondering on is what to put between the saw and the bench top to help reduce vibration. I plan to run bolts through the bench top to secure the saw to the bench. But I was thinking a vibration pad might be useless with the saw bolted down. I thought about hockey pucks (I've used these on things like my table saw and bandsaw) but I'm not convinced that would help any either. So I'm wondering, If I'm bolting down to the bench top do I really need anything between the saw and bench top? Chris

    drill bits

So, since this is about blades and drill hole sizes.. I'll put in my two penny's worth, LOL I buy only a 56, 58, and 60 drill bits.. here is something I've learned about the hole size and the blade.. I mostly use Pegas MFG blades and mostly size #3 and #5.. same with FD-UR blades.. The Pegas blades require a bit larger hole.. apparently the blade ends are a bit larger than the blade teeth area? Anyway if I'm doing fine veining detail.. I do not use a Pegas blade because I have to start with a bigger hole and the kerf is small.. I do use a Pegas IF I'm going to be going back over the cut with a spiral blade to widen the kerf.. but if I'm not going to be widening the kerf then the FD-UR blade has a wider kerf to closer match the hole drilled.. I can't remember for sure now what size bit is recommended for the #3 Pegas.. but that drill bit hole won't fit for a #5 Pegas but will fit a #5 FD-UR.. which has a wider kerf than the Pegas #3.. Hope I made sense to you all on this.. This is why I keep and use several brands of blades.. Pegas is my main cutting go to blade.. however in cases like this.. I do use FD or Olsen blades for certain things.. to get better results in the details of the project.

    Building a saw stand

I built my stand from 2X4s and used a 1 1/2 inch thick top from a repurposed table. I did put a layer of tool box drawer liner between the saw and table. The liner is from HF and was very inexpensive. Just to add, I started with a 3/4 inch plywood top and the vibration was intense. That's why I switched to the 1 1/2 inch top. Now the vibration is zero and I'm using a cheap WEN saw. I learned that a solid base is the key!

  13. Hi Pete: Back when I was doing shows, I had these on my table, real small reindeers, 2" high, similar to what you are showing here. People would look at them, said they were cute and kept on walking I think I was asking $5 each - they did have a bow also on them, but didn't sell They were all thinking that these little guys were made in China or from the Dollar store Then, I brought one with me that was just cut and showed the people how to get to the reindeer, Once they were convinced that it was actually made by me on a saw, they literally flew off the table. Show and tell is one great way to get sales. Just thought I would share this little story. Fab4

    Building a saw stand

Chris, try it both ways. I have a P-20 on the stand, not bolted to the floor, and no vibration. Of course, the P-20 is probably one of the heaviest saws. I'd be interested to hear if some vibration reducing pads would make a difference for you. Report back if you decide to do the test for us. Oh, and I hope your cup has a lid on it. Sawdust tends to degrade the taste of your beverage.

  15. I have basically 2 of the same saws you have. I built my own roll-around stands for each one with self-contained vacuum dust control systems. I mounted them both directly to the plywood top. Both of my saws sit on foam shop flooring. The stuff advertised as anti-fatigue mat. I bought enough of the stuff at H/F to do the whole floor of my tiny shop. I get almost zero vibration out of any of my saw. My Hegner is not bolted down to the floor. It just sits on top of that same flooring. I do get a bit of vibration out of it way up in the RPM range but I very seldom got that fast.

Laser & CNC - Special Area

Hahaha...true. Yah, sometimes I'm really busy and it's hard to keep up with SSV. Other times, it's slower and I can focus on our humble little community. One thing for sure, I keep trying to make the place better. Sometimes it works....sometimes it doesn't. It does take a fair amount of work to add a new feature, but once it's set up, it kinda is on auto-pilot. For a little peek behind the curtain, I have a Groups/Clubs function on SSV that I haven't really turned on. It's basically a special interest area. You basically join a group to get access to that section. It includes discussions, galleries, files, etc. The nice thing about it, it's segregated away from the main forum. So unless you're apart of that group, your feed won't be cluttered with stuff you're not interested in. I've been trying to think of a way to integrate it into SSV, and I think it would be good for specialized interest and interests that are a bit more off topic. I figured CNC/Laser would be a good test if there's enough interest. Then I can open other ones. Just off the top of my head, it would be things like General Woodworking, Wood Turning/Pen Turning, craft business centric, maybe one for pattern designers specifically. I'm still kinda working through the details in my head. I think if I was to do this, it would be a premium feature for SSV Silver Patrons and above. I worry about that because it limits the audience. But since it's so specialized and focused, it seems like a nice perk for patrons. A little something extra for those who support SSV. Who knows if it will work. But it's worth considering and maybe giving it a try.

  17. Thanks very much for this idea Travis. I have both a laser engraving machine and a CNC milling/router machine and I would like a little corner for them as it does bring up a lot of negativity from some people on the SSV site. I know, I have experienced it. This is SCROLL SAW VILLAGE trusted site and should remain so but I think a small corner somewhere would be good for people who have these machines. I would relish the chance of learning from others what I need to know about running these machines effectively as I find myself stuck at times and with the different models of machines out there bound to be a few differing ways of working with each of them although I think a common thread may be the language that the operating code is written in (GRBL GCode ??) It seems like you are adding another burden to your workload and I hope it will not be too much to keep a rein on it as well, but if you wish I would certainly like a separate area where we could ask about projects etc. take care and stay safe Don W

  18. I would definitely post more of my projects and maybe try to add some how to info etc. to a specific question if we had a specific spot for it so long as it was welcome by everyone.. I don't post too much of my experiences and projects here in the village because I've seen some pretty mad folks on the scroll saw sites and FB groups over the years.. many of them seem threatened by CNC and laser work.. so I just slip one in on here just now and then.. not to upset the scroll saw community. I don't necessarily post anything on any of the laser / scroll saw groups either because there are some that seem to not really be interested in folks asking questions.. I'm far from being anything close to experienced with either machine.. there is just no place with a group of friendly people like we have here with the village.. Hate to upset those folks here if they would rather not see this added.. we have a special scroll saw group here.. I'd say maybe you should run a voting pole thing to see if it would be good with everyone. We kinda have the "Other Woodworks" section..

  19. I suspect that if we all were to write a list of the 10 things we are most grateful for, at least 5 of them on each list would be the same. And there is nothing wrong in that. I had an old man tell me one time to go beyond the typical list of things and find the eleventh thing you are thankful for. Once you begin to go beyond your typical answers, 11 becomes 12 and so on, ever increasing. It is really amazing how many things we have to be thankful for, although it is easier to go along with those who tell you how bad things are. Today as I attempt to consider something to add to my ever increasing list of things to be grateful for, I suppose it might be time to thank all of the folks who have allowed me to be helpful to them in whatever small way it was. Yes, I am thankful to and for them, and that I can still find something purposeful to do in each new day.

  20. Howdy all. I know there's a few of us here that play with lasers, CNC, cutters like the Silhouette Cameo, 3d printers, etc. I was thinking of making a small section for those of us that want to chat about stuff like that, share pics, files, etc. It'll be tucked into a small corner of SSV, separate from the scroll saw stuff, but have a lot of the same cool functionality. I wanted to gauge interest. Post below if this is something you'd like.

    2021 Tally

That's great to hear Scott, I hope you outsell your best year. My sales are down 4% from last year but my revenue is up 10% Might be something to do with raising most of my prices.. But could also be because last year a lot of the whole world was on lockdowns and lots of online shoppers, and this year more people getting back out to the stores etc.. I'm actually surprised I'm only down 4% to be honest. Last year was way up like 30% more than the previous year so I was expecting a huge drop this year after things opened back up. But there is still over 1.5 months left for me to do better or worst, LOL

    Building a saw stand

I don't think with the new King you have you'd need any cushion.. I had a Dremel 1800 saw years ago and that had some vibration right at the speeds I liked cutting at.. there were sweet spots ( a few of them ) but none the speed I wanted, and it was bolted to a nice metal ( factory dremel ) stand. I ended up using a piece of scrap carpet padding that I had left from replacing some carpet.. I put it between the saw and the stand and bolted it back down.. I ran the saw at the speeds I like and kept tightening the bolts rotating to each bolt a 1/2 turn or so at a time and I was able to make that saw run smooth mostly all the way through the speed dial.. there was one spot that still had a bit more vibration but it was still not to the point I couldn't cut at that speed.. I'd say bolt it directly to the stand.. If you have a issue.. maybe some padding could help.. but I don't think with these style saws you'll have any issue.

    Building a saw stand

Once I get it dialed in there isn't much, I strive for zero vibration, just my OCD kicking in. My Delta P-20 isn't bolted to the floor and has almost zero vibration, I can set a cup on the back of the table while cutting and it will still be there when I'm done cutting the piece. Pretty much the amount, if any vibration is strictly subjective to the person behind the saw. If you can get the saw to where you're comfortable, then you're good. I'm really on the fence as to weather or not I need any cushion between the saw and the bench top at all.

Ray, I have a Jet JDP -17DX Drill Press. The chuck closes all the way. The only info on the chuck itself says "1 - 16mm JT3". Here is the manual for the DP. It has a Parts list in it, don't know how much info it gives.. I haven't got time to research it right now, I am just taking a break from trying to repair my clothes washer... Don't know what the heck I am doing, but I am giving it a try... DP manual: 354173_man_EN.pdf

  49. Well I would like to say Thanks to all in the village that helped me in the last year. I feel I learned a lot you this site. I joined last December, and have experimented with the scroll saw a bit during the weekends. Thanks to @FrankEV for bringing color to the craft of scrollsaw artwork. Thanks @OCtoolguy for advising to upgrade to a Hawk. I almost gave up the hobby. Once I got the Hawk quite a bit LESS frustration occured. He advises many people not just me. Thanks @trailfndr "Lee" for showing me great Intarsia projects. Also @Dave Monk his stuff inpires everyone. @GrampaJim and @White horse @Scrappile all give great tips and super looking projects. All the bowl guys gave me good tips. @Tbow388 he makes them look easy and pretty. @crupiea his detailed lettered plaques are inspiring. Thanks Travis for keeping this village running with latest software. Also because of his inkscape tutorials I can fiddle around in inkscape. Also @Rockytime Les, inspired and advised many many people, including me. But it takes everyone to form a village. Thanks for all contributers even the newbies. The newbies bring new questions and different perspectives to the projects.
