    New Ornaments

Some more ornaments, latest SSW and crafts magazine. The single ornament took 1 1/2hrs of cutting, the other two I stack cut, 1 3/4hrs cutting. 40 holes in both patterns. FD #1 polar blades, one blade did both patterns.

    one from Tombstone

A couple of weeks ago I took one of my grandsons to Tombstone, Arizona. He was very excited about the trip and had a real love for the movie "Tombstone" and very familiar with what we were about to see. He told me on the way home that he really wanted me to make him something as a reminder of our trip there, for Christmas. This is what I came up with for him and I am pretty sure he will love it when he opens it. Dick heppnerguy

    Making The World

All, I have been fighting some challenges to get out to the shop. Just reached a point in a project that I am thinking adding more will take away from the subject. Please tell me what you think about it. backing: sanded plywood painted patriot blue North America: Walnut Mexico: Purpleheart South America: Yellowheart Africa: Zebrawood Europe: Olivewood Asia: East Indian Rosewood Australia: Red Grandis all dipped with Teak oil. Hope you enjoy this endeavor I tackled. Took me about two months to get to this point. Probably going to have an oak border on it.

    ReRuns and now vacation.

Here are a couple that I have done before but made again because they did so well. Now its time to do a little cross country driving so I can get a photo of my Mt. Rushmore project at Mt. Rushmore and some of my buffalo projects at a Bison Ranch in Colorado. I should have made a Wild Bill Hickok to photo in Deadwood SD but I didn't think about it.

  12. I have a Granddaughter who is married and her husband is in the Army, so they move every couple of years or so to a different state. She has some state plaques I made her of a couple of the states they have lived in and she asked me for these two so that she would be up to date on them. They are now living in Arizona, not far from where my wife and I live so we get to see then a little more often now. Both of these plaque patterns were made be Sam Custodio. I have cut several of his patterns and enjoyed doing these as well. They are made from 1/4 inch BB ply and have two layers. I used a number 2 MGT Pegas blade. Dick heppnerguy

    2021 Tally

I have 3 holiday events remaining but wanted to get a count of what I sold so far in 2021 so I can start preparing for my winter cutting/stockpiling. Snapshot below shows top sellers in each category. Those crazy Dachshund people keep me busy. LOL A good year. Key/Leash racks almost matched puzzle sales. Around 310 puzzles and 280 racks this year and had 3 large events cancelled due to Covid.

    2021 Tally

Thanks Dick, yes, seriously, I couldn't have stumbled upon a better gig. Even after 5 years I very much enjoy making the items as well as going to events and selling them... I can see myself doing this well into retirement... in another decade. LOL If I ever do start getting burnt out I can simply reduce the number of events.

  15. I think it is a great idea. I dont know if I will get to own/use a engraver but I am interested in them and it would be great to have a area to learn more.

  16. Most of the objections I’ve heard from scrollers about lasers revolve around cutting with them as opposed to engraving with them. I have no interest in cutting things out with a laser, but I have on a number of occasions burned something onto a project I’m scrolling. I do a lot of puzzles and have lasered the backs of some before cutting them with special messages. I’m seriously thinking of adding an inexpensive laser to my tool arsenal so I can do my engraving at home. A place to discuss the ins and outs of this tech would be welcomed for me.

You have built an amazing bussiness with your puzzles. I admire how well you have been able to sell your things. the nice thing about the puzzles is they are not that time consuming to make compared to a lot of other scroll pieces but you have certainly found your nitch. So happy for you. Dick heppnerguy

  18. Hi Pete: Back when I was doing shows, I had these on my table, real small reindeers, 2" high, similar to what you are showing here. People would look at them, said they were cute and kept on walking I think I was asking $5 each - they did have a bow also on them, but didn't sell They were all thinking that these little guys were made in China or from the Dollar store Then, I brought one with me that was just cut and showed the people how to get to the reindeer, Once they were convinced that it was actually made by me on a saw, they literally flew off the table. Show and tell is one great way to get sales. Just thought I would share this little story. Fab4

  36. After I made the last Christmas stuff I posted a week or so ago, Sue Mey actually sent me a message and asked me to cut this and take pictures for her to put in her website. After the swelling in my head decreased, this is what I made. I am very humbled for her even ask me. The pattern is much better than my cutting for sure. The arches are made from Baltic birch and I put linseed oil on them. The base is a very old piece of plywood that's older than I am, with just some polyurethane on it.

  38. HOLD IT!!! I thought Intarsia was the DARK SIDE LOL. Just joking. I would be very interested in a CNC/Lasers Section if it doesn't cause you to have more work Travis. I have a CNC that has been sitting under a tarp for the last year because my laptop died on me. And I'm looking at getting a Laser for my Dog Leash Holders. Maybe this will get me to looking for a used laptop and get this going again. Thanks Jim

    New Experience

I cut everything from 1/8-inch to 1-1/2-inch. I stack cut only if there is some advantage, but usually I only need one part. Lately I have been cutting thin parts from the thick wood and the resawing to the thickness I need. That's sort of like stack cutting. I find that when I change from one thickness to another there is s short period of adjustment.

    drill bits

I use the Seyco Scrollers drill most of the time it handles the micro bits very very well and these small bits will last much longer in the this little drill versus drill press or hand drill. .

  47. I’m with the others, it’s adding more work for you but if you want to undertake it, I’d be interested, the Special Groups function might be one way of doing it to keep it a little more segregated from the Village and thus from those who might not want to see it. However, I know that many would also be interested in seeing the work being done even if they don’t have the equipment it’s self. So they would not be able to see it without having to join the special group. I pretty much have all the equipment you referenced and then some. I’m happy to help you in any way that I can. Just let me know if there is a way I can be of assistance.

  48. I’ve tried the speaker enhancement box. Now I doubt that I ever will. I cut 3 of the skulls last year. On two of them I cut the spider on a very slight forward relief cut and they gave it the appearance of them being on the surface of the forehead.

    New Experience

I must be the 'odd one out',, I've only ever used 1/8th singly for my patterns, as photo. I very rarely have reason to stack cut. I generally use Niqua #3 blades and have my saw below full on and never really had a problem. In fact stack cutting scares me a bit as I'm not sure I'm good enough to try although not sure why as I learned to scroll on ¼" wood.

  50. Most of what Kevin says is great advice. However, as a former professional packaging supply & equipment salesman, I need to offer a correction and a suggestion. Large bubble, 1/2", is not designed for protection, but is designed to be used as void fill. Small bubble, 3/16", is what you want to use to wrap items for protection, as that is what it was designed to do. Always wrap items with the bubble out, as bubble can have an abrasive effect on finished items. Thicker foam, 1/8"-1/4" is a good alternative for bubble, but more expensive. Bubble and foam are both sold at Home Depot for a reasonable price in lesser quantities. For larger void fill requirements, I have found empty.5 liter, or 16.9oz water bottles with the cap firmly tightened, a great option. They are strong, lightweight, and large enough to fill bigger spaces, and if you loosen the cap, you can slightly crush them to fit odd shapes, tightening the cap again after forming them. I shipped a laptop to a former employer using water bottles, and they performed well.
