Politics & SSV
new2woodwrk and 7 others reacted to Travis for a topic
Politics bad. Scroll sawing good! Please refrain from political discussions.8 points -
Rules about politics and religious discussions are in the User Guidelines, which everybody agreed to when signing up for SSV. It's been there since 2009 when I launched the website. It applies site-wide. We've long established a place to talk about woodworking and chatting with our fellow scrollers, minus politics and religion. The truth is, we all have different viewpoints. A post will not change anybody's mind. But that post will quickly destroy friendships we tried so hard to foster. I've been running online communities since 1992 using BBSs and dialup modems on a 1200baud modem. I've seen this destroy more communities that I'd like to count. I worked hard to keep SSV running smoothly and without drama. I don't think it's too much to ask that we keep political discussions off SSV. If you want to ruin friendships and argue with strangers, Facebook is the place to be. If you want to talk about making sawdust and talk shop, SSV is the place to be. Thanks for understanding.8 points

Hello, I am Bennys daughter and he would be so happy you all were asking about him. Thank you. My dads health declined rapidly over the past month. He had fallen a few times and was weak. His mind was sharp as ever but his body was tired. Dad has made so many wonderful wood working gifts for my daughters and my grandchildren we will treasure them always. Take care and enjoy your life Sheryl5 points

made another farm combine
namunolie and 3 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I decided to make another farm combine for a farming friend but I liked the natural wood color and decided not to paint it. If you have seen some of my other posts you already know that I am not very satisfied when i do try to paint a project. I left all the finish off this one so the recipient can choose to paint it, if they wish to do so. In the front view of this one, it appears that the turning cutters, ( for lack of real knowledge on farm equipment ), are bent on the right side as you look at it, but in fact they are straight. I am not sure why the photograph makes it look that way so I thought I would mention that before someone else does. I ended up cutter three sets of the circle pieces in the front of the machine because the first two sets fit very tightly and I had breakage. Finally I gave up on the pieces being made of cedar and instead decided to use BB Ply for that part. I hope I am learning something from this endeavor.4 points -
I think the words '' I just want to remind everybody that political discussions and debates are not allowed on SSV.'' Are suffice and concise enough for anyone to comprehend.4 points

@Sheryl S. Thank you Sheryl for taking the time to reply here. All our 'family' here are saddened by your dads passing, he was a much respected member of our little group and will be sadly missed. Many of us here never actually meet in person (I'm in the U.K) but we do make lifelong friends through our love of the scrollsaw. With Deep Sympathy and Respect to you and yours. Brenda4 points

I checked in the "Suppliers" and I it appeared to list only the two mentioned here.. I guess some of the other I recognize as pattern suppliers also sell supplies. But it is not very complete.. Isn't there a Heritage Wood: https://www.heritagewood.com and darn, can't think of the other I had in my head a few minutes ago....He sells online and I think in some hobby shops.. Anyway.. The ones mentioned are who I usually buy from... Never been disappointed.. I have found with Ocooch wood I have to be sure I stack it properly and let it climatize a couple weeks before I use it... Not their fault, just a difference in climate from them to me.. I just plan ahead for it.4 points

Another Steve Good Pattern
namunolie and 2 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I was looking for a project to cut for one of my granddaughter when I came across this Steve Good pattern and showed it to my wife. She said that is a great pattern for the granddaughter I cut this one for. I started to cut it out of Red Cedar but the sawdust would not blow from the pattern and continued to build up in front of the blade. I was using a #1 Pegas blade and no.... I was not put on upside down. It became so much of a problem, I quit cutting it and made if from BB Ply instead. I still liked it well enough but I was a little disappointed by not being able to cut it from the wood I had chosen for it. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

I get a lot of my wood from LLJohnson Lumber ( The Work Bench ) in Charlotte Michigan.. Take a drive and check out the place sometime.. they have a showroom of tools etc.. lots of different lumber from domestic to exotic.. plywood.. Baltic birch plywood. They'll cut to size.. they'll plane lumber to size. they sell lumber carry bundle packs where they give you bulk pricing on smaller carry packs. The more you buy the better the deals, LOL They run a "wood expo " every September and have huge sales on everything they sell, have vendors there and do demonstrations.. It's usually a three day event. The town of Charlotte also have what they call "frontier days" and all kind of events going on in that small town at the same time. They have a craft show going on in and around the courthouse lawn etc.. They're running a Black Friday sale and have vendors and demos too I think. http://theworkbench.com/3 points

I have been busy cutting and painting, I cut a good few days of painting out. Then I spend a few days of painting. If that makes since, I have a few more trucks to cut and paint then I want to start on the Cars from the CARS movie. I believe it was Scrappile who wanted to see a 66 Ford. I hope I did it justice.2 points

Farm combine
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My granddaughter ask me if I had a pattern for a Farm Combine. I could not find one. After she was gone for about a month I found one and purchased it. She wanted to give it to a neighbor who had been a big help to her and her husband on their farm, as a thank you gift. I have never enjoyed wooden toys much but I decided to try and make one anyway. It was a little complex to understand the patterns at first and I even glued one of them on backwards and had to cut it off and hopefully it could figure out how to do that without damaging the preexisting vehicle. I got lucky on it and was able to cut another piece and put it on without it being noticeable. the wheels and the front cutting roll and the yellow grain shoot pivots too, to give it some interest. It was a little difficult for me but I am glad it came out as well as it did. I plan on making one for a farm guy who gave me a ride in one as he cut his field when I was in Oregon a few months ago. Politics & SSV
John B and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I also agree with Travis and what he says. Politics and religion are beliefs people have and although I appreciate that someone has a different view point on these subjects then I may have, I do not like someone trying to run their ideas on this subject down my throat. Everyone is free to believe what they wish and they should be willing to talk about why they believe something to be true , even if it does not agree with my view point, but only for discussion in a friendly way and not to try and prove another persons view to be wrong. This is NOT a place they need to do this but in a private discussion, in person, should one wish to discus their view points. Dick heppnerguy2 points -
From 2021 pattern book
Jim Blume and one other reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
I purchased the 2021 pattern book not to make ornaments or patterns to sell but because I loved the designs. A friend collects angels so this was perfect. I have cut a couple so far and these are really easy as not too many holes. The angel below uses a different font a getting 9 character name in was bit of a challenge. I added the year for fun. Thank you to Travis for these.2 points -

my hat is off to your daughter for her great painting job. They will look really nice on any tree. Can I borrow her the next time I want to paint something, I am horrible with painting my projects. Well cut and the display keeps your eyes scanning them all as they are so nice and I did not want to miss any of them Dick heppnerguy2 points -

I am not sure where this should be posted. As ArtCrafters Scroll Saw, I send out a newsletter twice a month. Lester's widow responded to the newsletter. She has all of Lester's scroll saw and supplies and doesn't know what to do with them. I asked for a list. She is located in Colorado. If I receive some information, I will forward.2 points -
I can't add anything to what has already been said. Thank you Sheryl. Prayers and condolences to you and your family. May Benny rest in peace.2 points

First I would try a little more tension. Second try a different brand blade. Third I would try adjusting saw speed and feed rate. One thing I have found in 13 years of using my Hegner is once you find the tension sweet spot you stop most of the blade breakage2 points

Yes, that is so nice to hear from a family member. Thank you @Sheryl S! Many times online friends just up and disappear and you never really get any closure to what happen to them. Since Ben is also from Michigan his friendship here was different to me as we messaged back and forth about local lumber suppliers etc.. I wish we would have been able to meet up in person but that just never happened. He will surely be missed. My condolences to the family. Kevin2 points

On my Hegner, at the top of the stroke, the point of contact with the bottom of the wood is about 1 inch above the bottom clamp. It would make sense for blades to commonly break there, heat and stress would be highest at that point.2 points

Hi John, is your site still active? I've decided to sell my Eclipse scroll saw, used very lightly for a couple of months back when new. Great design. So, I'm looking for an audience who would appreciate it. Thanks, Mike Ward2 points

Good places to Purchase Scrolling Wood
Mark SW and one other reacted to bossdriver for a topic
I have done very well by watching Craig's list under materials. I found a local individual who owns a sawmill up north and sell from his home. Also, a fellow that had a big pile of hardwood in a barn on a property he was flipping and sold it very reasonably to me.2 points -

I ordered a BM-20 Hawk October 1st and I received it Friday November 12th. I was told it would be 6 to 8 weeks and it was. It was very well packaged. Setup only took about an 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I made a few cuts and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth cuts, and low vibration. I still need to learn all the new adjustments to fine tune.1 point

Farm combine

Hello MR Jones! Very neat combine. Nicely done. Toys are a joy in their own right. "Like the song-- Billy Bob & Joleen--should have been RED!" (O.K.-Just my preference showing) As an old farm boy, the only combines I ever ran were green & yellow-- they were actually great machines. My Brother-in-law--has ran red all his life & I have known him for over 70 years now. I am now going to have to make one-- I will use the T & E designs version though! I do expect some fire wood from my first effort!1 point -

I do not have a photo of either of the clocks I cut so i used this one for demonstration purposes. the John Wayne is one I cut for my son in law for his last birthday. These are NOT easy ones for me. that is the differences. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Another Steve Good Pattern
wombatie reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
You should be here with us in Southern Arizona as it still seems like summer for most of the United States here, as we are still having temperatures daily in the mid 80's. We almost never get rain and if we do, it very rarely lasts more then an hour of two. Never do we get snow here but on rare occasions we might see a hail storm the passes through. It is always connected to a monsoon which only happens in the summer month. The bad thing about the monsoons is it causes instant flooding but is very isolated and only lasts a short time. I does bring our summer 110 degrees down to a cooler feeling 80 degrees while it is blasting an area with its water. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Not shure what you are looking for, but I go to this place, Wible Lumber, in South Milford, Indiana. Might be a little drive but they sell all kinds of wood in board lengths also end cuts from all kinds of wood. Would be great for intarsa projects.1 point

Another Steve Good Pattern
heppnerguy reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
Great job, Dick. I had a little trouble with a piece of wood that built up dust and I couldn't see the lines. The blower was working properly. Turned out the wood I had selected had gotten wet a few days earlier and there was moisture in the wood. It wasn't much but just enough to cause the dust to stick and not blow away. I'm sure if I would have had a stronger blower, it would have worked fine but there was just enough moisture to cause it to stick around the blade and the saw blower wasn't enough to do the job.1 point -
