    Trivet

I designed and cut this trivet for my wife's aunt who has cancer that will likely be terminal. I love this comforting verse from an old hymn, He Leadeth Me. I've probably sung it 1,000 times but only a couple of years ago recognized that this verse is referring to the 23rd Psalm. It's about 8" and cut in red oak.

    60th anniversary

I was trying to fine something to make for my wife, to give her tomorrow on our 60th anniversary. I came up with the idea of making her a couple of intaria pieces that would sort of picture our 60 years of marriage. These JGR patterns seem to be just the thing. So we have one plaque signifying our wedding and our start on our new journey in life, followed by the one of two elderly people, still holding hands and in love with each other, (as we are today). I believe the idea is really good and per-tenant. Problem being they are too big to really find a good place to display them. Perhaps I can cut the backer board out, leaving just the figures and that might work better. But for now, she will receive tomorrow what I am posting today Dick heppnerguy

    Red Solo Cup

Fun, useful project. I don't know if this is practiced world wide but here in Alabama it's common at a gathering to put your name on a plastic cup with a Sharpie so you can keep up with which cup is yours. Toby Keith has a song about it, "Red Solo Cup." My family usually makes up names. We're headed on a family vacation next week and my wife requested I make one of these. I added the text which is a line from the song. We don't usually have anything stronger than Dr. Pepper in ours.

  4. Steve posted these patterns a couple weeks ago. Finally sat down at the saw yesterday and cut all 10 and then some. As you can see I stack cut these so I now have 30+ ornaments to paint and assemble. They were cut on my Pegas using mgt #3. I did cut one full size snowflake for the window, I duplicated the top layer so it is two sided. The other 10 I reduced to 50% so they are better sized for the tree. My wife wants a full size set for the house windows now so I guess I better get back to the saw.

  5. My brother owns a lumber mill and I sometimes get a few boards here and there that they are going to toss out. Monday he called me and said he had a couple Walnut boards that I could have if I wanted them. If not he was going to cut them up and burn them in his wood stove. Here is the result.. all rough cut, most of it 6.5 foot long.. a few pieces are shorter because I cut them down so I could shut my tailgate on the truck.

  6. Just finished up this Christmas Train that is Steve Goods pattern. This is cut on 3/4" Poplar and I printed the pattern out on 8.5x14 paper and blew the image up to130%. Next one I'm thinking I might use some Walnut and put a clear coat on it. Thanks for looking Jim

  7. Just finished 15 of these snowflakes. Kevin did most of the work for me. I had to sand them and paint them and glue the backe on. They came out good. Also finished these word art plaques that Don was good enough to make the patterns for me. Thanks again Don.

    My New work

I have been busy cutting and painting, I cut a good few days of painting out. Then I spend a few days of painting. If that makes since, I have a few more trucks to cut and paint then I want to start on the Cars from the CARS movie. I believe it was Scrappile who wanted to see a 66 Ford. I hope I did it justice.

  13. Great score! If you need to get rid of some I am only a 90 miles south. Your score is like my friend's he got walnut logs free and paid $400 dollars to have 1500 bdft milled. He made his own kiln so he my go to for walnut, I can't beat his price.

  14. I rarely use Walnut.. mostly because I won't buy it.. Love the look and nice to work with but pricey. Sometimes a customer will request it so I try to make sure to have a couple boards around. it's kind of a hit and miss thing with getting lumber at this scale.. The sad thing is about this walnut or any pile of lumber like this that I get is.. Customers bring in their logs to my brother and pay him to cut it.. He sticker stacks it and then they never come to get it. He was paid 10 years ago for this walnut. Customer never come picked it up.. and then he looses contact with customer so this pile for instance.. There was 6 times this amount on the stack however the top 1/3 and the bottom 1/3 of the two big stacks was rotted so bad that you try to lift a board up and it just crumbles into pieces. The deal was I go through the stacks and clean up the rotted stuff by putting what is junk but solid enough to burn into a bin after I cut it into 4ft lengths so they can fit in his wood boiler. salvaged lumber goes to me.. the crumbled up mess I have to run the articulating loader tracker with the bucket to scoop it up and dispose of it into another big bin. I spend a better part of a afternoon to get this. Many times there's not that much "good" lumber.. Had it been something other than walnut I probably might have declined the deal. Last year I got a couple loads of maple.. some spalted and some birdseye etc.. That was about the same size load of lumber I got. He goes through and cleans this stuff up every few years.. I can get all the free cutoffs from the mill so long as I stand there and sort it as they run the mill.. fresh off the saw.. The issue with that is I have to be there to do it and it's green / undried.. Those short pieces many times split if you try to run in the kiln.. sometimes stickered and air drying I can get lucky and salvage maybe half of what I drag home.. but has to be sticker dried for at least a year.. Just not a very practical way to do it.. I am fortunate to be able to do all this but it does come with a price and a lot of work / hassle to sell it.. My brother that owns the mill is my oldest brother of 7 brothers and I am the youngest. He's ( I think ) around 75 and this year has started a half retirement or just kinda working part time.. I'd love to go through my brothers stash of lumber.. Over the years when they'd run across some really neat grain etc.. he saved out some stuff.. being in the lumber business his whole life.. He has a big building stuffed full of really neat and probably rare pieces. I imagine one day I'll go through it.. He has told me several times to go in and sort through and take what I want.. as he'll never use it all. Problem.. none off it is really organized at all.. and I just don't have time to spend months / years going through it, LOL There is enough lumber in there to fill up several flat bed semi trucks.. LOL

  15. A couple of weeks ago I took one of my grandsons to Tombstone, Arizona. He was very excited about the trip and had a real love for the movie "Tombstone" and very familiar with what we were about to see. He told me on the way home that he really wanted me to make him something as a reminder of our trip there, for Christmas. This is what I came up with for him and I am pretty sure he will love it when he opens it. Dick heppnerguy

  16. Clearly the definition of a "couple" is different in Michigan then it is here in East TN. Thank you for saving all that beautiful wood from the wood stove. Feel free to stop and drop off any excess you have next time you are traveling through this way on your way to the beach. Rough cut is no issue, DH has a planer, a jointer, and a large sander so I can make it work.

  17. He travelled the roads In years gone past A life he chose and Hoped it would last. Driving all night From state to state Trying to get home And arriving so late. He’s parked his truck now His engine has stopped And those who love him Their hearts have dropped. He travelled the country With a smile of great pride Now he drives the streets of Heaven On the truckers last ride. You will be missed Brad !!!

  18. Howdy all. I know there's a few of us here that play with lasers, CNC, cutters like the Silhouette Cameo, 3d printers, etc. I was thinking of making a small section for those of us that want to chat about stuff like that, share pics, files, etc. It'll be tucked into a small corner of SSV, separate from the scroll saw stuff, but have a lot of the same cool functionality. I wanted to gauge interest. Post below if this is something you'd like.

  20. I was looking for a quick piece to cut for a new decoration and I found this one on Steve Good's page and liked it , so here is how it turned out. I only used BB Birch ply so it isn't anything really special but i still enjoyed cutting it and giving it to my wife. Dick heppnerguy

  22. I was looking for a project to cut for one of my granddaughter when I came across this Steve Good pattern and showed it to my wife. She said that is a great pattern for the granddaughter I cut this one for. I started to cut it out of Red Cedar but the sawdust would not blow from the pattern and continued to build up in front of the blade. I was using a #1 Pegas blade and no.... I was not put on upside down. It became so much of a problem, I quit cutting it and made if from BB Ply instead. I still liked it well enough but I was a little disappointed by not being able to cut it from the wood I had chosen for it. Dick heppnerguy

  36. My gosh... I come here to get away from politics,,, all kinds of places to talk politics other than a scrolling forum but here we have 2 pages of response on no politics.. We all just cannot let it go.... I was the one that recently complained to Travis about a political thread,,, he shut it down.. but here we are... on an on... I guess I do not fit in here any more...I get my political fix at political forums and fake new out lets,,,not on the wood working forums I belong to... guess I need a break... let me know when Believe me I am political, but I pick the appropriate places...

    Farm combine

My granddaughter ask me if I had a pattern for a Farm Combine. I could not find one. After she was gone for about a month I found one and purchased it. She wanted to give it to a neighbor who had been a big help to her and her husband on their farm, as a thank you gift. I have never enjoyed wooden toys much but I decided to try and make one anyway. It was a little complex to understand the patterns at first and I even glued one of them on backwards and had to cut it off and hopefully it could figure out how to do that without damaging the preexisting vehicle. I got lucky on it and was able to cut another piece and put it on without it being noticeable. the wheels and the front cutting roll and the yellow grain shoot pivots too, to give it some interest. It was a little difficult for me but I am glad it came out as well as it did. I plan on making one for a farm guy who gave me a ride in one as he cut his field when I was in Oregon a few months ago. 38. Kevin, I have no idea how often you get a load like that but have you thought of going into the scroll saw wood business? It might prove to be profitable. You're getting the wood for free so it's just the milling. The rest is profit.

    SSV's Political Platform

Ever thought of sitting down and writing all your 'gripes' on a piece of paper? Then you could just screw it up with as much vehemence as you wish without cluttering the 'ether' or offending anyone at all, bin it or burn it and still feel better. !

  45. I agree Paul. I think the Pegas blades may be a bit harder and may snap a bit quicker than other brands.
    1 point
  46. I break more Pegas blades than FD. But they seem to break at the time I am thinking I need to change the blade because I am having a harder time controlling it do to wear.. Seems to me have a tendency to snap when worn, where as other blades do not... May just be my imagination. Never worried about it, I get my use out of them...

    First Project

I know that this is way below the level of most of you but here is my first project - almost! I used food coloring to dye the wood to make it non-toxic. Still trying to figure out which color(s) to stain the outline of the puzzle. BTW - definitely not my puzzle design!

  48. Hi Pete: Back when I was doing shows, I had these on my table, real small reindeers, 2" high, similar to what you are showing here. People would look at them, said they were cute and kept on walking I think I was asking $5 each - they did have a bow also on them, but didn't sell They were all thinking that these little guys were made in China or from the Dollar store Then, I brought one with me that was just cut and showed the people how to get to the reindeer, Once they were convinced that it was actually made by me on a saw, they literally flew off the table. Show and tell is one great way to get sales. Just thought I would share this little story. Fab4
