  1. Just finished 15 of these snowflakes. Kevin did most of the work for me. I had to sand them and paint them and glue the backe on. They came out good. Also finished these word art plaques that Don was good enough to make the patterns for me. Thanks again Don.

    Couple of Oak Cuts

After cutting out 180+ Christmas ornaments I needed a change. 3/4" Oak sure cuts differently from stack cutting BB plywood. It was a nice change of pace. A couple of Steve Good's patterns. . .

    New Hawk has arrived

I know this is off subject. But my wife bought me my first good Scroll saw The Delta SS350 at our clubs annual show for my birthday back in 2004. A year later I bought the Hawk G4 26 because of all the great new design features. Top feeding, adjustable front/back stroke. The Hawk has made a lot of money for me and even more priceless joy. My wife does all of the inventory, painting and boxing. She has also bought me some really exceptional tools and the occasional bottle of Grand Marnier.

    New Hawk has arrived

I'm still trying, after 47 years, to figure out how those marriage vows worked their way into smoking (BBQ), woodworking, and my 1 PBR per night when I return home after work. It is a poser for sure.

  8. I was looking for a quick piece to cut for a new decoration and I found this one on Steve Good's page and liked it , so here is how it turned out. I only used BB Birch ply so it isn't anything really special but i still enjoyed cutting it and giving it to my wife. Dick heppnerguy

  9. Good morning all. I thought I would get off of my duff and join a Scroll Saw forum now that I am getting more into scroll sawing. I have owned a vintage ~1935 Delta 700 that I restored about 15-years ago, or so, and only used it twice. For wood art, I am more into using the lathe, but I recently volunteered to be a troop leader for a boys club. I thought it would be great to introduce these boys to wood working and using a scroll saw. Because of this, I blew the dust off of my Delta 700 and started making some simply Christmas ornaments as samples for the boys, and in the meantime, I picked up 7 16" scroll saws on CraigsList ($50 and under was my budget) for the boys to use. Needless to say, they are anticipating using them, and on the first Wednesday in December, they will touch their first scroll saw. After a safety talk, and some rules, I'll start them on some practice patterns, and then once they are comfortable with it, they will start making Christmas ornaments. Also, as I have been scrolling, I picked up a Hawk G4, that needs a little work done. Parts are cheap, and I can get it up and running for under $60, I hope. I also have a 1960's Craftsman 18" saw that uses 6" blades, so that one will be a pain to locate blades for. But, I say all of this as I think I found another hobby, to add to my wood working hobby, as I will be making samples for the boys as they get more into scroll sawing. Also, this place looked like a really good resource, so I am looking forward to diving into this journey. Dan

  10. Greetings all. I just wanted to do a shout-out to Bushton Manufacturing. Last weekend, I answered a Craigslist ad for a Hawk G4 26" scroll saw, about 1-hour and 45-minutes away from my home. I don't think the price was great, but it wasn't bad either, about 1/3 of a new one. I offered a slightly lower number, and we met in the middle. I drove out to pick up the saw from a very friendly guy who was selling it for his friend's widow. Well, he didn't have much information, but the saw looks like it was in really great condition. He said his friend was meticulous about maintaining and cleaning his machines, so I made sure it powered on, loaded it in my truck, and drove the 1:45 home. After getting it into my shop and futzing with it for a while, I discovered that the saw was A LOT more worn out than expected. The pitman arm was worn out by the lower blade arm, and rattled terribly. The table tilt was broken and had a hard time keeping the table dead flat as there was some minor play in it, and the upper blade holder was cracked at the roll pin, and basically held on with tape. So, the saw was not very usable, and really loud. The saw was also missing the upper arm hold-down lever and blade guard. Neither of which I was going to worry too much about. Well, since I restore antique woodworking machinery, I decided I was going to fix it myself. I called Bushton Manufacturing, and spoke to the very, very nice lady on the phone and gave her a list of parts I needed to make the machine functional again. Bracing myself for a huge number, she gave me the total of something like $24. In my disbelief, I had to ask her again, and it was true. So... I ordered the missing parts, and the counter-weight, in case that was worn out too, but the total was still under $60, shipped. Anyhow, I went ahead and ordered them. She said a couple of the parts had to be manufactured, so there would be a delay in shipping those parts to me. I asked her to just ship them in one box since I wanted to rebuild the saw in one sitting, and it would save them on shipping. Well, 6-days later (today), I get all of the parts i needed and wanted. So, I went down to the shop and went to rebuilding the saw. How such a great saw can be so simple is beyond me. I had the entire saw rebuilt in under an hour. and now, the sucker works as good as new. I made a snowflake on it, and I have to say, this is the best scroll saw I have ever used, and I own quite a few (7 of them for a boy's club, and two vintage machines I restored). Anyhow, I just wanted to give a shout-out (that's what it's still called, right?) to Bushton Manufacturing for their absolute top-notch customer service and their great products. Thanks for putting up with me, Dan

    My New work

I have been busy cutting and painting, I cut a good few days of painting out. Then I spend a few days of painting. If that makes since, I have a few more trucks to cut and paint then I want to start on the Cars from the CARS movie. I believe it was Scrappile who wanted to see a 66 Ford. I hope I did it justice.

    Red Solo Cup

Fun, useful project. I don't know if this is practiced world wide but here in Alabama it's common at a gathering to put your name on a plastic cup with a Sharpie so you can keep up with which cup is yours. Toby Keith has a song about it, "Red Solo Cup." My family usually makes up names. We're headed on a family vacation next week and my wife requested I make one of these. I added the text which is a line from the song. We don't usually have anything stronger than Dr. Pepper in ours.

    Excalibur

When I got my saw after enjoying the little Craftsman scroll saw, there were really only two machines to consider - Excalibur and Hegner (as well as a few Hegner look alike). I went back and forth, nearly memorized a Spielman book on the saws and decided on the EX I currently have. I reckon I would have been equally happy with the Hegner. I agree that sometimes something bad will, in the long run bring about good.Today there are a lot of choices for machines of high quality. One just has to research, join a forum such as this one, and pick peoples brains. Hopefully before and not after the purchase.

  16. Steve posted these patterns a couple weeks ago. Finally sat down at the saw yesterday and cut all 10 and then some. As you can see I stack cut these so I now have 30+ ornaments to paint and assemble. They were cut on my Pegas using mgt #3. I did cut one full size snowflake for the window, I duplicated the top layer so it is two sided. The other 10 I reduced to 50% so they are better sized for the tree. My wife wants a full size set for the house windows now so I guess I better get back to the saw.

    New Hawk has arrived

I ordered a BM-20 Hawk October 1st and I received it Friday November 12th. I was told it would be 6 to 8 weeks and it was. It was very well packaged. Setup only took about an 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I made a few cuts and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth cuts, and low vibration. I still need to learn all the new adjustments to fine tune.

    Trivet

I designed and cut this trivet for my wife's aunt who has cancer that will likely be terminal. I love this comforting verse from an old hymn, He Leadeth Me. I've probably sung it 1,000 times but only a couple of years ago recognized that this verse is referring to the 23rd Psalm. It's about 8" and cut in red oak.

    Excalibur

Sometimes there has to be bad things happen to open the door for better things to come in.. While I do agree that it's a shame that Excalibur quality declined.. but I think it's more a shame that more people buy without asking or reading reviews. If Excalibur wouldn't have had the issues they had a few years ago.. I'm doubting that the Seyco, Jet, King, and Pegas saws wouldn't have evolved.. Now there are more and better options than the Excalibur, even better options than the better made Excalibur's with the larger table of the seyco.. the better built Pegas etc. etc.

Ditto what Kevin Said. If it’s new Excalibur, it’s made in China. I bought a Pegas saw and love it! It’s is made in Taiwan not China.

Congratulations on the new saw! Ray The only thing you need to do with the Hawk legs is kick them out until the saw settles in. . I am so glad they went back to the billet aluminum machined parts. I love my G4 but was never crazy about the rough cast steel frame.

    Red Solo Cup

It is 2 short bread cookies with marshmallow cream between and covered in a glaze frosting. Available in Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana and an occasional off the wall special edition flavor. Very big in the southern USA. Not one of my favorites but well liked by most.

    Politics & SSV

Rules about politics and religious discussions are in the User Guidelines, which everybody agreed to when signing up for SSV. It's been there since 2009 when I launched the website. It applies site-wide. We've long established a place to talk about woodworking and chatting with our fellow scrollers, minus politics and religion. The truth is, we all have different viewpoints. A post will not change anybody's mind. But that post will quickly destroy friendships we tried so hard to foster. I've been running online communities since 1992 using BBSs and dialup modems on a 1200baud modem. I've seen this destroy more communities that I'd like to count. I worked hard to keep SSV running smoothly and without drama. I don't think it's too much to ask that we keep political discussions off SSV. If you want to ruin friendships and argue with strangers, Facebook is the place to be. If you want to talk about making sawdust and talk shop, SSV is the place to be. Thanks for understanding.

I would love to trade it for a 1966 Ford F100 with a 352 engine... good shape... I'd trade straight across it it was the right one.

  49. Hi Pete: Back when I was doing shows, I had these on my table, real small reindeers, 2" high, similar to what you are showing here. People would look at them, said they were cute and kept on walking I think I was asking $5 each - they did have a bow also on them, but didn't sell They were all thinking that these little guys were made in China or from the Dollar store Then, I brought one with me that was just cut and showed the people how to get to the reindeer, Once they were convinced that it was actually made by me on a saw, they literally flew off the table. Show and tell is one great way to get sales. Just thought I would share this little story. Fab4
