Xmas Tree complete ?
smitty0312 and 9 others reacted to John B for a topic
G'day all, The kids stuck their "baubles" on the tree today. I cut the circles and painted them white and the kids decorated them. They used hot melt glue, so I will have to place a screw in each one to stop them falling of. Would of used super glue but I reckon we would of ended up with a few nippers stuck to tree amongst the decos The local Men's shed made 14 trees from ply and gave one to each school to decorate and paint. May add a little tinsel, we'll see what the boss thinks.10 points -
Here are some photos of what I've been working on this past week. First photo has two paw print ornaments for the grandson and his friend along, a Home plaque and a Jeep wall hanging for my other grandson Second photo is a whale puzzle. Third is my most ambitious so far - a Harley-type Skull with pistons for the son-in-law's workshop.7 points

Steve posted these patterns a couple weeks ago. Finally sat down at the saw yesterday and cut all 10 and then some. As you can see I stack cut these so I now have 30+ ornaments to paint and assemble. They were cut on my Pegas using mgt #3. I did cut one full size snowflake for the window, I duplicated the top layer so it is two sided. The other 10 I reduced to 50% so they are better sized for the tree. My wife wants a full size set for the house windows now so I guess I better get back to the saw.2 points

LL Johnson Lumber
ChelCass and one other reacted to Woodmaster1 for a topic
I like ll Johnson's lumber. If your buying quantity no other place beats their price. I once ordered 850bdft of quartersawn red oak and 300bdft. of poplar and had it delivered and still saved money compared to a more local supplier.2 points -
That's SOOO true. Especially when you have "honey-do's" to get in the way. Like painting the interior of your home. Ugh!2 points

I cut that last winter and I think I have the same pattern attached to another board that I need to cut out this month. So many patterns....so little time. Jim2 points

Ray, I can not answer about the bellows.. unless it is an age issue or Germans may not know how to make good rubber... I do not know where Hawk originated,,, I think America... Whoops,, another reason for Americans to buy Hawk over Hegner I guess...1 point
-
Ha,,, "cheap plastic/rubber bellows is like $45". that is not cheap to me! But you could look at it this way, my Hegner is 11 years old,,, been rode hard and put away wet, but the bellow still looks fine... So if I get a few more year out of the bellows, say, 3, just to stay with even numbers....... 14 years (get it?, even numbers), that is only $3.21 a year. Now figure that with repairs on other cheaper saws that may not and probably will not last the long, with as much use, needing major repairs or replaced... I will keep my Hegner.. Hawk probably averages out about the same,, I do no know.. Really, to me the major differences are simple preferences.. The Hegner will not top feed.. the Hawk will. Maybe the Hawk table is bigger, I do not know. Maybe the Hawk table will tilt more in both directions than the Hegner, I do not know.... Both are work horses, both are great saws and for what I do scrolling, I would be happy with either, I think. I have never had the privilege of scrolling with a Hawk... I sure would like to.. The major things to me on my Hegner are, if I need help/customer service for my Hegner it will be there, if I need parts they well be there.. Maybe/maybe not so much on the current Hawk... but the seems to be improving..1 point

5000K is good. F18 tells me that the lights are sure bright enough, and then some. I usually try to shoot at F6-9 and adjust my lights to get that on my light meter at a point where the light is hitting the object being photographed. Most room lighting us almost always below F6, so none of it will have any effect on the photos taken. All of the light for the photo is then the result of the lights, which are controllable, and it's still easy to see your way around the room. You should be able to back your lights up several feet from the object and run a lower F-Stop number and get the same result without overheating the object and it's surroundings. Each time you double the distance between the light and object you will cut the light level 50%. It works the opposite way too. It's called the "Inverse square Law". Photographers do their magic when they follow this law of lighting. Many don't know the math, but understand the principle. My only remaining concern is that the light is spread evenly across the object with no center hot spot, typical of non photographic lights. A diffuser panel between the light and object would help eliminate this. A sheet of printer paper would work, if big enough and if it can be placed far enough in front of the light bulb so as not to catch fire, would work to spread the light. A piece of white bed sheet would work too, if it was new or nearly new white. If buying for this, the cheapest bedsheet you can find, will do a better job than the more expensive varieties. Make a frame to keep it flat and add a stand of some design to position it in front of the light bulb. The light center spot should spread and make the light into an even, soft, and surrounding light. Charley1 point

In 2015 I bought a EX 16 from my local Woodcraft store. I had it shipped to them for free and picked it up. I had an old Craftsman and it was like going from the stone age to the Jet (Excalibur) age. It has given me good service but I have done some few changes. I bought the Pegas clamps from Denny and they work great. The old ones just wear out. Steel thumb screws and aluminum housings. I mounted the lower thumb screw on the left so I can mount the blade with my right hand. I filled in the downdraft vent holes with apoxy because I top feed and was always going in the wrong holes and scratching the top. The top deck gets worn and found some white magnet sheet material (cheap) I cut to size and has been working very well. It's a black Excalibur General International unit. Not sure where it was made but it works well and keeps making saw dust.1 point

Roberta, there is an easy fix for the tension knob turning and losing tension. Wrap a rubber band around the threaded shaft that the knob attaches to. Yhen twist it a couple of times and stretch it down and hook it to one of the screws that are there on the right side. You'll have to replace it every once in a while but it keeps the tension knob from turning on it's own. I've had to do it to my "green" Canadian EX21.1 point

You might need to replace the pitman arm and pin I had that issue when I purchased my G4. Of course, both the pitman arm and pin were very worn out, and made my saw sound like it had a rod knock. I wonder if the pin walking out is an early sing of wear. Now that I have the new pitman arm and pins, it fits very tight. I had to use a clamp to seat it. I think that pitman arm and pin was only like $10. Not sure of the other pin you are referring to, but give them a call and they can get you the parts you need cheap. Replacing them is very easy too. Politics & SSV
new2woodwrk reacted to Foxfold for a topic
Must confess Jim, I'm a relative newbie, but I've joined and then left several other 'scrollsaw groups' as I personally found them unpalatable, however, this group was the first that I found on my scrollsaw journey and is now the only one I belong to.. People on here are the most helpful bunch you'll find anywhere on the planet. They've steered me through so much, what machine, what wood, how to, how not too.!! I'm tremendously indebted to this community. Very occasionally a 'squabble' rears it's head but Travis keeps us in check and then all runs smoothly again. JMO1 point -
New wall hook item
Mark SW reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
Great idea. I like the figures as it keeps with your brand. Really cool. Have you tested the hooks with a sport ribbon? I used to do ribbon racks for a number of sports and started by using hooks but switched to shaker pegs after first rack. Some one asked about Gymnastics and here is an example of a design I did. I showed the picture with and without ribbons from the user.1 point -

Excalibur vs. Jet?
John B reacted to Roberta Moreton for a topic
I love my Excalibur. I also did not want to mess with having the bottom clamp like the Jet Just me.1 point -
I have bought 3 used saws on C/L. I have the Dewalt, the EX21 and a Hegner 18" as shown in my signature below. I first started with the Dewalt because I knew nothing about the others. I love it as well as the EX. The Hegner is a different animal. I will learn to love it in time. Because the Dewalt and the EX are so similar in design I'll probably sell the Dewalt. I don't need 3 saws. Anyway, with all that said, and also being somewhat of a novice if I were you, I'd first do a lot of reading here on SSV and then try to find folks who have the different saws you are thinking of. Give them a try if possible. Right now, if I had to make a choice between my 3 saws, I'd keep the EX for sure. I love it. I'm probably going to upgrade the clamps with the new Pegas offering. I hope this doesn't confuse you. I'd for sure start watching Craigslist in your area. There are a ton of good used saws near me but I live in a very crowded area. Not sure how your area is. Good luck to you no matter what you go with. Just take your time. Don't jump into anything because it's truly a thing where each individual prefers a different saw.1 point
