Back at my saw.
Roberta Moreton and 5 others reacted to Foxfold for a topic
I haven't done any work for a while as I've been under a consultant with my lungs. Having scans, blood tests and biopsy. But the good news is I'm fine and can now go back to my workshop. Now lets see if I remember how to work a scrollsaw.6 points -
Been having a lot of fun with my scroll saw - here's most of the projects I've completed this week The first picture is of a pair of cute little animals - hedgehog and rhino; the second is a cutout ornament of my grandson's Bernese Mountain Dog, the third is a VW racer, and the last two are a "speed racer"! I was amazed at the woodgrain in this car. It was cut from a 2x4 - never knew they could have such great woodgrain patterns! Thanks for taking the time to look - as a beginner I can already see an improvement in my ability (as limited as it is )6 points

This is a Steve Good pattern. Made four sets. Three sets sold for $250 each. The fourth was gifted to my Mother- in law. All figures made from solid hardwoods including Aspen, Yellowheart, Purpleheart, Sapele Red Oak Walnut and Mahogany. The stable is laminated pine with an antique solution. The base is 3/8 Baltic Birch.4 points

After the first cutting, an 11x14 H. Botas Pattern called “Horse” a few weeks ago, I decided to find and convert a few other free images into horse scroll saw patterns. This group of Horse portraits is the result. All cuttings are done in 5/32” solid core Maple, Birch or Walnut ply. Backers are 1/4 BB ply either left natural or stained with Minwax Dark Walnut as appropriate. I used a few different Pegas blades, both MGT R and Spriral, of various sizes from #2/0 up to #3 to cut these patterns. All panels were finished with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. All panels set loose in 1 3/4” wide distressed Poplar Frames finished with Minwax Early American Poly/Stain. Horse – Botas – 11”x14” Cut panel Horse Stallion – 10”x10” Cut Panel mounted on a 12” x 12” Backer. Horse Running – 11”x14” Cut Panel Horse Proud – 12”x15” Cut Panel Horse Jumping – 11”x14” Cut Panel Horse Palls – 15”x12” Cut Panel Horses 3 – 14”x11” Cut Panel Comments and critiques are always welcomed.3 points

Framed and Finished

This is Jim Blume's "Americana 3" pattern. It is 1/4 inch Maple ply with 1/4 inch pine backing. It was cut using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. The front is stained with Minwax Natural and then coated with several layers of clear gloss spray with light sanding between each coat. The backer was simply painted a flat black. The frame is a pine 1 X board cut down and stained with Minwax Red Oak. I've had this finished for a couple weeks but finally finished the frame today. I plan to cut several more from Jim's Americana series and make a set. This was a lot of fun and I'm look forward to start on the others.3 points -

I can relate to all you say. My hubby has copd, I have fluid that's turned to jelly under my lung and it's displacing the lung. They think I've had a pneumonia at some point. However, it's hoped it will dissipate over time and will re-scan me in 3mths. But my lungs themselves have been given the all clear. I must admit to looking like 'Darth Vadar' when I'm in my workshop, I have a mask, ear defenders, an extraction fan on the outside wall, a vacuum, and a box fan.2 points -

Can you glue the cut cores together and get smaller snowmen? Offsprings? Both having fun with words and seeing if waste cutouts can be used. Thanks for the reply2 points

Not sure if you're joking, but I didn't want to ignore your question if you're serious. It's a compound cut, which means it's cut from one side of the wood, then turned 90 degrees and cut from another side. The insides and outsides fall away leaving this. Not the best explanation but it's a start.2 points

I have that gun. I would recommend getting the fine finish cup for it. I use Sherman Williams Pre catalyzed lacquer. Thin it about 50%. Been spraying with it for about 3 years and love it. I always leave lacquer in the gun...........soak the tip in thinner only when it needs it.2 points

I do use watercolor pencils a great deal. I seldom color the entire image though, but rather blend a little color here and there to give the idea. Lots of folks are equally good at doing their scroll saw projects, and something as simple as a little color can set you apart from the rest. There are many videos on U-Tube which show blending techniques and so on, but I basically played around on a few small items to come up with what worked for me.I start out really lightly and then add more over top if I want it darker. I use a soft artists brush with a slight amount of water to blend the colors, and also bought extra white pencils to use as a blending tool as well. You can always sand it off it you don't like the results. The pencils can be used on wet or dry materials, though I prefer starting on a dry surface with light pencil marks and blending it in toward the center. You can blend 2 or more colors and if you remember "where the shadows are and work dark to light, you can further enhance your projects. Once completed, I do seal the entire project to set the colors, with any clear matt finish spray or water-based matt or satin varnish. I have had folks tell me that over many years, the colors have not faded, so I must be doing something right. Here are a few examples of what I do. I am sure with a little practice you can do as well but probably better, Good luck and enjoy.2 points

Successful Scroll Sawing with the Boys

I agree Paul. My woodshop teacher was a great man by the name of Jack Cohen. He's about the only teacher that I can remember. I can still see him standing up on top of one of the woodbenches and demonstrating how to use a router. When they discontinued shop classes they stopped many people from entering into the trades and now we have a shortage of people who know how to fix stuff. I'd love to see Trade Schools make a come back. Of course, they'll have to hire people like us to teach them how to teach the kids.2 points -

I started making these key/leash racks and I've been using rattle can spray finish (image below) but I'm ready to upgrade and some folks recommended the Titan sprayer (image below). Well it just went on sale for $200 and I think I'll jump at that. Now my question is, what would you recommend I use in it? What type of finish? Thanks for your suggestions and assistance.1 point

I had a request for a cowboy boot ornament pattern. I have the one shown from Sue Mey but they don't like the hat in it. I could easily remove the hat but then I think it'd look pretty goofy with the one booth way off to the side with nothing on the other side, LOL Thanks for any leads on a pattern.1 point

I recently heard about something called watercolor crayons, and looked at a video talking about them. All the videos showed them being used on paper. I decided to give them a try on a wood project. I cut this out, and used 100% watercolor crayons on it Now I need you to tell me if you like the effect or not. Also, if you like the piece....lol1 point -

Spray finish help...
ChelCass reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
With water based poly you need to add an extra step. Wipe down the piece to be sprayed let dry then sand very lightly to remove the raised wood fibers. Doesn't take long and I use 400 for this. Lacquer you need great ventilation and a proper mask for protection. Both dry fairly fast. Both should be llightly sanded between coats for that smooth finish. Let us know what you decide.1 point -

Glad you are back and can relate to lung problems, I have COPD so I mask up always, have a fan with a furnace filter tied onto it at the back of the scrollsaw to draw the dust away from me and a vacuumn to draw the dust from under the table as well as a shop air cleaner and all other tools have dust collection capabilities other wise I would be a sick puppy with nothing to do but sit, watch tv and feel sorry for myself1 point -
Very nice work. Toy cars from 2 x 4's are fun. Design anyway you want! About a month from now you will see it on the road! Freeform cutting works well.1 point

Great thing to do - thank you! When I was subbing at the elementary school I worked with a number of "difficult" kids. I had a room where I brought several guitars and amps. When kids were good I would allow them to play the guitars and show them some basic chords. The look of achievement on their faces was well worth the effort. There were several little guys that really took to it. At the end of the year, after contacting their parents, I let them pick out a guitar and amp to keep - they were so happy! The next fall I ran into one of them and asked if he was still playing it. He told me that he was now writing his own music!! You can never tell when something you do with kids will change their (and your) life! Thanks again for taking time with the kids!1 point

Cutting ornaments with Baltic Birch

Not all painters tape is blue. They make painters tape for delicate surfaces. It is typically a pinkish color.1 point
