    Serving tray

Tray made out of cherry and finished with rattle can lacquer. First time using lacquer. I like the finish but the fumes really got to me.

    A Lot of Work Indian

This one took me a while. I had a bunch of different small projects going on and have been working on my Side by Side. Now to build some frames for a few projects.

  4. Got the large version cut in one day, took several to sand, finish, and assemble. Sanded the gears a little bit more than the two spacers, so they sit a very small fraction of an inch lower than the spacers, giving them more freedom to spin. That made them a LOT easier to move.

I get dizzy using magnifiers so I put on a pair of shop bought magnifying reading glasses and that does me fine.

Here are some more pics. I used Pegas #5 MG blades. It’s a Wildwood pattern I bought probably 20 years ago and the wood is 5/8 thick. The bottom photo is a full sized 3/4 walnut one I made years ago but it’s so heavy. I reduced the pattern size to 80% and reduced the thickness to 5/8 on the cherry one. It’s not near as heavy. Sorry about the pictures my photo skills are lacking.

G'day Chuck. I think you did a pretty good job on that. I don't know how much cutting you have done. I'm not going to critique colours etc as that is a personal taste. Staining the fretwork is difficult because of stains tendency to darken at edges (Especially with ply) and getting the stain into all of the cut outs evenly can be a real challenge. I understand a lot people don't like sanding and finishing and do tend to rush these processes. The backer has machine marks very visible running horizontally. Take you time and sand with the grain using a variety of grits of paper until all machine marks have disappeared. Note: Be careful with ply as the top ply can vary in thickness depending upon the type and sanding through it will ruin the job. Keep on keeping on. You are cutting one of the master pattern makers works.

Hello Chuck. First, to comment on what Frank saw as being unfinished areas in the cut piece, I believe that is actually glue that hasn't dried completely. If I have glue that squeezes out between the cuts, I'll let the glue almost set and then use a small pick or probe to scrape it out. It usually comes out pretty easily if it sets up a little while. If you try to get it out to soon, the glue is soft and just spreads. If you leave it alone it usually dries clear but will be very glossy which can sometimes clash with your finish project. I love the pattern and you did great on the cutting. I do see some "fuzzies" which is inevitable. I usually tackle mine with needle files or a strip of sandpaper. On my last couple projects I have taken the advice of some of the forum members and tried burning them off with a torch. This worked great as long as you don't leave the torch in one spot long enough to cause scorching to your piece. I've also found if I'm getting a lot of fuzzies when I'm cutting, the blade is probably dull and needs to be changed. Understand that I certainly don't have the experience to critique someone else's work. I'm just passing along what I've experienced and how I corrected it.

I don't know the brand, but mine looks exctly like the HF one in the link above. Howver, mine is LED and does not generate any heat. Also, mine is a 5X lens and I fine it works great for me. Even though, under the 5X magnifier, my blade control may look ragged, to the naked eye, the cut line is very smooth.

When I scrolled, I had one. Would strongly recommend mounting it from the ceiling. It also magnifies the tiniest vibration.

Interesting piece. Nice cutting except for around the his right cheek. Maybe the photo, but something does not look correct. You asked, so the following are my thoughts, for whatever they may be worth to you. I love to add color to my work also. However, in this case I'm not overly enthused with your coloring efforts. The background staining is not saturated enough alowing the grain and backer board color to show through. In some cases this might be nice but in this case it looks unfinished. I can also plainly see white spots of the backer showing through the cutting or it may be the unstained edge cuts. Why they are there should be addressed and corrected. When adding color, making sure all the cut edges are stained is a stiff PITA. I know, been there done that. The yellowish stain you used on the cut panel is OK(maybe?), but the orange in the fire just does not work as I think what you were looking for.. AND, AND, the pinkish stain on the frame...no, nope, not at all, does not work. A frame should complement and enhance the work, not overpower and distract from it. AND, the top and bottom of the frame is toooo close to the cut panel. Portaits need to be framed twice, once on the panel itself and then with a pysical frame around the panel providing ballance and symetry to the entire piece. In this case you are squashing the image. And, the width of frame rails and stiles just dont look correct to me, but that is a very personal opinion. Look at commercial frames to get an Idea what width looks the best to you. Also, your frame making needs improvement. The right bottom corner looks bad, but I'm realizing it may be how the photo is cropped. Photos can make a piece look better then in person, and can also make it look much worse. Let me apologise in advance if my thoughts are not to your liking. I find in this forum members tend to only offer positive comments to work posted even when not really deserving. I've seen a number of you previous posts and I know you can do a much better job if that is what you really want and strive for.

I have one made by Offline with really good glass lens. It has less distortion than the cheaper ones and came with both a 3x and 5x lens. I use the 3x almost exclusively.

  15. I cut these 7 Santas to give away as Xmas presents to friends and family. They were given on Thanks Giving so they could be hung for the month of December. I also cut 30 of the S. Good 2021 Ornaments. Pic only shows the first 20. Some have been given already and some will be given with our annual cookie exchange amoungs the neighbors on Christmass Eve Eve. I also cut this S Good "Santahouse" for a present to ourselves to hang on the front of our home.

  17. My grandson, Kyler, is always trying to get into our bank. He even pulled a shelf down on himself trying to get to it. He is okay. Well, I decided to make him one for his upcoming birthday (OK, not Christmas but close enough). I also put a little money in it. Now, do I give him the combo or let him try all 1000 combinations? Hmmm.

    Your wings were ready.

So I got an airbrush, so I can do the fades for this. Still learning a good mix for craft paint to not run.. but I think it came out pretty good. So it's about 10x12 from 3/16" maple. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades and a modified Shelia Landry Design. Her original design does not come with the paw prints.

Not to hijact the thread, but I'm curious. I had seen in some posts with photos of members shops, someone had a mag lamp that was much larger that these ring type lamps and rectangular. I would guess the mag glass was like 6"x8" or maybe even bigger. Not sure if it actally was a lamp also. My biggest objection to my mag/lamp is the size of the viewing glass. Anyone know about physically larger mag lamps?

  25. Real nice job on those ,John. Wondering what you would alter on the pattern. I too would love to cut some of these for some pretty little nieces who think uncle Ricky is friends with Santa himself. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you John, and to all the the forum family..... stay safe and pound a few down.

Menards doesn't have the florescent one that I use anymore.. I just looked and they now only offer a LED one.. I put LED tubes in mine once the Florescent went bad. I like the idea of having the flip up lens cover.. If you have a window in your shop be sure the magnifier isn't going to catch any of the sun. I came into my shop after lunch one day to finish a project I had been working on.. my saw sits by a window and the sun was catching the light and the focal point of a bean was hitting thankfully just my saw table but it was so hot I couldn't touch the table.. had I had my wood project setting up there it'd probably been on fire.. I now just had a old box blocking the window.. the flip lens cover would be nice though..so long as you get into habit to use it when not in the shop.. LOL Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree mostly with Frank. Also I find the grain pattern on the backer in the lower right distracting. It draws the eye away from the main part. I do like the irregularity of the backboard staining. Looking forward to your next project.

Haven't really cut much for Christmas this year, in past years I've had a garage full of gifts I scrolled. Owl/Wonderwoman/Superman trivets, multi-layer dragon scene, and Superman/Wonderwoman pics.

  49. Hello everyone - Mike here. I'm a new forum member here from S.E. Michigan. New to scroll sawing as well. I've got an old Dremel Moto-shop 571-5 that I have been playing with the last couple of weeks. Not the best results - not sure if it's me or the machine. Even with a new blade it basically makes a lot of noise and is slow (I'm cutting about 1/2" plywood). I'm thinking about getting a different machine. I've been looking at an introductory machine like the Wen (about $130). I saw an older Hegner Multimax 18 on Craigslist for $275 (with a ton of new blades included!) Any recommendation or comments would really be appreciated!!
