Well this is a add on gift.. It is more of name tag / gift. I wanted to play with a compound cut. I have not tried this because of lettering. So this name tag shows 2 cellos on one side and grand niece's name on other side. She plays a cello but is getting a higher tech electric cello for a gift. Electric cello is better for college students. I used myrtle wood but thought it needed a slight stain. I used a slight orange dye over the stained letters and cello only. The rest had no orange dye. Font is "Playbill". My theme was going toward a western look.3 points

Number 2 of Jim's Americana Series
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
This is my second from Jim Blume's Americana series and I plan to cut at least one more. Like the first which was a wagon wheel, this is cut from 1/4 Maple ply stained natural with multi coats of spray clear gloss sanded between each coat. The back is 1/4 Pine. The frame is cut from a 1X Pine board that I actually tried out my new router for the first time. The frame is stained with and antique oak. I'm posting two pics. One of the single finished project and another with both I have cut. I feel they complement each other.2 points -

I have sprayed Danish Oil straight from the can with no issues. Save the mineral spirits to clean the air brush.1 point -

Air Brush
barb.j.enders reacted to BadBob for a topic
You should be able to spray anything. Tip size is important with acrylic paint due to the larger pigment size. Construction of the airbrush can be a problem when spraying lacquer. Lacquer thinner will eat the seals in some of the Chinese airbrushes.1 point -

Glad you were able to get back to the shop. I can't imagine going that long. I went nuts and I only missed using the shop for six weeks after hand surgery.1 point -
Great job. The whole project is nice.1 point

I just got an airbrush for Christmas. Can I spray Tung Oil or Watco Danish oil if they are thinned with mineral spirits?1 point -
Magnifique Rodney, both are beautiful, you haven't two left hands like me. (It's a French expression that says you're skillful, you probably have the same expressions.)1 point

Beautiful job. I have made a number of Sheila Landry plaques and have one in process as we speak. Her website is a great resource. For what it is worth - I make it a habit to pick areas on the back of the plaque and matching areas on the backer board for gluing that will not show through the cuts. (Along the sides and between lines of text) I apply masking tape to these "glue islands" to keep them clear of paint and finishing material. The final step for me is to mate the backerboard to the plaque by applying glue to these areas. This method provides the best chance that the coatings will not weaken the glue joints. Since plywood is more stable than the hardwood used for the plaque it gives some assurance the glue joints will not fail as humidity acts on the piece over the years. I also put 2 brass screws in that act as a mechanical backup. Again, first rate job!!!1 point -
Sven, Olaf, and Inga
danny reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
These are the names of three (Steve Good designed) gnomes. I made Sven and Olaf last year and they are featured in the Yule display on the top shelf of the large display cabinet at the end of our hall: Most of the (few) visitors to our home this season have noticed and admired Sven and Olaf. This encouraged me to make their sister, Inga. Here is a photo of the three of them: I also decided to make additional sets of the three of them as gifts for our visitors who were most enthusiastic about the two gomes that they saw in our display.1 point -
Latest Cuttings

Great looking projects! Delta Ceramcoat and Apple Barrel are both acrylic paints sold at many places like Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. and they have a bright silver and a metallic silver. They are cheap too! God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.. I may try it with just the 1/8 BB ply I have and see how it goes.. Honestly it doesn't need to be wood I suppose since I planned on painting it. I'm just not sure what's out there that's reasonably priced.. Edit to add: I made these ornaments on my laser... and would likely cut the backer on the laser too. The original design was for a large wall hanging but I resized these to be about 4- 3/4 tall.. The design also had a slightly larger backer.. I didn't intend to make the backers but the detail is so small that they're hard to see good without a contrasting color on the back.. So that is why I was wanting the thin ply to use as a backer and paint it.. I may scrap the whole idea and just make them the wall hangings that they was designed to be.. I just like to "try" to make things different than the original design.. I purchased a bundle pack of these themed crosses ( about 75 different designs ) that was designed for laser / cnc.. and just playing.. I think most of these could be scroll sawn as well.. I know they could with slight modifications.. Not sure they could be this small sized though..1 point
