  1. Two days of cutting produced this newest wood art piece. I'm pretty happy with this one. Pattern by me. Cut entirely with Flying Dutchman 2/0 spiral blades.

  2. Never get as much done around Christmas time as I'd like to. I did get these done for a family gift exchange. I picked the patterns up on Etsy, I believe that they're for silhouette/cricut. Cut from 1/2" sassafras or 1/4" red oak, each about 4" long.

    Picket Fence Welcome

I took a short break from the normal picture type projects and completed this at the request of my niece. This is a Steve Good pattern. I was wanting cedar planks but the only thing Lowe's had at the time was pine. They were very rough cut so I sanded them to knock off the rough edges and saturated them with Thompson water seal. The letters are cut with Pegas #3 MGT from 3/4 pine ply since they were going to be painted. The bell topper is cut from 3/4 pine and painted also. I also cut the bell topper with the #3 Pegas MGT. The Valentines topper is a Steve Good pattern I modified. It is cut from 1/4 pine ply using Pegas #1 MGT. To switch out the toppers, I placed a rare earth magnet in the top of the picket and attached a 1 X 1 metal plate on the back of each topper. I also have a gnome for New Years but it is drying after gluing. I have patterns for most other American holidays that should also work as toppers. Hope you like!

    I Deliver

Well, I don't, but our Postal worker does. This pattern was posted on a forum, and I had to make one for our Postal worker. The pattern is by Steve Good listed as "I Deliver". I used 1/2" Hard Maple for the upright and 3/4" Red Oak for the base. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R MGT blades for the interior cuts and #3R MGT blades for the perimeter and veining. The finish is sanding sealer and two coats spray Lacquer Clear Satin with sanding between coats. Comments welcome.

    Bird in Bush

I found this free stencil pattern on-line. I converted it into a scroll saw pattern and sized it to fit a 5/32” x 10” x 11” Solid Core Maple cut panel that was affixed to a hand painted ¼” x 12” x 13” BB ply backer. All cutting completed with Pegas #2/0 Spiral blades The colored portion of the backer was painted with Artist Acrylic paints while the 1” wide perimeter mat area of the backer was painted rattle can spray Chocolate Brown for a strong contrast with the natural Maple panel. As usual, I protected the finished panel with multiple coats of Deft Clear Spray Gloss Lacquer. Once again, the panel is set loose in a 1 3/4” wide Poplar Frame stained with Minwax Honey Maple and protected with multiple coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Wipe on Poly. I plan to remake the frame for this piece as I am unhappy with the corner miter joints. Comments and Critique welcome.

  6. My son and grandson are restoring an old Chevy pickup completely off the frame, everything new except the body (which has work on it too). I took a picture of the truck before it was taken apart and Photoshoped it into a pattern. The truck is in 1/4" maple resawn from a tree I cut down behind the house a few years ago. The frame is left over white oak from when we put in our wood floors. I dyed the frame black for the truck to stand out. This was my gift to my Grandson for Christmas.

    H Botas Jesus Portrait

Loved this pattern and wanted a piece of wood with some character to cut it on. Looked through all my bits and pieces and found this piece of oak with a live edge. It's about 5" X 7". I know some don't like this much coloration on a portrait and I get it. Personally I see it more as the piece as a whole coming together to make an art piece. Kind of like how Mt. Rushmore might have been a bit more polished cut from a square piece of granite, but wouldn't have been nearly as majestic. No right and wrong, just different views. Happy New Year everyone! H Botas pattern available here. https://www.etsy.com/listing/869966491/jesus?click_key=394d54e4281a09de4f5f2b794a437927d62c7156%3A869966491&click_sum=b00911b6&ref=shop_home_recs_1

    Cats

After first cutting, a C. Dearing Cat Pattern, I also found and converted a few other free Cat images into scroll saw patterns. This group of Cat portraits is the result. All cuttings are done in 5/32” solid core Maple ply. Backers are hand painted 1/4 BB ply. I used Pegas #2/0 and #0 Spiral blades to cut the patterns. All panels were hand painted with Artist Acrylic’s and finished with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. All panels set loose in 1 3/4” wide Poplar frames that were finished with multiple coats of Black Lacquer. Grey Black Cat - 9” x14” Black and White Cat – 9” x 14” Orange Cat - C. Dearing – 8” x 14” Comments and Critique welcome.

  10. I needed some quick and simple ornaments for an outdoor tree. Something that I didn't have much time invested in if/when they get destroyed by being outside. We finally got our outdoor fireplace finished on our back porch and the wife put a tree next to it. So that's where the ornaments come into play. The Santa's I've seen here on this site a couple of times and thought that I would also make us a set for the outdoor tree. My wife did the painting. Only one of them have the white balls on the hat's in the picture,,, the cats got to the rest of them! LOL The Merry Christmas pieces hanging on the fireplace were cut from a piece of branch from my Sycamore tree, my wife did the lettering on her Cricut.

  12. Well this is a add on gift.. It is more of name tag / gift. I wanted to play with a compound cut. I have not tried this because of lettering. So this name tag shows 2 cellos on one side and grand niece's name on other side. She plays a cello but is getting a higher tech electric cello for a gift. Electric cello is better for college students. I used myrtle wood but thought it needed a slight stain. I used a slight orange dye over the stained letters and cello only. The rest had no orange dye. Font is "Playbill". My theme was going toward a western look.

  13. I'm finally getting back into my woodshop and making something again. Health issues had just about completely put an end to my woodworking two years ago. I lost almost total use of my right leg, and none of the doctors could figure out what was wrong with me. Then last January a mild, but large bruise formed on and around my right knee, and the pain started going away. By about April I was able to put weight on it, but then it took me until about June to walk on it without cane or crutches. The bruise gradually went away along with the pain. I still have some balance problems, but I'm walking again. Just not nearly as well as before all this. I started going back out to the shop in the Fall, but at first I just stayed an hour or so, looking around, and then went back to the house. My son was doing the required maintenance for me when something absolutely needed to be done, but his idea of putting tools and supplies back when finished using them is in a pile just inside the shop door. I still have a significant pile to put away, but I was eager to see if I could make reindeer again. This one is the first in almost 2 years. I made 7 total Wednesday afternoon of the two larger sizes that I make. This is Mrs. Rudolf, slightly smaller than Rudy, the largest, who is almost 4" tall. She is about 3 1/4" tall. The next size down from the Mrs. is Trudy the teen daughter and then the smallest is ear ring size at about 7/8" tall and I call him Rudy Jr. I named the sizes years ago as a way of keeping track of the quantities and sizes that I was making. I've actually made smaller, at about 1/2" tall, but the average success rate of about 4 good in 10 made me quit. I've been making reindeer every year since 2004, except for these last 2 years. Well, with these, this year now isn't a total bust, so only one year, last year, without making any. Every Christmas Season I've just been making and then giving them away to any woman who helps me in some way during the Christmas Season. Every sales clerk, waitress, nurse, etc. gets one if they want it. For some strange reason, the women and teen girls seem to love these things. Most men are insulted if offered one, but I do give them away to woodworkers who want them. As I wish the women a "Very Merry Christmas" at the completion of my business with them, I hold my hand out palm down with a reindeer in it, then drop it in their hand when they reach out. Their excitement makes it worth doing. I've been hugged and even kissed on the cheek, but the smile Is all I'm after, and the chance to improve the "Christmas Spirit" in them. I lost exact count, but it's somewhere around 15,000 total reindeer that I've made since starting this. Reindeer are not the only thing that I make, but it usually keeps me busy from September on, when I'm in the shop and not working on a larger or more pressing project. I took this photo immediately after cutting her out. No eyes or red nose yet, Not even de-fuzzed yet. The eyes and nose are put on with black and red marking pens after de-fuzzing. Then a coat of clear lacquer. These were completed yesterday, before we went shopping, and one has already been given away. I've been avoiding it as much as possible this year, but Suzanne wants to go to the big mall, and traffic is very likely to be a mess around there. She doesn't handle driving in heavy traffic well any more. I don't either, but she thinks I do better than her, but we are very likely to make this venture to the Concord Mills Mall today, so I doubt I'll be making any more reindeer before Christmas this year. Hopefully, I'll be able to get started early and make a bunch of them before the Christmas Season next year. For those interested, that's the clamp that I used to hold the pieces of the reindeer blank together while I'm cutting it, and most 3D patterns, that the reindeer is sitting next to. It's about 6" long and made from 12 mm Baltic Birch plywood about 1" wide, two 6" long pieces of #8-32 stainless steel all thread, four hex nuts, two #8-32 wing nuts, six #8 flat washers. Only the all thread needs to be stainless. I use the stainless steel all thread because the mild steel version are too soft and stretch easily with many repeated uses. I don't have that trouble with the stainless all thread. Charley Attachments First 2021 Reindeer IMG_20211221_161725.jpg 78.8 KB · Views: 15

    Bird in Bush

This one was very challenging as the cuts were so close to each other. I use additional copies of the printed pattern to make rough painting stencils, but it is still not easy getting the colors in the correct locations. I also play with shading of the larger areas to get different colors in different areas without worring where the exact cut lines are. Thanks for the kind words.

Great job all around, Guaranteed you have more patience than I to do all those colors underneath. But the results are certainly worth the effort.

  31. Her you go DakOta52. I did both the patterns. I'm going to do the cropped version on a piece of live edge cherry, and only have 12" in width to work with. As to changing the color on Inkscape, I believe the problem was that the pattern was in gray. I just tried it and had to fist changed the pattern to black and then when I loaded it on Inkscape, I could change it to red. This computer and technology stuff keeps me realizing why I need my grandchildren to help me do things with my phone.

  35. My 28 year old granddaughter LOVES Harry Potter. We have read all the books, seen all the movies, even went to the bookstore openings for the newest book! Last week, she asked if I make wizard wands. Of course I do. I’ll see her tomorrow. The wood is pecan and walnut.
