Graham Greene and Kevin Costner as Kicking Bird and John Dunbar from Dances With Wolves. One of my favorite movies and one of the most beautiful scenic movies I've seen. Can't believe it's almost 32 years old. 1/2" Red Oak with a light stain, about 9" by 11" cut with FDUR#1. Not my pattern, I bought it on Etsy.9 points

Hi All this is two projects one is one of my first one that I can say I was really starting to get into the hobby. The other one is peace on harder and thicker wood I was lucky to get. Did it over the holiday was worried my machine would not take it as it was my first peace of hard wood. It was a champ was worried for nothing. The first one I used old X ray film and carben paper to put it on wood and drew the pattern on paper by hand. Then came the computer in our lives with the internet and all ye ha then the fun really began. Barbara8 points

Been working slowly but steadily on my cutting skills. My new Delta came in and it makes a world of difference in both quality of cuts and quantity when the blades are pinless. Here are a couple new projects that I have been working The first photo show some Tiny cars and small animals. The second has a couple of cars that based on the Aeroflow designs of the 30s and 40's More to come..... and thanks for letting me show off my improving talents (I hope)8 points -

I like to sit while I scroll. My Hegner is on a tall factory stand and that needs a "Draftsman" type stool to sit at. I looked at getting the Hegner short stand from Advanced but thought the cost was too much (235.00 plus shipping)- more than I paid for the saw. I am thinking about just cutting the tall stand down to chair height. Any pros and cons from the experts?2 points

I normally prepare my stock for cutting with Walmart "Duck" self adhesive shelf paper, then comes the pattern printed on full-page adhesive labels. Finally apply 2" package tape over the pattern. This does a good job of minimizing the tendency for the pattern to delaminate and lift in those small sections. Unfortunately the clear package tape gets slippery with the fine sawdust that is missed by the dust collection system. I soon find myself pressing down way too hard to move and hold the workpiece. This brings on so-called "scroller's palsy" I have found a trick that helps. I apply double-stick tape (aka carpet tape, seam tape or golf grip-tape) to the back of used sand paper and cut these into 3/4" x 1" squares. I then remove the protective paper to reveal the sticky surface. I stick these in strategic spots on the surface of the work piece (see picture). I have found this allows me to work comfortably with very light finger pressure to the board. It has cut down fatigue, increased accuracy moving the work piece and no "scroller palsied" fingers. NOTE: If this is simply restating someone else's earlier post I will claim "Senior Moment clepto status". With my 74th birthday now in the rearview mirror I am entitled!!!!!2 points

Nice work, Barbara! As far as cutting hardwood goes, the only difference is the speed of the cut and the number of blade changes (due to dulling). I cut the pictured piece out of Jatoba wood (called Brazilian cherry in the US). It is extremely hard and dense (and isn't even remotely related to cherry). Jatoba makes hickory seem soft by comparison.2 points

A few new ones I finished up and finally took some photo's of them. The Cheetah is by Russ Beard, the hawk is one by Ian Thorley, the crow is by Kenny Hopkins and the LA Kings helmet is by Jeffery Flick. Thanks to all you pattern designers for letting me have so much fun. The Cheetah, LA Kings and Crow are done in 1/8 A-4 oak plywood. The hawk is done in 1/2 inch oak strips that I glued up to make a blank for cutting. All work done with flat blades from a bunch of different manufacturers. All cut on a King Canada 20 inch saw.1 point

I had his pattern for quite some time. My dad bought me a book on scroll saw work back in the early 90's. I finally got around to doing it. It is for 3/4" wood. I finished it with 321 and I had mirror and glass cut for it in case my wife and I ever take another picture-it's been a while. It only cost $10 for the mirror and glass. It's 16x12.1 point

Yeah still getting orders for Christmas ornaments. This one the customer sent me a clip art image of a BMX bike rider and asked if I could make an ornament. I thought it might be cool to put the image into a bike sprocket shape so this is how that came out. Cut from 1/8 BBply with a #3 Pegas blade. These measure about 3.75 inch diameter.1 point

I could do that. My Excalibur sits on the one I made and I am very happy with it. Call me cheap and lazy, but the Hegner already has a good stand, and I thought shortening it would be perfect for it as my second saw. And I already have enough chairs that I am happy with, too. I was hoping someone here, had a good reason to cut the legs down or tell me that's a bad idea..........1 point

Lumber Prices Going Back Up!

Not surprising the way things have been going. Been holding off for BB but think I'll just bite the bullet now and continue to watch things.1 point -
I've never cared for the magnifiers that attach to the saw, bench, or other, but do use magnification when scrolling small things. I use a 3X or 5X magnifier that is attached to a head band, so it is in line with and moves with my eyes and head. I have several versions now. My lights are LED gooseneck and mounted on both sides of the upper arm of my DeWalt Scroll Saw. I position each high enough not to interfere with my hand movements, and slightly forward of the blade, aimed down at roughly 45 deg. so there are no significant shadows around the blade and cutting point to distract me from cutting where I want to. Blade shadows or flickering shadows from the upper blade grip getting in the way of the light can really affect how well your eyes see the cutting point. Eliminating these shadows makes for much higher cutting accuracy and less eye strain. If you cut for hours at a time, like I do, you won't be near as tired at the end of a long cutting session. Have you tried finger cots, the little rubber thingees that fit on the end of your fingers? They also do a great job of holding things. Tom1 point

I have a Hegner and Pegas. I have the Pegas at chair height. The Hegner Is on the high stock stand. I use the same stool at both of them. Bought it about a month ago and love it. https://www.amazon.com/Antlu-Rolling-Drafting-Adjustable-Hydraulic/dp/B07F8NXBXD?pd_rd_w=TyDJb&pf_rd_p=5bc65336-a8b0-4888-9e70-4d4ce2f6bd59&pf_rd_r=3YHZDCYZAP7AD723H6W0&pd_rd_r=069a695e-76d8-4d8e-8bd4-8cb3e9fbc0d3&pd_rd_wg=HB28x&pd_rd_i=B07F8NXBXD&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_rp_1_i1 point

Wood jumping question
OCtoolguy reacted to Juan Rodriguez for a topic
Any information/experience about PS Wood scroll saw? I am considering purchasing a scroll saw and I like what I have seen about the saw. Thanks!1 point -
Yes great movie. Good scrollsaw project. The wood brings out the wild west feel. Maybe add a teepee (tipi) in the background. I tried an experiment by listening to the book then watching the movie. The scenes of rolling hills and buffalo was on my bed room ceiling as i listened to the book at night. The next week I saw the movie and the same rolling hills and buffalo scene as on the screen. The director and producer did a great job at holding the scenes to the book. But the ending was different.1 point

Commission Work – Opinions needed-UPDATED
snikolaev28 reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I was commissioned to make this pair of Chinese Dragons panels. The client chose this Dragon from a group of different Dragons I provided. The patterns were found on-line and had to be only slightly modified to make it scrollable. The original had the “ribs” (for lack of a better word) bridging to the opposite side making a multitude of dropouts. The cut panels are 1/8” x 20” x 30” BB ply mounted on a painted black 1/4" x 20” x 30” BB Ply Backer. The cut panels were stack cut to make mirror images with good side up. Shelf liner was applied to both sides to minimize possible tear out. All cutting was completed with Pegas #1 spiral blades. A number of blades broke, mostly because it was difficult to thread the blade from below without kinking the blade. Keeping the panel flat while cutting was difficult, especially so after some of the larger areas were cut out. Used a lot of blue tape to hold cutouts in place to help keep the panel somewhat rigid while cutting. Yes, the little piece in the Dragon’s nose had to be glued back in after the panel was affixed to the backer. The 20” x 30” BB ply panels were special ordered from Ocooch Hardwoods. I did not find the prices to be too unreasonable for this special order. They responded to my request quickly and the order was received within just a few days. Great service. Now here is where I need some help and opinions. I need to make frames for these panels and cannot decide what width rail/stile I should use. I typically use 1 3/4" wide, but not sure if that will look the best for these panels. Often large frames are narrow (3/4”) or, like large paintings, use a much wider (2 1/2” +) that may be more appropriate. Please provide you opinion on what size I might use and tell me why. You might want to let me know what color the frame should be also. Thanks for you help. EDIT 12/22/21 I made the frames from 1"wide x 3/4" thick Poplar. I think the 1" frame width works well for these Chinese Dragon mirror image panels. I did a significant amoiunt of hand sanding to obtain a very smooth surface. I then applied two coats of a Rustolium Black Primer sanding between coats, again to a very smooth finish after which I applied multiple coats of Rustoleum Black Lacquer. Just as I was finishing the final coat, the nozzle on the spray can stuck in the open (spraying) position and made a mess, but fortunately not on the frames. After drying almost 24 hours, I found there was some areas of blush. Two light coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer did a nice job of getting a bright uniform finish. This commission project was difficult in many respects, but I feel it came out fairly well and am hoping the clients are happy. I'm not sure I would want to tackle a large panel project like this again. Thanks again to all that offered comments and advice. When appropriate and a black frame is needed, I think I will be using Black Lacquer again.1 point -
Number 2 of Jim's Americana Series
Phantom Scroller reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
This is my second from Jim Blume's Americana series and I plan to cut at least one more. Like the first which was a wagon wheel, this is cut from 1/4 Maple ply stained natural with multi coats of spray clear gloss sanded between each coat. The back is 1/4 Pine. The frame is cut from a 1X Pine board that I actually tried out my new router for the first time. The frame is stained with and antique oak. I'm posting two pics. One of the single finished project and another with both I have cut. I feel they complement each other.1 point -
Cats
Alexander Fadeev reacted to FrankEV for a topic
After first cutting, a C. Dearing Cat Pattern, I also found and converted a few other free Cat images into scroll saw patterns. This group of Cat portraits is the result. All cuttings are done in 5/32” solid core Maple ply. Backers are hand painted 1/4 BB ply. I used Pegas #2/0 and #0 Spiral blades to cut the patterns. All panels were hand painted with Artist Acrylic’s and finished with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. All panels set loose in 1 3/4” wide Poplar frames that were finished with multiple coats of Black Lacquer. Grey Black Cat - 9” x14” Black and White Cat – 9” x 14” Orange Cat - C. Dearing – 8” x 14” Comments and Critique welcome.1 point -

Lumber Prices Going Back Up!
scrollingforsanity reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I haven't been to the lumber store in over a year I think.. I still have enough to probably get me through most of this year since I have picked up a lot of cut offs etc. from my brothers mill. I'll likely need some BBply by early summer though. My local news did a report saying the prices are heading back up due to covid.. and short supply etc.0 points
