I have not been sitting on my duff doing nothing all of December. I made a lot of Christmas gifts for the family but did not take many photos of them. Here are a few items I did but forgot to post. Pretty much the rest of them never got a photo so I am unable to post them for you. HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone and i will try to do better from now on. My wife gets angry if you don’t use a coaster. You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry. (Hulk joke)

  4. Two puzzles finished yesterday. The pattern is by Harvey Byler and found on WoodcraftbyScott.com. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3R MGT blades from artcraftersonline.com. Finish is diluted Shellac and sanded with a Mac Mop.

  5. Its been a rough month and a half for our family, but I've managed to chisel out some sawdust time. Finally finished another mandala. 1" whiteboard, stained Minwax "Honey", used a couple of Pegas MG #3 blades. Good project to put on an audiobook or stream music and set the rest of yourself on autopilot. I started with the inner circle of smaller triangles, then worked my way outward, saving the inner spiral for last. I have some epoxy that I picked up over the holidays (Amazon), and am planning on giving it a try with this one. I'll post pics if it turns out.

. That was my first thought one scrap drawer! Who has ONE scrap DRAWER? Then, My second thought was well maybe it’s because Charlie is actually doing some work with his scraps unlike me. My hubby was going to burn some things down by the lake this past Weekend and threatened to use some of my large collection of. “Scraps” as kindling to start it with. Good thing he’s a woodworker himself even if he doesn’t scroll he understands the “need” for all those scraps. nice work on it Charlie.

What! You have a scrap drawer! My I have scrap boxes, scrap shelves, scrap drawers, scrap tables tops and scrap floor corners. Drives my wife crazy. "I may need that piece for an inlay, dear!"

  10. Changing your display settings doesn't have anything to do with printing. I worked in IT for over 30 years. Printers can be a pain to deal with. My educated guess guess is that the problem is either your printer, driver, or printer settings.

    Family Tree

A co-worker and his fiancé' recently had a baby boy together and asked if I could make something for them. He has a son from a previous relationship and she has a daughter from a previous relationship. I decided to make them a Family Tree. I showed him a few ideas and he liked them. One of the things that he requested was a little black heart on each name. He is the customer and the customer gets what they want! LOL I used 1/4" BB ply and the wife cut the names out on her Cricut. A couple coats of spray finish to top it off. Really wasn't any room for a metal hanger on the back so I gave him a Command Strip to use. He could use one of the "loops" to hang it with a small nail if he chooses to.

  13. Agreed. And my reasoning for using this was because 1) I really have nothing else to do with it, b) if its messed up, I'll just cut it again (it wasn't difficult, just repetitive), and iii) why not? Gotta take the leap sometime.

  14. I'm finally getting back into my woodshop and making something again. Health issues had just about completely put an end to my woodworking two years ago. I lost almost total use of my right leg, and none of the doctors could figure out what was wrong with me. Then last January a mild, but large bruise formed on and around my right knee, and the pain started going away. By about April I was able to put weight on it, but then it took me until about June to walk on it without cane or crutches. The bruise gradually went away along with the pain. I still have some balance problems, but I'm walking again. Just not nearly as well as before all this. I started going back out to the shop in the Fall, but at first I just stayed an hour or so, looking around, and then went back to the house. My son was doing the required maintenance for me when something absolutely needed to be done, but his idea of putting tools and supplies back when finished using them is in a pile just inside the shop door. I still have a significant pile to put away, but I was eager to see if I could make reindeer again. This one is the first in almost 2 years. I made 7 total Wednesday afternoon of the two larger sizes that I make. This is Mrs. Rudolf, slightly smaller than Rudy, the largest, who is almost 4" tall. She is about 3 1/4" tall. The next size down from the Mrs. is Trudy the teen daughter and then the smallest is ear ring size at about 7/8" tall and I call him Rudy Jr. I named the sizes years ago as a way of keeping track of the quantities and sizes that I was making. I've actually made smaller, at about 1/2" tall, but the average success rate of about 4 good in 10 made me quit. I've been making reindeer every year since 2004, except for these last 2 years. Well, with these, this year now isn't a total bust, so only one year, last year, without making any. Every Christmas Season I've just been making and then giving them away to any woman who helps me in some way during the Christmas Season. Every sales clerk, waitress, nurse, etc. gets one if they want it. For some strange reason, the women and teen girls seem to love these things. Most men are insulted if offered one, but I do give them away to woodworkers who want them. As I wish the women a "Very Merry Christmas" at the completion of my business with them, I hold my hand out palm down with a reindeer in it, then drop it in their hand when they reach out. Their excitement makes it worth doing. I've been hugged and even kissed on the cheek, but the smile Is all I'm after, and the chance to improve the "Christmas Spirit" in them. I lost exact count, but it's somewhere around 15,000 total reindeer that I've made since starting this. Reindeer are not the only thing that I make, but it usually keeps me busy from September on, when I'm in the shop and not working on a larger or more pressing project. I took this photo immediately after cutting her out. No eyes or red nose yet, Not even de-fuzzed yet. The eyes and nose are put on with black and red marking pens after de-fuzzing. Then a coat of clear lacquer. These were completed yesterday, before we went shopping, and one has already been given away. I've been avoiding it as much as possible this year, but Suzanne wants to go to the big mall, and traffic is very likely to be a mess around there. She doesn't handle driving in heavy traffic well any more. I don't either, but she thinks I do better than her, but we are very likely to make this venture to the Concord Mills Mall today, so I doubt I'll be making any more reindeer before Christmas this year. Hopefully, I'll be able to get started early and make a bunch of them before the Christmas Season next year. For those interested, that's the clamp that I used to hold the pieces of the reindeer blank together while I'm cutting it, and most 3D patterns, that the reindeer is sitting next to. It's about 6" long and made from 12 mm Baltic Birch plywood about 1" wide, two 6" long pieces of #8-32 stainless steel all thread, four hex nuts, two #8-32 wing nuts, six #8 flat washers. Only the all thread needs to be stainless. I use the stainless steel all thread because the mild steel version are too soft and stretch easily with many repeated uses. I don't have that trouble with the stainless all thread. Charley Attachments First 2021 Reindeer IMG_20211221_161725.jpg 78.8 KB · Views: 15

  15. Just to eliminate Inkscape as having the issue, can you create a circle in another program (like MS Word) and print it out? Before I found Inkscape I used Word to create patterns of basic shapes.

  18. Hi Bob Printing is not the problem - it's getting the size right on what shows up and what actually prints - I agree with what you are saying though This is just like everything else when it comes to technology - Some get through it with no problems and others struggle. We are on different systems and it looks like you will have to find what works for you when a problem occurs - It's been an interesting topic, Thanks to all who replied - Now, let's get back to our regular scheduled program and move on - I think Ray got what he was after. Lovely work Dick. I have not cut anything since Christmas eve, I'm having a holiday from scrolling and doing all the small jobs around the home that need to be done, like sewing and cleaning down shelves, oh and cleaning the oven. Terry's been painting the kitchen and doing odd jobs too. We might get back to the garage in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year to you and your family Dick. Marg

    Magnifier Lamps

Mine can't, but I'm certain that if you look long and hard enough, you will find some that can. I don't have trouble with them, but at this level of magnification, only someone with a significant difference between their eyes would really need them. Don't expect hobbyist pricing though. The last time that I visited my dentist, I was trying to talk him out of one of the pair that he uses. They have separate monoculars attached to the lenses of what look like regular glasses. I would guess that since they were separate, that they could be separately adjusted. Charley

    Picket Fence Welcome

I took a short break from the normal picture type projects and completed this at the request of my niece. This is a Steve Good pattern. I was wanting cedar planks but the only thing Lowe's had at the time was pine. They were very rough cut so I sanded them to knock off the rough edges and saturated them with Thompson water seal. The letters are cut with Pegas #3 MGT from 3/4 pine ply since they were going to be painted. The bell topper is cut from 3/4 pine and painted also. I also cut the bell topper with the #3 Pegas MGT. The Valentines topper is a Steve Good pattern I modified. It is cut from 1/4 pine ply using Pegas #1 MGT. To switch out the toppers, I placed a rare earth magnet in the top of the picket and attached a 1 X 1 metal plate on the back of each topper. I also have a gnome for New Years but it is drying after gluing. I have patterns for most other American holidays that should also work as toppers. Hope you like!

  29. I am afraid I would have to disagree with Malanee's comments about using the epoxy on this piece, which is very well done and an attractive piece. That being said, what I mean by that is, it is the times where you go ahead and cut some fret work that you have backed away from because you never thought you were capable of doing. Then you give it a try and find out you can do that difficult of an item. It is then that you, 'move ahead' in your efforts. If one does not give the 'scary' things a try, one will find they are only discouraging themselves and will not advance to where they would like to be. That is why trying epoxy at this time, I believe to be a good idea. What if it becomes messed up and you wish you would have left well enough alone? Try again, maybe with a simpler project next time and try again, eventually you will learn to do that well. If you do have a bad experience this time, keep the failed attempt and use it to compare after you master it. You will be glad you tried once you get there. I say,"spread those wings and learn to fly." Just my take on it. Dick heppnerguy

  32. That photo of the wood that you are presently using tells me that you need a new and sharper high tooth count blade on your table saw, and a zero clearance insert to minimize the opening around the blade to just wide enough for the blade to come through. Both will stop the chipping of the edges of the wood blanks that you are cutting to size. If using a hand held circular saw, there are ways to make a zero clearance insert for it too. Ask, and I'll provide the info. Charley

    At Last

Hi All this is two projects one is one of my first one that I can say I was really starting to get into the hobby. The other one is peace on harder and thicker wood I was lucky to get. Did it over the holiday was worried my machine would not take it as it was my first peace of hard wood. It was a champ was worried for nothing. The first one I used old X ray film and carben paper to put it on wood and drew the pattern on paper by hand. Then came the computer in our lives with the internet and all ye ha then the fun really began. Barbara

  34. I don't have inkscape in front of me, but I know that when programming a cnc the measurement of a line (kerf) can be made from the inside, outside or center of the line. Try making the line of your object very thin, resize your object, and print. See if that gets you closer to the size you want. This is assuming your object is a line and not a fill.

  35. I often cut things becasue they appeal to someone else or I would not have wanted to bother with them. then, sometimes something is a little different and catches my eye and I just have to cut it for no particular reason. Everyone has their own tastes and some like puzzles and toys. I have done both and am finding out that the toys, which I really do not like much myself, happen to turn out to be some of the items I enjoy most to make and the receivers seem to like them a lot, even if I am not too crazy about them myself. Some new cuts

If you used flat blades you need to check your table top for blisters! As much spinning as had to take place with all those cuts, there will either be blisters or you wore a hole through it!. Outstanding job.

    Wood jumping question

Bill has given you most of the reasons for your issue, except one. I have found that to slow a blade speed will cause your problem. Try speeding up the blade speed. I teach my students to start with a medium speed, then adjust from there.

  40. I haven't been to the lumber store in over a year I think.. I still have enough to probably get me through most of this year since I have picked up a lot of cut offs etc. from my brothers mill. I'll likely need some BBply by early summer though. My local news did a report saying the prices are heading back up due to covid.. and short supply etc.
