  1. Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins. One of my favorite pieces so far. I love the Lord Of The Rings movies and I think this quote pretty well sums up the moral of the movies. Not a bad quote to live by. The symbol under the quote is a symbol J R R Tolkien made up. It is made up of his 4 initials. The cutting is 9" X 11"-1/2" red oak with some mystery pallet wood I glued together and planed for the backer. I nearly wrecked it a few times including a piece that broke off, that I was able to glue back. And worst of all, I put it in my chair while I was working on the backer, and sat on it. Can't believe it survived. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6C8SX0mWP0

    This week's work

I had been wanting to try an airplane so I found this pattern. Came out pretty good for the first one. Does anyone have a source for military roundel decals? I found some on E-bay but all are shipped from China. It'd be nice to find something a little closer to home.

My daughter saw this pattern and really wanted it so I cut it out for her and she took it home with a smile on her face. A very quick and easy cut too. Dick heppnerguy

First time using sprial blades. Thanks Jim Blume for great patterns. Going to do more of the series. I have #12 ready to start on. Now to make frames.

No, you are not the oddball. I see these methods being touted all the time and since I have been scrolling for, well let's just say a couple of years, and although I tried those methods, I find no appreciable difference, and essentially save steps and money simply using a repositioning adhesive to affix my patterns to the project. I do lightly sand the top piece though which helps the adhesive to better bond. I am not simply a sceptic either. Whenever I see a new method or idea, I do give it a fair test to see if it works. I did that and found it to be a complete waste of my time and money. As to lubricating the blades as some say, I find the opposite. I do use blue painter's tape on the edges when stack sawing to hold the pieces together, and when I hit some of that tape, I notice it being harder/slower to cut. Slower means friction to me and what dulls blades in my opinion is heat. But, as I will always say, people should do whatever works for them. And I will never say that this way or that is best. What's best is what works for each person. I am sure some will disagree, and that of course is the way of the world. Regardless, enjoy the journey.

    iPad updated

After roughly a year of being only to use the meme’s to respond to posts, I am finally once again able to respond via typing. Apparently, if one doesn’t do updates on his iPad, he won’t be able to interact with others. I thought for sure I would have to buy a new iPad, but I had someone do a force update and it worked! And it only cost me $40.00.

    I am new but old.....

Hey Gang...I just found your site...I am Tom or better known as Grumpa, I think it should be Dude.... I recently retired and have always been a hobby oriented kinda guy. So built out my garage and added many tools - including a Delta Scroll Saw. Hadn't cut since grade school but it all came back fast and learned lots of new tricks on you tube. Below are some samples of my recent work. I do a lot of custom puzzles - from photos that people send me...complex pieces and my own whimsy pieces. My largest trouble lately - living in MI - has been finding a way to finish natural wood in the shop - no fresh air so fumes are too strong. Looking at adding venting to the shop ... or finding a finish that has much less odor. Biggest problem is finishing walnut pieces....walnut - the wood that hates me OK, I do ramble..Cheers and glad to be with da gang of wild Scrollers Tom

  17. I found a new website called Cute Cutter. It's primarily for making patterns for vinyl cutting machines but I've had fun playing around with it and made this simple pattern of my grandson. Although it's a free sight you can donate if you want to. Well worth it.

  20. Save them and when you get famous for one of your scroll sawn art pieces the value of that wire might be outstandingly crazy.. don't forget to save the blades from that famous piece you made too.. they'll also be worth a lot.

    Wire around the blade

Barbara I have had a need for some fine wire on occasion, I can't remember what I used it on. But I know where to find it. I also have a very big spool of fine magnet wire that I rescued when I retired. We used to have a spool winding machine for making custom inductors and coils in the old analog electronics days.

    Look for the good.

Thanks Joe. I used a free program I found called Cute Cutter. You can Google it. I think it's primarily for making patterns for the Cricut vinyl cutting machines. It's fun to play with anyway. I was able to play around with it and get something close and then clean it up a little in Paint 3D. It was still a bit of a rough draft when I glued it on the wood. This is what I used as a pattern.

    Packing Tape

I was always a little afraid to do that because I was afraid the pattern would lift when I was cutting. So glad to be a scroller and find all the different ways people do things. I have hit many places where I was sure I was doing things in the best possible way and later tried something different that made changes for me. Dick heppnerguy

    Wedding Gift

My daughter is in a wedding next month, a girl she grew up with is getting married. My wife asked me to make one of these for her (him). I have made 7 or 8 of these in the last few years but I'm really digging the live edge's on this one. All of the others that I have made were clean cuts with no live edge. I just couldn't let myself cut this natural edge off. The bottom is Walnut and the top piece is made from Cherry. My wife cut the name's and design out on her Cricut. A couple coats of General's Arm-r-seal.

  42. Here is what I have done so far this year. The two bears are for the grand-kids for Valentines day. Steve Good pattern cut from Sapelle, Maple & Aspen. The Gnomes are from Gayle at Scrollers Cafe. Cut from an old MDF baseboard, and sapelle for the heart. The segmented rose is from Steve Good as well. Cut from pine. Tried a couple of different techniques. Overall, please with the results except the backing. That was a big fail, but shushhh, no one needs to know!!!

  43. You won't recognize this unless you're a pretty big Lord Of The Rings fan. It was an Inn/Tavern in the first movie. I cut it from an image I found on Google. *Decided to add a little brass and hang it on our barn quilt.

    Santa was good to me!

I could probably afford one of those, but...I would have to move my table saw, router table and sanding center out of my shop to make room for it, and it might not even fit through the short door. Thats what you get when you move to Florida and can only have a tiny shop. Congrats. Great piece of equipment.

  45. Rolf, You did the pattern proud!!! It is wonderful to see someone elses take on a pattern I made available. Very nicely done. I do like the bevel on the base. Adds a little bit more class to the overall piece. Your original post would have been more appropriate in "Bragging Rights". A project to really brag about!

    Hegner stand question?

Would it not be worthwhile to build your own stand for your Hegner? You could build it for whatever height is good for you. This is the one my husband built for me including a tilt table top.

  48. The Hawk stands are high too, I think back in the day people didn't "sit at jobs" and thus they made them to stand at, LOL.. Like Dave, I have a adjustable stool that I can use at both the Hawk and the Excalibur. The EX-21 is short compared to the Hawks.. The stool I have is at the tallest setting for the Hawk and almost near the lowest setting for the Excalibur.. I think the stool would be a much cheaper option than a new stand.. Cutting the original stand down might work though.. I'd be worried about cutting all the legs exactly the same though.. unless you have a way to add adjustable feet to it? Don't know how well the stands sell used but I've seen them on eBay and other places for over $100.. If you chose to go the new stand route.. you might be able to pull part of your money back from selling the taller stand.. I'd think it'd take some time to sell it though, but I could be wrong. Edit: Forgot to mention I also use a 6 x 6 chunk of pole barn post to place my foot switch on for the taller stand at the Hawks.. otherwise I can't reach the foot switch / floor from my stand..

I m a spray glue guy all the way. No tape or other stuff, no time, money or patience for that stuff. Just a super duper light coat of spray glue on the pattern. Then you have to let it sit for at least 20 minutes. srs. It wil be barely tacky. Put it on the wood. and cut. Will come off when you are done and stay in place for cutting. Takes some fiddling with to figure it out but once you do you will never go back,

    Packing Tape

Back when I started, I learned from on here to use blue tape first, the pattern glue to the blue tape followed by a covering of packing tape. I tried the packing tape twice and gave up on it because dust would get between it and the pattern. I continued to do the blue tape thing for some time and then read to just apply the pattern glued directly to the wood. That is now my preferred method. I only use the blue tape if I stack cut and then I may only use it around the outside edges to hold the stack togerher, or if the cutting gets real fragile and I think it will help hold things together. I did an experiment once when cutting Cherry and I did get less burning when I put down blue tape, but that was the only place I saw there may be a benefit as far as maybe lubricating something. Just my experience. It certainly does not hurt to use the tape if you have good wood. It not it may pull up wood fibers when removing it.
