  1. Cut these the other day, all cut on the Excalibur with either a FD-UR or a FD- SR #5 One of them or maybe a couple was done with a Pegas #5.. I was experimenting with the blades to compare the cut edge as I seen someone posted on FB somewhere that they liked the smoother cut left behind by the FD blades.. Got to say I do believe the cut edges are more of a smooth almost polished look compared to the Pegas.. Still like cutting with the Pegas better though.. LOL Also just trying to use up the 2 gross of each style of FD blade I have on hand..LOL Anyway, enjoy the pictures..

  4. I started making these for apprentice lineworkers once they completed their training (4 years) and became journey level lineworkers. I retired back in September and didn't wnat to leave out apprentices that I hired and started their training while I was still there. I plan on still making them as workers complete their training. May not be able to give in person but hope they like them.

  5. I'm near Shipshewana Indiana, I saw a vender inside the venue with his trailer selling turnings. And lots of RVs in the camping area, they could use more hand made crafts!! We got tired of all the store bought looking crap. You're work would be a welcome addition to the venue.

  10. I had to send my Dewalt in a few years back as it's speed kept doing wonky things. Got it back, same issue. Took it back to the service center, they sent it back to Edmonton. They couldn't figure it out. Got a brand new saw for the $300 rebuild cost. Anyone need a new table?? lol

    Scroll saw dilemma

Good morning all, I have a small dilemma in which I would like you thoughts. In September my Dewalt DW788 type1 began knocking. I reviewed the Gwinnett woodworkers YouTube videos and Bob Brokaw's videos. After opening my scroll saw, I realized I was in over my head. Buttoned it up and on October 8th sent it to Dewalt to be overhauled. They would completely rebuild it for $300.00. On about the middle of January, I asked the status and was told parts not available and not sure when they will be. While waiting, I purchased a new Delta 40-694 scroll saw. One week later my Dewalt showed up. Completely rebuilt to original factory condition. Dilemma is which one to keep and which one to sell. They both run great and vibration and sound are very very close. Sorry for the length of this note but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks so much, Regards, Jim Paskell

  14. I've been using 5/8" - 3/4" inches.. photos above are either Cherry or Poplar. I think you could make them as thin as 1/2" and be fine too, or even thinner stock if you cut the hole for the clock all the way through. I do think the 5/8" - 3/4" look a little better and stronger.. More than 3/4" kind of bulky looking to me but really most anything you like should work so long as the clock fits in the material well. I've been considering trying to make some with thin 1/8" material ( probably stack cut BB ply ) and cutting a solid slightly larger and thicker backer ( maybe 1/2" walnut or cherry ).. as these are sort of fragile if they was to get knocked over.. thought the bone shaped base is pretty stable.. but would be rock solid if the backer was a solid piece.. Though I'm still experimenting with these designs and time will tell if they need a backer for more strength as I sell them and see if they make it to the customer broken or not, LOL.. Don't think there will be an issue unless you live where earthquakes happen a lot and they get shuffled around a lot.. We'll see how customer feedback is in the next year..

  15. Really nice. I am a die hard FD-UR user. Played with the Pegas MGT blade but still go back to the FD. I am sure it is what you get used to. Question. Do you modify the puzzle pattern or buy the non puzzle patterns or both?

    Scroll saw dilemma

I'm in the keep both category as well I have 2 saws since the wife is now cutting and we have set them both up to do different things which expedites our cutting projects tremendously and makes our process more efficient! Unless you need to recoup that $300, then I would sell the Delta and keep the dewalt

  23. My brother lived in on rv. He would park in the walmart parking lot and at night would sit in the dark crying himself to sleep. he was cold, miserable and always hassled by bums and and the cops. I thought it sounded like fun until I thought of that and he explained the reality of the plumbing and electric and what not. of course had he had some money he would have had those things but if he had had money, he never would have done it in the first place. Just a different take on it.

    Scroll saw dilemma

All, Thanks so much for the input. I truly appreciate all the responses. Looks like I'm keeping the Dewalt. It's an old friend and fits well in my shop. I'm retired and woodworking is a hobby that keeps me off the streets and out if trouble. I don't really see me needing two scroll saws. If the Dewalt dies again, I'll buy a new one. This rebuilt will hopefully last as long as I well. Thank again all. Jm

    new cuttings

Got two Russ Beard patterns done, both were a lot of fun but each was over 400 cuts. The wolf one is done on a 3/4 inch oak TV tray. the 2 tigers are done on oak also but it is several strips I edge glued up for a cutting piece, it is about a 1/2 inch thick. Blades used were on the 3/4 piece #5 UR dutchman and for the 1/2 oak # 3 UR dutchman blades. All worked good for me. Had a small issue on the large 3/4 inch oak but Charlie Hand helped out and gave me a couple of tips that worked great. My thanks to Russ for both patterns I really am happy how they came out.

  31. Very nice and very thoughtful. I'm positive they will be liked a lot! Back in the early 1960's I was hired by the Long Island Lighting Company (Long Island, NY) and was required to join the IBEW but it was on the clerical side of the company, so not a very active Union. The IBEW for the field side (linemen and the like) were the strong active union that got us all our benefits...whatever they got we got!!! Eventhough I moved into management later in my carreer, in my retirement since 1996, I'm still enjoying the benefits that I receive that was the actual result of being an IBEW member.

I have been looking at base cabinets from a kitchen. The space I am changing out has my "shop" sink in it. The area used to be my old laundry room and it is very handy having the sink there for cleanups.

    Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing - my latest project, some of my customers asking me who I coming up with patterns. Sometimes idea of the pattern and finished pattern are very different. This pattern is nice example: fistly I wanted to make just a pike, then I remember that one of my customer asked for "gone fishing" pattern, so I added this sign, but this scene looks not finished, I added fishing rod, but it looks not realistic, I added fishing line with bait, it came out too fragile, I added seaweed to make more connected areas. And here is final result Video of making project Gone Fishing pattern

    A few cuts

A few cutting in the new shop. The Ice skate, Dream Catcher and Cupid are cut from 1/4 inch Furniture Grade Pine ( my new favorite) . I bought the pine at Johnson workshop and I really like it. It cuts easy and there is very little sanding. Has anyone else used this wood? Thoughts?

    A few cuts

In the lumber business that is called C common white pine. Basic definition is no knots larger than 1/8". If you are buying that for the price marked on the tag that is a great price. That works out to be $4.40 per board foot. I was paying that for it 10 years ago. The dream catcher is killer.
