There are many of my patterns in the pattern files though I do have many more on my computer. I have been working on organizing them so that I can put more of them here. If there is something you may have seen cut and can't find it, feel free to give a shout out and I'll see if I can help you find it.10 points

Cleaning up the shop a little today,, found several patterns that I forgot all about. Some of them I found were I believe made by Grandpa last year,,, maybe the year before... it's been hectic the last couple of years! He made me some word in word patterns of my hometown and my current town that I have lived in for the last 33 years along with all of the places (City and State) that my wife and I have vacationed at for the last 33 years. I planned on making them all and hanging them on the beams going around my back porch. I also found about 10 pieces of Maple that I prepped back then. So I made my hometown today. May make some more tomorrow. I started out using my favorite go to blade.. FD UR1. It didn't seem to cut very well, this Maple is 1/2" thick and hard! I switch to an Olson #3 mach speed. It seemed to cut a little better so I stuck with it but it still took just over an hour to cut. Looking at the piece now,, looks like it may be Curly Maple. It still needs a finish and a hanger installed. I also included a pic of the porch where I will hang them. It is kinda out of the weather but I'll prob use a marine spar finish on them to help protect them.9 points

Did A Couple More Dog Clocks

Cut these the other day, all cut on the Excalibur with either a FD-UR or a FD- SR #5 One of them or maybe a couple was done with a Pegas #5.. I was experimenting with the blades to compare the cut edge as I seen someone posted on FB somewhere that they liked the smoother cut left behind by the FD blades.. Got to say I do believe the cut edges are more of a smooth almost polished look compared to the Pegas.. Still like cutting with the Pegas better though.. LOL Also just trying to use up the 2 gross of each style of FD blade I have on hand..LOL Anyway, enjoy the pictures..3 points -
Its been awhile since I have posted any of my works but just wanted to put this one on! This is a Jim Blume pattern and it has been a few years since I have cut any portrait style with just using spiral blades, fd 2/0, 3/0! The cutting is 11"x 14" using 1/8" bb mounted on 1/2" mdf. I cut 2 and they will be given to 2 different animal rescues. Erv3 points

I started making these for apprentice lineworkers once they completed their training (4 years) and became journey level lineworkers. I retired back in September and didn't wnat to leave out apprentices that I hired and started their training while I was still there. I plan on still making them as workers complete their training. May not be able to give in person but hope they like them.2 points

Does Jim have a place online for all of his patterns or is everyone getting them from the Pattern Library here at the Village? Thanks, Barry2 points

Magnetic mat

I had read about this some time ago. Everyone seemed happy with it even if it was just used for a zero clearance . Thanks for bringing this back up I had forgotten about. Where did you get your mat ?2 points -
I've thought of doing the same thing. Glad it works for you!2 points

Blade Life Versus number of pilot holes
heppnerguy reacted to Jim Blume for a topic
I often hear folks talking about how many cuts they can get out of each blade. Of course we all have opinions concerning that. I bit too and tried to figure out approximately how many holes I could cut out of each blade. And then it hit my wee brain. To illustrate this better, let me ask, "How many pilot holes are in this project?"1 point -
With a very nice gift card from Woodcraft and a nice check, I was able to purchase a Laguna 14/12 band saw. The two deciding factors on this saw is 12” resaw capacity and it runs on standard 110v. I ordered the mobility kit and and a Laguna ResawKing blade. Still waiting on the blade. Looking forward to re-sawing my wood on this!1 point

Nice saw dan. I'm like Frank. Wish I had room for a good bandsaw. Good luck with it.1 point

Word in a word sign
Scrolling Steve reacted to flarud for a topic
I had someone build it. I wish I would have done it myself but I just didn't have anyone that could help,, those beams are heavy! Made from Cypress, the post are true 6x6's. I recently had a fireplace built, contrary to what people think.. it does get cold down here in Florida. It was 26° yesterday morning.1 point -

Olson blade quality...
NC Scroller reacted to Greatgrandpawrichard for a topic
My wife tells all of her friends that she knows exactly where I am all day long. "He's in his woodshop sitting at the scroll saw creating some new project!" is what she tells them. I am about to finish a large order for 250 3D Wooden Tulips for a very good customer. Last year they ordered 150 of the Tulips and they sold them all out in the first 3 days of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. This year they upped their order expecting to have them last a few more days. ( I am guessing they won't so I am going to make up an extra 100 to keep here in my shop. )1 point -
One in that project, nicely done. For me some blades will last for days. At other times i go through a bunch in what seems like minutes. I have noticed one constant. When I am breaking a lot of blades, its always me. I am not relaxed, not settled in but in a hurry. I usually step away and get my head right before continuing. Another constant is the tighter the area I want to just make it around the corner of, thats also when they will break just to prove to me who the actual boss of the saw is.1 point

new cuttings
Phantom Scroller reacted to penquin for a topic
Got two Russ Beard patterns done, both were a lot of fun but each was over 400 cuts. The wolf one is done on a 3/4 inch oak TV tray. the 2 tigers are done on oak also but it is several strips I edge glued up for a cutting piece, it is about a 1/2 inch thick. Blades used were on the 3/4 piece #5 UR dutchman and for the 1/2 oak # 3 UR dutchman blades. All worked good for me. Had a small issue on the large 3/4 inch oak but Charlie Hand helped out and gave me a couple of tips that worked great. My thanks to Russ for both patterns I really am happy how they came out.1 point -

Gone Fishing
frankorona reacted to alexfox for a topic
Gone Fishing - my latest project, some of my customers asking me who I coming up with patterns. Sometimes idea of the pattern and finished pattern are very different. This pattern is nice example: fistly I wanted to make just a pike, then I remember that one of my customer asked for "gone fishing" pattern, so I added this sign, but this scene looks not finished, I added fishing rod, but it looks not realistic, I added fishing line with bait, it came out too fragile, I added seaweed to make more connected areas. And here is final result Video of making project Gone Fishing pattern1 point -
I did similar when mine started to feel stiff and stick a little. Just a drop of oil along the shaft that goes vertical through the clamp body and let it work its way down the hole and the clamp was moving super smooth again.1 point

Probably Wayne said it best.. that is why I made a educated guess on my times as I never really paid attention to actual times.. ( I might be surprised at how wrong I may be LOL). BUT I will go back to my thought process that keeping track of "actual cut time" rather than how many holes or how many projects etc.. would be a way more accurate test... Speaking of different wood types.. also consider that the same type of wood can have different density and moisture content.. probably most accurate test would also be done with BBply as in my opinion it is probably the most consistent in density etc. than any other wood I've cut.1 point

I'm always curious if the way I cut impacts the blade life. To find out means keeping some sort of track of how long (or short) the blade life is. Yes comparing cutting inch thick plywood to 1/4 inch pine is apples to oranges, and simple shapes to lots of tight corners is the same. Even at a hobby level you still want to be fairly economical with the blade usage. And that means tracking, a least a little bit, of your blade usage.1 point

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. This was fun to cut and I wasn't really a dog person until we were ask to dog set a couple of dogs for the granddaughter. One was a big male pit bull that would tolerate a new person for about 15 minutes than you were friends for life! The other one was a mixture of starfershire, pit bull, that part I don,t thank so, does not act like one. The big male had to be put down last year because of a huge tumor in his stomach that could not be removed. The smaller dog, female, has been staying here going on a year so I guess she is a permanent resident which is fine with us! Anyway thank everyone and i really thank Mr. Blume for this pattern. I use Olsen Precision Ground blades to cut out 3/4" toys because they outlast any other blade I have tried. I use Pegas and FD blades when doing my inlay though.1 point
