Occasionally we have children visit our home. We like to have things for them to play with and make their visit fun. I keep a box of building blocks made from scrap 2x4's (they are such a big hit & a favorite with the kids), a small home made cradle and a doll my daughter helped me pick our that is young child safe, lots of Fisher Price, and games and puzzles. Some of the toys are just imagination toys from my scrap wood bin. little wood cars, airplanes, turned tops, etc. These are a couple I made one morning when I was feeling lazy and had a hard time being productive.5 points

name and a rose

I'm starting to be able to do things with Inkscape, now to retain the knowledge and not have to relearn again and again. Now that I can modify the text, I can use various words in combo with the rose (sweetheart, thankyou, and names/other languages). In my last pattern I was able to change the color the lines printed in (red) and I was able to add red dots to indicate where to drill (the dots were .035 diameter, so when drilled they disappear, making it easier to see if all the opening have been drilled (so easy to miss one or two)) Original pattern (mother) Steve Good, font on new word z003, 5/16" hardwood, FD #1 polar blade, BLO finish.5 points -

I was kind of thinking... thought I read somewhere the the newer DeWalts are made in China too? Maybe wrong on that DeWalt I had was a awesome saw.. and way better saw than my China made Excalibur.. I did have to pull it apart and replace the bearings in the old DW after a couple years.. Once I did that and put some good synthetic grease in the bearings.. that saw run a lot of hours for about another 6 years before needing a complete rebuild again... Back then I didn't saw nearly as much as I do now but I was still running it a lot.. Just my opinion.. If you're mechanical enough and are happy with the Delta. I'd try rebuilding the saw and using a good grease.. Pegas and the like saws are great saws.. But I don't see such a huge advantage over the price difference unless you are doing a lot of angle cutting... Really nice to have the table flat and the head tilt instead of the table tilting.. Other than that it's almost the same saw.. You can adjust the blade aggression on the Pegas and like saws but if you're used to using the delta and used to how it cuts then it's probably not going to make a big deal of difference for you..4 points

My saw has thrown a rod or something. New saw time?

Cleaning up the shop a little today,, found several patterns that I forgot all about. Some of them I found were I believe made by Grandpa last year,,, maybe the year before... it's been hectic the last couple of years! He made me some word in word patterns of my hometown and my current town that I have lived in for the last 33 years along with all of the places (City and State) that my wife and I have vacationed at for the last 33 years. I planned on making them all and hanging them on the beams going around my back porch. I also found about 10 pieces of Maple that I prepped back then. So I made my hometown today. May make some more tomorrow. I started out using my favorite go to blade.. FD UR1. It didn't seem to cut very well, this Maple is 1/2" thick and hard! I switch to an Olson #3 mach speed. It seemed to cut a little better so I stuck with it but it still took just over an hour to cut. Looking at the piece now,, looks like it may be Curly Maple. It still needs a finish and a hanger installed. I also included a pic of the porch where I will hang them. It is kinda out of the weather but I'll prob use a marine spar finish on them to help protect them.2 points

I have been homesetting my wife for the past 2 years. In the summer time I can go out to the shop for a hour or so about 30 min. at t time so this winter i set my back up saw in a spare bedroom with a vac set up to keep the dust down. I don't get much done but it helps my nerves a lot. and my wife is not neglected .When i need wood I get my sister in law to set with her for 2 or 3 hours so I get plenty of wood at a time. I have kept my sanity this way.. IKE2 points -

Keeping patterns together
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
I keep a small roll of blue painter's tape (3/4" width) near my saw. Once I cut out a piece bordering a thin section, I'll keep that waste piece in place, and put a strip of blue tape over the top of it to hold it in place, trying to keep it from covering nearby lines that still need to be cut. Once everything is done, I'll just peel up the tape/pattern as usual and these pieces pop out with it.2 points -
Thanks Paul. It must have been the Steve Good one. I will check it out. Marg2 points

I retired from scrolling & gave my 40-694 to a son. Loved it. 2 problems I had with it knocking: 1. Remove the switch cover & cam that pulls the rod for blade tension. Take a round rasp and file a groove for the rod. 2. On the connecting rod from the motor, there is a bolt that powers everything. It sheared in the middle, but wasn't visable. Go to a hardware store and replace it with a stainless steel bolt. Stainless is much stronger. I loved the saw and thought it received too many negative ratings. Would speculate the everything could be replaced with Dewalt 788 parts, with the possible exception of the motor. Hang on to it and grease the bearings every year.2 points -
I stepped up from a DeWALT to a Pegas a year ago. The Pegas is a great saw and I am very pleased with it.2 points

Well I am back, I haven't been able to log on for awhile. I have been doing my best at playing Home Nurse to my Wife . She finally had Full Knee Replacement on her Left knee, And I have been playing home nurse to her, It has been a full time job. But she has been doing Fantastic. She got her staples removed today, boy they were a butch. She's able to walk better, with a walker. So maybe I can get back down to my shop and make some sawdust. and get back here to The Village and get caught up.1 point

I thought I would try a pattern by Huntter from the library, the crappie pattern,I have been working on it and noticed the top fin looks like there is not mutch holding it together after cutting out the black. Is their a secret to keeping it all together? My saw is a Halk and blade feeds from bottom up.1 point

new2woodwrk reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Yes, but one turn may not be enough. I had to turn mine 3 or 4 turns if I recall. The point where you file is on the aluminum cover where it sits over the rod. If you check out scrollsaws.com there are pictures to guide you. A whole section there on Dewalt fixes. Very informative and should apply to your saw in most cases. To edit: I never saw a video on that particular subject. All the videos I've seen were for disassembling the saw to check out and grease all the bearings/sleeves. The only thing you should have to remove to do what I'm talking about is up where the off/on switch/tension lever is. You have to get under that cover to see the rod. The cover goes over the rod if I recall1 point -

My saw has thrown a rod or something. New saw time?
OCtoolguy reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
The chuck heads for the Delta do not have a tension lever. The hex heads and lock nuts do not tighten enough and there is a lot of side play in the heads more than there was with the original chuck heads. Also there is a lot of side play in the arms that hold the chuck heads both top and bottom. But I believe that is normal. I have tested all the hex heads and lock nuts for tightness and they are pretty much factory tight except for the Pegas heads which are now tighter.1 point -
My saw has thrown a rod or something. New saw time?
WayneMahler reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
That sounds like maybe the tension rod is hitting the cover plate just the same as the Dewalts do. There is a fix on scrollsaws.com for the Dewalt. Not difficult if it's the same thing. I've not seen a Delta taken down so I'm not sure.1 point -

I've been there two times, a year apart. The healing process for a knee replacement takes time. The exercises determine how well she will recover. The more that she can do, the better she will recover, but when the pain is too much it's time to stop until the next day. Full recovery, at least for me, took about a year, but I was walking with a cane in about a month. The replacements are not as good as the originals before I wrecked them, but far better than I was going through before they were replaced. I finally got them to replace them when I started asking for a wheelchair. I should have asked much sooner. Charley1 point

I had someone build it. I wish I would have done it myself but I just didn't have anyone that could help,, those beams are heavy! Made from Cypress, the post are true 6x6's. I recently had a fireplace built, contrary to what people think.. it does get cold down here in Florida. It was 26° yesterday morning.1 point -

I have my Make Shift way of doing the same as Rays Does. Cheaper also. I use a Bad Ash Vac. Quiter than normal vac. Smaller also. Sits under table. Table I made and my Hegner Purrs like a Kitten with almost no Vibration..... Thanks for putting up with this. Took the pictures upon completion of assembling it. Lots of sawdust underside. But this unit will Suck all the Dust immediately.... Danny :+}1 point
