  1. Back on January 24th, Dave Monk posted “Box for Valentines Day’ (https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/45253-box-for-valentines-day/) made from Maple and Padauk. I liked the box and asked him if he would share his pattern so I could make one for my lady, which he graciously did. A big Thank You to Dave. I did not have the necessary Maple and Padauk wood on hand and decided to order it from Ocooh. Delivery took some time and other priorities intervened, so I got a late start and had to tell her that her Valentines present would be late. Well, I got it started and the lacquer finish is drying as I write this. So, she will get it tomorrow, Valentines day. I modified Dave’s pattern slightly. My box is cut from blanks that were 8” square so the box is about 7 ½” tall by 7 ½” wide. I also decided to use five 3/8” layers (Padauk, Maple, Padauk, Maple, Padauk) which made my box 1 7/8” deep, allowing me to cut two stacks, a 3 and a 2. I use 1/2” Maple for the top and Bottom. The Top inset Heart detail was made from a stack of cut-outs from the body (Padauk, Maple, Maple) which produced a 1 1/8” glued up stack. When I cut the opening in the top for the Heart detail I undercut it slightly and sanded it to get a nice tight fit. The glued in inset piece projects 3/8” below the Top to act as a stopper for the Top into the Body and 1/4"above the top to provide the raised Heart detail. Dave has the advantage of having a Band Saw and a spindle sander which I do not have room for in my tiny shop. I eased all the edges with a round over bit in my Router and did all my sanding using my Dremel and a lot by hand. That is where I ran into some difficulty. Not the sanding but with the Padauk dust!!!! The Padauk sanding dust acks like a stain when it gets on the Maple. You just cannot wipe it off clean with a tack cloth. I even applied a coat of Lacquer Sanding Sealer to try and control the staining, but It did not really do the job. Like Dave, I finished the box with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer and added a Red Felt to the box bottom. I like the way it came out, but not happy with the Red staind on some of the Maple. Lacquer drys fast so I was able to sneek and take these pic's before she gets to see it. As always comments and critique is welcome. EDIT 2/14/22: My lady was very happy!!!!

  2. Our Harry Potter crazy granddaughter is turning 8 next week. I did a Potter portrait and made a compound cut wizard’s wand and stand. The wand and stand were from Al Baggetta patterns. The pattern was another C. Dearing pattern. The wand was cut from African Rosewood, the stand was Zebra wood and Hard Maple.

  4. I had a memory to pop up on Facebook from one year ago with the portraits on my shop wall. I counted 31. Today there are 70. My wife says I spend too much time in the d#*% shop. She may have a point.

    Valentine Gnome

A project completed this week. The pattern is by Steve Good. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. The heart is stained with Samen Raspberry Stain. The final finish is spray Shellac with sanding between coats. A gift for Dianne. Be it Gnome that I love you.

    For my Valentine

Hi Every one, It's for my Valentine (for 43 years, I've been lucky) Who said not her? I saw the pattern on Steve Good's site but when I started cutting I thought I'd stop there. I like simple things. I think it's not bad. Eric

  10. I haven’t quite finished this portrait of Gollum from the Lord Of The Rings,(a Charles Dearing pattern). My backboard has a huge knot in it and I sanded the black off to try to make it look like a pool of water to go with his fish. I haven’t glued it up yet, as I can’t decide whether to leave the knot as is, or black it out. Opinions?

  14. In the description of wands , in the books, a special feather or quill from a bird is used inside a wizard wand. So an extra touch to you gift is to add a feather inside the compond cut handle. Or have her find a special feather and put it in the handle. Me. Mark Eason

  29. I frequently peruse clip art on the internet when creating scroll saw patterns. Recently, I was looking for four similar but different Christmas trees to attach to the doors of boxes that I made to hold ceramic trees. (see: Box for Ceramic Christmas Tree - Other Woodworks - Scroll Saw Village) I quickly found just what I was looking for, cut the trees out of 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood, painted them with acrylic paint, and glued them to the doors. Here is a photo of the four trees:

  32. If you do another version the blue lake looks good. Might enhance the fish by water color for trout patterns. But golem is good as it is. He is a colorless character. Me. Mark Eason

  35. Frank, Nice work. I also experienced a bit of paduak dust on one of my projects. The lily flower. How did you align the top and bottom smaller hearts? Eye ball? Did you use weights for gluing? how did you prevent slipage during glue process? Me. Mark Eason

  39. Very nice. I use a lot of Padauk and feel your frustration, as it has happened to me, too. I find that the dust sneaks up, gets on my hands, and the expletive deletives come roaring. I have sometimes lucked out with the help of mineral spirits, but not always, especially if it gets on Baltic Birch. Regardless, the piece is beautiful.
