  1. I presented my wife with the Steve Good Valentine's gnomes this morning for Valentine's Day and she surprised me with a project of her own, a Valentine's card on stretched canvas! She enjoys her crafts, not woodworking, as much as I enjoy scrolling!

    New screen name

I have changed my screen name; formerly Algae, now TAIrving. I joined this forum 1-1/2 years ago after buying my first scroll saw, a used Porter-Cable, from a neighbor. I had low expectations but wanted to learn something about the scroll-sawing hobby. Wow did I learn! First of all, it is not a hobby, it is an obsession! And so much more! And the learning never stops. Now I have a Pegas scroll saw and a shop full of completed and half-completed projects and my wife has learned to tolerate it all, the endless gifting of projects, me returning from the shop covered in sawdust, etc. Thanks for your camaraderie! See you on the forums.

    New screen name

A name is just a name. My full name is Thurman Algernon Irving, Jr. That should go someways towards an explanation. Setting my middle name aside, I have sometimes been asked if my name is Thurman Irving or Irving Thurman. It is all confusing. Regarding my middle name, the family story is that, at the time my father was born, my grandmother was reading a book whose main protagonist was named Algernon. You can breathe now.

    Bulldozer

Been working on this off an on. Red Oak an Walnut. Finished by dipping in 50/50 BLO. Front blade goes up and down also the blade swivels left an right. Hardest part was making the tracks. You can’t see in pictures but the tracks are guided by wheels. The tracks turn also. Used Pegas MG #5. Used bandsaw to cut groves around the engine cover. 15”x9”x9” pattern from Toys & Joys.

  5. I decided to change my screen name. Thanks to Travis for making the change. When I first joined the Village I had no idea of what I was getting into. But now I realize how many friends, how much valuable information, how many new ideas, etc, or just how much I would get hooked into this hobby. And so, a friendlier name (I hope). Cheers to you all and thanks for helping me learn so much about scroll-sawing and woodworking in general. See you on the forums.

    Valentine Gnome

A project completed this week. The pattern is by Steve Good. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. The heart is stained with Samen Raspberry Stain. The final finish is spray Shellac with sanding between coats. A gift for Dianne. Be it Gnome that I love you.

  8. I have a home made glue-up panel clamp made from two 3/4" x 18"x 24" plywood panels that have ribs glued to the top and bottom and uses 6 pre-installed bolts to provide a uniform clamping action. This clamp was made to work with my flat pprtrait panels, however I works with thicker items using squeeze clamps. When I cut a pattern out of a blank I drill a hole near the pattern perrimeter so the waste part of the panel remains intact, After cutting the two stacks I glued up the body parts in two glue-ups of 3 and 2, using the intack waste perrimeters to hold the stacks alligned while clamped in the Glue-up clamp. Gluing the two stacks together was a little more difficult to make sure they don't slip, but with the glue-up clamp I can carefully apply the clamping pressure uniformally to prevent any slipage. Simerally, Gluing the body to the bottom was done the same way, but centered basically by eye. Hope this info was helpful. I did a posting about the clamp I made and use, but I cant find it.

Travis, what is causing this error? Several folks have posted a .mov or .mp4 filetype and quite a few of us try to open the file and get this message:

    WEN Scroll Saw users

I was constantly having trouble with the blade clamps on my WEN scroll saw either slipping or completely coming loose when cutting. The original knobs that came on the saw broke within the first couple weeks because I had to "over tighten" just to keep the blades from slipping. I tried roughing the clamping area of the clamps with sandpaper and that helped some but again, the slipping returned. Eventually, having to tightened the clamps so much to try to get them to hold, the threads of the clamp would strip. I started using a regular bolt and a nut driver to tighten the clamps. I made knobs but trying to tighten them by hand was no sufficient enough to hold. The original blade clamps use a M4-.07 bolt/thread. I drilled and tapped a clamp with a #10-24 and made another knob. So far it has been working fine. The coarser thread tightens faster and you don't have to turn and turn and turn to get the clamp to close onto the blade. Clamps can be purchased through WEN for about $5 each. I've ordered a half dozen and will use them until I start having problems with slippage. Then I'll drill and tap to uses with the larger, coarser thread. Hope this helps some of the WEN users. My goal is to upgrade saws sometime in the future but for now, this will have to do.

  11. Our Harry Potter crazy granddaughter is turning 8 next week. I did a Potter portrait and made a compound cut wizard’s wand and stand. The wand and stand were from Al Baggetta patterns. The pattern was another C. Dearing pattern. The wand was cut from African Rosewood, the stand was Zebra wood and Hard Maple.

    Excalibur 21

Hi everyone, just looking on Amazon and they have a brand new Excalibur 21 inch with foot switch for $699. That's a great deal if anyone is looking. I just ordered a new Pegus 21 inch from Denny and I will be selling my Ex 21 pretty soon. Comes with the new blade blocks from Bearwoods and the stand. I also put new knobs and blade screws and new lever, I just put one of those erasable magnetic tops on it to. Asking $500 or best offer. Pick up only or you pay for shipping.

  19. I haven’t quite finished this portrait of Gollum from the Lord Of The Rings,(a Charles Dearing pattern). My backboard has a huge knot in it and I sanded the black off to try to make it look like a pool of water to go with his fish. I haven’t glued it up yet, as I can’t decide whether to leave the knot as is, or black it out. Opinions?

  22. I bought a set for my DeWalt and had pretty much the same problem. The chucks have an inner spindle they ride on that's wider than the chuck and the chuck will slide side to side. I contacted the vender who contacted the maker I believe. They said they would take care of me. I made a set of thin washers from plastic with a set of hole punches, and that fixed the problem for me. It took a long time to get some thing from the makers. I believe they sent me a set of spring or wave washers. I never used them. when my plastic washers wear out I'll go back to the original chucks. They also claim that the chucks weigh less than the originals, I weighed mine and the Pegas chucks are heavier.

Thurman Algernon Irving, Jr. is a very impressive name. I picture someone with a name like that being a bank president. I too, was very surprised when I took to scrolling the way that I did. It's a wonderful, and useful, hobby.

  35. I just finished a Valentine's Day project for my wife from Sue Mey pattern. It's a napkin holder. I added a red 1/8" plexi-glass backer to both sides. It cuts very well with an 80 tooth blade on the table saw and a #2 on the scroll saw. Attached to face piece with CA glue.

  41. Well, I've been working with these chucks now for a few weeks, and I must say... I'm not impressed! I can no longer get a straight up and down cut, it always comes out at an angle. When I set the table angle to be 90 to the blade, what happens is the cut ALWAYS comes out at an angle. I've used 3 methods to confirm the 90: cut a notch into a piece of wood and flip it around to see if the cut fits from behind, a magnetic digital angle gauge, and a small carpenters square. IMO there is way too much adjustment right/left in the chuck adjustment screws and I am unable to get the correct angle to cut a straight up and down cut.Consequently all my puzzle cuts are garbage as they can only be aligned from one side! I have adjusted these heads for hours now and I've given up on them. I put my old heads back on the saw, problem fixed but the noise is back LOL I won't be buying another set!
