Bandida!

I started working on these in the last couple of weeks. I used a combination of scroll saw and Band saw. My Delta wasn't up to cutting these chunks of wood for the body - Had to use the band saw there. I used the scroll saw on the fenders. The truck was the first one I did. It has an ash body and purple heart fenders finished with 4 coats of Formby's tung oil. The convertible is black walnut with cumaru fenders and finished the same as the truck. I have the next 3 cut out just waiting on sanding and assembly. Two black walnut and I believe a red cedar. Here's the pics - Thanks for looking!7 points

Been working on this off an on. Red Oak an Walnut. Finished by dipping in 50/50 BLO. Front blade goes up and down also the blade swivels left an right. Hardest part was making the tracks. You can’t see in pictures but the tracks are guided by wheels. The tracks turn also. Used Pegas MG #5. Used bandsaw to cut groves around the engine cover. 15”x9”x9” pattern from Toys & Joys.7 points

I woke up this AM with a pleasant surprise. SSV was back online! SSV server crashed on Friday, I think. I put in a support ticket Saturday morning. Unfortunately, it was slow to resolve. I kept checking back and they assured me that I was in queue. The longer it went, the more stressed I was. My fear was that it was going to be more to it than a simple fix. But in the end, the support team came through. I'm glad, too, since it was something that I would have never figured out on my own. I guess the moral of the story here is, "Don't have your website break on a 3 day weekend." Anyway, welcome back! We missed you.6 points

How I Justified the Purchase of a Second Scroll Saw
Be_O_Be and one other reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
This is how I justified, first o myself, then second (and more importantly) to my wife Margaret, the purchase of another scroll saw. Almost all my woodwork now involves scroll sawing and, often, I want to have two projects on the go at the same time. Having two saws will make this easier. For instance, I could have one set up with a spiral blade and the other with a conventional blade. The saw that I have decided upon is a Pegas 21 inch: That’s a bit smaller than my old Excalibur EX-30 saw. My current saw was made in nearby Pickering whereas the Pegas is made in far away Taiwan. At least, it’s not China. At its core, the Pegas uses the same engineering as the Excalibur. That engineering was invented by Thomas Summerville, a fellow Scarborough resident, in the early 1980s. My saw was made by his company Summerville Industries but, unfortunately the General company of Drummondville Quebec purchased Summerville in the early 2000s then General went out of business around 2015. Fortunately the design has been adopted by many companies and the Excalibur brand lives on in, at least, one of those companies. Now, after the brief history lesson, lets get back to Pegas. The company is located in Switzerland and they have contracted with the same company in Taiwan that makes the Excalibur and some of its clones. Without altering the basic sawing mechanism designed by Thomas Summerville, the designers of the Pegas have made several improvements. First of all, the arm will stay in the UP position when lifted: With the Excalibur, I need to jam a paint can onto the table towards the back of the arm to keep it in the raised position. I must do this every time that I feed the blade through a hole on the piece I am cutting. Most things that I cut have at least 100 holes and some have had about 1,000. That’s a lot of paint can insertion and removal. Another feature I like is the arms tilts when doing angle cuts: On my Excalibur, the table tilts. Once tilted, it is not easy to manage the piece of wood that one is pushing through the saw. Also the mechanism for tilting my table is primitive and not as accurate as I would like. The mechanism for tilting the arm on the Pegas looks to be quite elaborate and accurate. There are two other features of the Pegas that I have already managed to separately purchase and “cobble” onto my Excalibur. Those are the clamps which hold the blade in place and the hose that blows the sawdust away from the blade. I put those on my saw about two years ago and I have been impressed by both their quality and usefulness. The new blower that I installed on my saw does a good job of keeping sawdust away from the blade but there is nothing to keep the sawdust away from the floor and my lap. In the review photos I have seen, the Pegas can be hooked up to a shop vac and that combination does a very good job of collecting the dust. I contacted Rod Sheridan (who works part time for Felder/Hammer) and told him that I have never used my Hammer Shaper as a one should really use a shaper, only as a high priced router table and that I saw no likelihood that I would ever do so. He said that he would see if he can find a buyer for it. If I sell the shaper, it will cover away more than the cost of the new scroll-saw.2 points -
Cat Statue
frankorona and one other reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I purchased a set of three Cat statue patterns from Richard Myrchak I found on Pinterest. I modified this one slightly to resize it to 7” wide x 14” tall and added tenons for mounting into the base. This piece is cut from 3/4” thick Maple. Cutting was done using Pegas # 5 skip tooth blade. I tapered the perimeter of the base about 6 degrees. I use a small cove bit in my table mounted router to ease/round over all edges. I applied a coat of Lacquer Sanding Sealer then sanded using my Dremel and lots of hand sanding (I don’t have a spindle sander which would make this kind of project much easier). Finish is multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer. I’m thinking I may cut this pattern again, using a less expensive piece of wood (maybe Poplar), and finish it with High Gloss Black Lacquer. Comments and critique always welcome.2 points -
My version of Dave Monk’s ‘Box for Valentines Day’
frankorona and one other reacted to FrankEV for a topic
Back on January 24th, Dave Monk posted “Box for Valentines Day’ (https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/45253-box-for-valentines-day/) made from Maple and Padauk. I liked the box and asked him if he would share his pattern so I could make one for my lady, which he graciously did. A big Thank You to Dave. I did not have the necessary Maple and Padauk wood on hand and decided to order it from Ocooh. Delivery took some time and other priorities intervened, so I got a late start and had to tell her that her Valentines present would be late. Well, I got it started and the lacquer finish is drying as I write this. So, she will get it tomorrow, Valentines day. I modified Dave’s pattern slightly. My box is cut from blanks that were 8” square so the box is about 7 ½” tall by 7 ½” wide. I also decided to use five 3/8” layers (Padauk, Maple, Padauk, Maple, Padauk) which made my box 1 7/8” deep, allowing me to cut two stacks, a 3 and a 2. I use 1/2” Maple for the top and Bottom. The Top inset Heart detail was made from a stack of cut-outs from the body (Padauk, Maple, Maple) which produced a 1 1/8” glued up stack. When I cut the opening in the top for the Heart detail I undercut it slightly and sanded it to get a nice tight fit. The glued in inset piece projects 3/8” below the Top to act as a stopper for the Top into the Body and 1/4"above the top to provide the raised Heart detail. Dave has the advantage of having a Band Saw and a spindle sander which I do not have room for in my tiny shop. I eased all the edges with a round over bit in my Router and did all my sanding using my Dremel and a lot by hand. That is where I ran into some difficulty. Not the sanding but with the Padauk dust!!!! The Padauk sanding dust acks like a stain when it gets on the Maple. You just cannot wipe it off clean with a tack cloth. I even applied a coat of Lacquer Sanding Sealer to try and control the staining, but It did not really do the job. Like Dave, I finished the box with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer and added a Red Felt to the box bottom. I like the way it came out, but not happy with the Red staind on some of the Maple. Lacquer drys fast so I was able to sneek and take these pic's before she gets to see it. As always comments and critique is welcome. EDIT 2/14/22: My lady was very happy!!!!2 points -

Super Bowl Plaque
Eric67 reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My 56 year old son has been a Rams football fan since he was in grade school. I, personally am not interested much in sports, it takes away my shop time. Since this was the year that the Rams were playing for another Super Bowl championship, I thought I would make him a winner plaque for his sports room. He told me about the new rams logo and he, personally, liked it, I thought I would make and effort to incorporate it in his plaque. This is the results of my effort at designing and making this plaque for him. I did not make this frame, as I just did not have the time to make one, so I used one that I purchased at a garage sale a while back Dick heppnerguy1 point -

I have used it. After watching Travis! It works for quick, easy pieces. Sometimes quick and easy is the best solution.1 point -
I made a video on using that a few years back. I don't use it all of the time, but it sure works great!1 point

It was time. I don't have much room in my shop but I made room for this. The system still isn't complete yet, not easy trying to find all the needed pipe, fittings, hoses, etc. But I'll make it work. I'm gonna try it first without having a second stage due to limited space and see how often I need to empty the bag. Once it is all put together I'll post some more pics.1 point

How I Justified the Purchase of a Second Scroll Saw
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Nice! Having 2 saws is a luxury that my shop space just won't allow. I strongly considered it when I bought my EX-21 back in 2015/2016. I had a DeWalt that I liked very much and really tried to figure out a way to keep it. Just couldn't find the floor or bench space for it, so I eventually sold it. As for my EX-21, it pre-dates the move to Chinese manufacturing, but includes the tilting head feature, which I really like. I suspect that other than the color and the blade clamps, it's virtually the same saw as the Pegas. I bought the Excalibur, because my DeWalt shared DNA with it. I was already very accustomed to how the DeWalt worked and really didn't want to go through the learning curve of getting a new saw, of a different design. All these years later, I still think I made the right decision. Good luck with the new Pegas. Let us know what you think of it, once you've had a chance to make some sawdust with it.1 point -

By all means take it off BUT DO NOT TOSS IT. Should you have to return it because it dies you will need to put it back on. Some companies void the warranty if you make any changes to the original.1 point -

Our Harry Potter crazy granddaughter is turning 8 next week. I did a Potter portrait and made a compound cut wizard’s wand and stand. The wand and stand were from Al Baggetta patterns. The pattern was another C. Dearing pattern. The wand was cut from African Rosewood, the stand was Zebra wood and Hard Maple.1 point -
