    Easter 2022

Just a reminder. Easter this year is on April 17, so if you are wanting to make some special gifts for the season, it might be time to begin thinking about getting something on the saw. While there are many patterns available here in the Village, here are a few patterns you might like. I will be doing these again this season in stacks to give to friends and family. But as I look at them, I had better get busy. Be well all and God Bless.

    SSV Is Back Online!

I woke up this AM with a pleasant surprise. SSV was back online! SSV server crashed on Friday, I think. I put in a support ticket Saturday morning. Unfortunately, it was slow to resolve. I kept checking back and they assured me that I was in queue. The longer it went, the more stressed I was. My fear was that it was going to be more to it than a simple fix. But in the end, the support team came through. I'm glad, too, since it was something that I would have never figured out on my own. I guess the moral of the story here is, "Don't have your website break on a 3 day weekend." Anyway, welcome back! We missed you.

It's been a long time since I've posted. Hard to get much time in the shop with a full time job and two little ones in the house. But I was able to get this pattern by Javenski completed here recently. Definitely enjoyed getting back to the saw!!!

  11. I was inspired to make this project by seeing a cowboy hat made by a lathe. This is a wearable cowboy hat. I thought that this was a bit of a challenge so I expected some re-dos. I did have some oopses but was able to recover from them. Since I have done bowls before, I thought just maybe I could do it. A hat's crown is the same basic shape. Just add a thin top, and a big thin wide brim. And "how to bend" wood. Oh crap ! I had to learn that and hope it came out okay. I bought thin project ready stock from Cherokee woods, 1/8 " thick. Then added 3/4" thick 10"x 24" board for bowl / crown. This is maple wood. So I cut a maple leaf topper using 45 deg table tilt. I have lots of pictures during the making of this Maple Cowboy Hat. But for now I will attach 5. This hat conforms to my head. I bought a drafting curve tool 30" and wrapped it around my head. Then traced it on paper and scanned into computer. With inkscape I created a curve path and made my head shape. With the "linked offset" tool I made 8 lines with 1/8" offset. This is my pattern. The 3rd picture shows 2 rings cut and the pattern. Yes I have an eggshaped head. I have about 20 hours into the project. Ok that was the intro. I did have inspiration from: OCTOOLGUY Dave Monk Also Ruth Niles from Niles bottle stoppers. Youtube "wooden cowboy hats". There is a song from Chris LeDoux named "This Cowboy Hat". I was so inspired by this project, I thought I could change the words to the song. If you are interest in a personal message of new words to the song. I can provide that. The last pic shows a quick small prototype / test, I did before I started this project. Small test used 1/4" baltic birch plywood. Me. Mark Eason

I do enjoy the challenge and do not see it much different that cutting very intricate fretwork designs. I actually use some small things like the reindeer to enhance some Christmas ornaments. I have given away a few of these and are very well received.

On another woodworking forum that I frequent, there used to be a fellow who was pretty good on a lathe. He would turn tiny goblets & such, just for the challenge and the cool factor. As for the tiny deer, I've seen them made into jewelry; earrings, pins, charms, etc. People love them.

    New pegas 21

I wasn't going to mention this at all but I felt I had to because of the great service with Denny and Grobet. I went to use my saw for the first time and I got knocking when I tried to raise the speed. Gave Denny a call so he could listen to it and told me to contact Grobet and he would do the same. Well I heard back from them the same day and later that night, Matt called me on facetime to go over the problem. He listened to the knocking and had me try different things to do with no success. After about an hour he decided to call it quits and he would talk to someone in the morning about the problem. Long story short, they will be sending me a new saw. Just want to thank Denny and the company that stands behind their product. That's all folks.

I'm sure there are...and I hope they are all alright and as unaffected as possible. I mentioned Alex as he's the only one I've interacted with in that area. I like and have made several of his small jewelry box design, my wife grabbed the first one.

  35. In the photos and the video you saw 4mm birch plywood. You can choose between 1/8 inch and 4 mm (not 1/4 inch). Firstly I made pattern for 4 mm (it is popular thickness of plywood in European countries). But USA use inches, so I had to made one more variant, as I know 1/8 and 1/4 are popular thickness, 1/4 was too thick, so I made 1/8.

  40. This is how I justified, first o myself, then second (and more importantly) to my wife Margaret, the purchase of another scroll saw. Almost all my woodwork now involves scroll sawing and, often, I want to have two projects on the go at the same time. Having two saws will make this easier. For instance, I could have one set up with a spiral blade and the other with a conventional blade. The saw that I have decided upon is a Pegas 21 inch: That’s a bit smaller than my old Excalibur EX-30 saw. My current saw was made in nearby Pickering whereas the Pegas is made in far away Taiwan. At least, it’s not China. At its core, the Pegas uses the same engineering as the Excalibur. That engineering was invented by Thomas Summerville, a fellow Scarborough resident, in the early 1980s. My saw was made by his company Summerville Industries but, unfortunately the General company of Drummondville Quebec purchased Summerville in the early 2000s then General went out of business around 2015. Fortunately the design has been adopted by many companies and the Excalibur brand lives on in, at least, one of those companies. Now, after the brief history lesson, lets get back to Pegas. The company is located in Switzerland and they have contracted with the same company in Taiwan that makes the Excalibur and some of its clones. Without altering the basic sawing mechanism designed by Thomas Summerville, the designers of the Pegas have made several improvements. First of all, the arm will stay in the UP position when lifted: With the Excalibur, I need to jam a paint can onto the table towards the back of the arm to keep it in the raised position. I must do this every time that I feed the blade through a hole on the piece I am cutting. Most things that I cut have at least 100 holes and some have had about 1,000. That’s a lot of paint can insertion and removal. Another feature I like is the arms tilts when doing angle cuts: On my Excalibur, the table tilts. Once tilted, it is not easy to manage the piece of wood that one is pushing through the saw. Also the mechanism for tilting my table is primitive and not as accurate as I would like. The mechanism for tilting the arm on the Pegas looks to be quite elaborate and accurate. There are two other features of the Pegas that I have already managed to separately purchase and “cobble” onto my Excalibur. Those are the clamps which hold the blade in place and the hose that blows the sawdust away from the blade. I put those on my saw about two years ago and I have been impressed by both their quality and usefulness. The new blower that I installed on my saw does a good job of keeping sawdust away from the blade but there is nothing to keep the sawdust away from the floor and my lap. In the review photos I have seen, the Pegas can be hooked up to a shop vac and that combination does a very good job of collecting the dust. I contacted Rod Sheridan (who works part time for Felder/Hammer) and told him that I have never used my Hammer Shaper as a one should really use a shaper, only as a high priced router table and that I saw no likelihood that I would ever do so. He said that he would see if he can find a buyer for it. If I sell the shaper, it will cover away more than the cost of the new scroll-saw.

  47. Sorry about this folks but Scrimperuk has now morphed into scrimper. Unfortunately I am a bit dopey, I thought I already had an account here but could not find any record of it so I joined up as scrimperuk. once a member I looked at the members map and surprise there was scrimper listed as a member and of course it was me. I could not access the scrimper account but I contacted admin and Travis has very kindly amalgamated me with the scrimper account. It all sounds very complicated but basically if you see reference here as scrimper or scrimperuk it's me. So sorry for a second introduction, actually I think it's my third!

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

I've been thinking of Alex Fox in the last few days and weeks. I've tried to contact him to see if he's OK, but no response so far. Has anyone heard from him in the last day or so? He's in Kherson Ukraine I believe, unless he's moved, and I think Russian forces have moved through there in the last few hours.

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

Just got a message from Alex. As many of us use his patterns, I'll post it. Things getting real there. "Hi, I am from Kherson town (center of Kherson region), this region borders with Crimea. Russian militaries already crossed the border and occupied nearest to border towns. Some time ago I heard explosions - my friends who live in the suburbs of Kherson town say that now is fighting at the entrance to the town. I am really scared."
