    Is Alex Fox Safe?

I do not know Anatoly but hope he and family are safe. He looks to be around the next bridge upriver from Kherson. Just heard from Alex a few minutes ago. He said the Russians broke through the defenses of Kherson and took the bridge but did not enter the city. They went further to Nikolaev, although the translation may actually be Mykolaiv. Anyway, he and his family are safe for the moment, it's quiet now and about midnight.

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

I saw this posted by Charles Hand on Facebook about 8:00 AM EST. "I spoke with my friend Alex Fox (scroll saw designer and artist) in the Ukraine yesterday morning and again this morning. So much fear there now as the Russian army is on the outskirts of his town Kherson. For the scroll saw community who might know Alex, your thoughts, support and prayers would be very much appreciated at this time, that he, his family and countrymen stay safe."

  6. Just finished cutting and framing another great pattern by Jim Blume, '' Leopard, Who Goes There " Not as intricate as the first one I cut, ''Wagon Wheels" , but It was an interesting pattern to cut , having many sharp inside and outside cuts. I was able to resize the pattern to 10" x 10" and print it on my printer on 2 sheets of paper after after following a tutorial by Travis on " How to print oversize patterns with Inkscape". Thanks for the pattern Jim Blum, I'm sure I will be downloading and cutting more of your fine patterns. beaver

  7. I was inspired to make this project by seeing a cowboy hat made by a lathe. This is a wearable cowboy hat. I thought that this was a bit of a challenge so I expected some re-dos. I did have some oopses but was able to recover from them. Since I have done bowls before, I thought just maybe I could do it. A hat's crown is the same basic shape. Just add a thin top, and a big thin wide brim. And "how to bend" wood. Oh crap ! I had to learn that and hope it came out okay. I bought thin project ready stock from Cherokee woods, 1/8 " thick. Then added 3/4" thick 10"x 24" board for bowl / crown. This is maple wood. So I cut a maple leaf topper using 45 deg table tilt. I have lots of pictures during the making of this Maple Cowboy Hat. But for now I will attach 5. This hat conforms to my head. I bought a drafting curve tool 30" and wrapped it around my head. Then traced it on paper and scanned into computer. With inkscape I created a curve path and made my head shape. With the "linked offset" tool I made 8 lines with 1/8" offset. This is my pattern. The 3rd picture shows 2 rings cut and the pattern. Yes I have an eggshaped head. I have about 20 hours into the project. Ok that was the intro. I did have inspiration from: OCTOOLGUY Dave Monk Also Ruth Niles from Niles bottle stoppers. Youtube "wooden cowboy hats". There is a song from Chris LeDoux named "This Cowboy Hat". I was so inspired by this project, I thought I could change the words to the song. If you are interest in a personal message of new words to the song. I can provide that. The last pic shows a quick small prototype / test, I did before I started this project. Small test used 1/4" baltic birch plywood. Me. Mark Eason

  8. Any recommendations for a design of a scroll saw table or pedestal? I currently have my saw on my custom made build table but this requires standing at the saw and trying to manipulate the foot operated on/off switch. Searching the web I found a couple of tables that allow sitting at the saw (my recommendation). I also noticed many designs allow the saw itself to be angled downward to prevent neck strain. I’m new at the scroll saw and have only been using it for about 10 hours but a sitting solution appears to be the answer.

  9. This plan has been mentioned by a number of people in other social media sites. I think Steve Good even mentions it. https://www.etsy.com/listing/398074303/scroll-saw-stand-woodworking-plans?ref=shop_home_active_1

    Freaky Fords

I started working on these in the last couple of weeks. I used a combination of scroll saw and Band saw. My Delta wasn't up to cutting these chunks of wood for the body - Had to use the band saw there. I used the scroll saw on the fenders. The truck was the first one I did. It has an ash body and purple heart fenders finished with 4 coats of Formby's tung oil. The convertible is black walnut with cumaru fenders and finished the same as the truck. I have the next 3 cut out just waiting on sanding and assembly. Two black walnut and I believe a red cedar. Here's the pics - Thanks for looking!

    Freaky Ford III

Just finished this one today. It's a Freaky Ford Panel Truck. The body is make of black walnut and the fenders are spalted ash. It was finished with Watco Danish oil with a coat of paste wax and then buffed out using my drill press. I've been experimenting with different woods and finishes. I like this combination a lot! Next up is a coupe with a red cedar body and mahogany fenders - not sure what the finish will be.

    Super Bowl Plaque

My 56 year old son has been a Rams football fan since he was in grade school. I, personally am not interested much in sports, it takes away my shop time. Since this was the year that the Rams were playing for another Super Bowl championship, I thought I would make him a winner plaque for his sports room. He told me about the new rams logo and he, personally, liked it, I thought I would make and effort to incorporate it in his plaque. This is the results of my effort at designing and making this plaque for him. I did not make this frame, as I just did not have the time to make one, so I used one that I purchased at a garage sale a while back Dick heppnerguy

  17. Here is the work bench hubby made for me. i use a bar stool for sitting plus I have the option of standing if I wish. It has three tilt setting and a shelf below for misc. He measured my saw for the top the saw is bolted to. Works like a charm for me. Made it out of lumber he had on hand. Hope this helps.

  22. My new pattern and project. "Cutest key hanger" - I hear when someone see it for the first time, it has kinetic mechanism, when you hang keys - cat (dog) appears from the box. Project size 2 x 2 x 4 inches. Watch the video, it shows how it works and full assembling. Video of assembling Key Hanger Key Hanger pattern

  23. I have 2 Excaliburs that I built low tables that are moveable. Each one has 2 7" wheels at the back end opposite from where I sit. I have incorporated a couple of pieces of PVC that slide inside of each other to make wheelbarrow type handles to move the saws around. When not needed the smaller PVC slides inside of the larger PVC. Each saw has it's own onboard dust control system using MetroVac 500 vacuums and mini cyclone dust collectors. All in all, they work out great. There are plans out there but I like mine better. Good luck with whatever you come up with.

It's been a long time since I've posted. Hard to get much time in the shop with a full time job and two little ones in the house. But I was able to get this pattern by Javenski completed here recently. Definitely enjoyed getting back to the saw!!!

    Freaky Ford III

Very cute! I was tempted to buy those patterns (https://toymakingplans.com/fat-fendered-freaky-fords) because my grandson is a car fanatic but, I have made him so many wooden cars and he owns so many die cast cars that I passed on buying these patterns. You did an excellent job. Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse

  28. I found the a bar stool height is good for sitting. I have used mine for many years. My saw table is normal height and the plans were published in wood magazine. Can't remember which issue but will look if you wish. I did shorten the legs about 2 inches and use a foot control.

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

Just got a message from Alex. As many of us use his patterns, I'll post it. Things getting real there. "Hi, I am from Kherson town (center of Kherson region), this region borders with Crimea. Russian militaries already crossed the border and occupied nearest to border towns. Some time ago I heard explosions - my friends who live in the suburbs of Kherson town say that now is fighting at the entrance to the town. I am really scared."

Barry - the plans are from ToymakingPlans.com. The cost was about $15 for the set of 5 plans. Dick - I haven't put them in the hands of little ones yet but they appear to be pretty sturdy! BTW - here's another vehicle I completed today. I call it the "Carrotmobile"! Put together and finished in less than 2 days. I used 1/2" plywood for the body and 1/4" for the rabbit. I plan on using them as Easter presents.

    FINALLY

I finally got this downloaded so I could post it. This pattern came from the pattern library here and the maker of the pattern in "Shady Lady". I showed it to my wife and she wanted me to cut it for one of our grandkids, so here it is. This is the second one of this frame I have made and I think by the next one, I should get it right, I hope. I cut this on 1/4 in BB Birch ply and made the frame from aspen and purple heart. I enjoyed cutting it and this one I am happy enough at the finished results. Dick heppnerguy

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

Besides Alex, many of you may be familiar with the work and patterns of Anatoly Obelets. He has been published I believe a couple of times recently in the Scroll Saw and Woodworking magazine. He is also in Ukraine. Here is the most recent information I have seen on him. The posts are from the Facebook group “Intarsia Nuts”. The first one was from Feb. 22 and the second is from just about 23 hours ago on Feb. 24. My prayers continue for their safety in Ukraine.
