Freaky Ford IV
Norm Fengstad and 9 others reacted to Jaguarguy for a topic
Just finished this one today! When I first started this one, I believed the wood was red cedar or red oak. Upon finishing it, I think now that it may actually be cherry. The wood had some worm holes with I left - kind of remind me of rust spots on the car. The fenders are brazilian cherry. The car was finished with 4 coats of Formby's Tung Oil. Here's the pics of it along with the last pic that shows the 4 Fords that I have completed so far. One more to go in the series.10 points -

The last CD Volume 6 covers Holiday 2015 - Fall 2018 Issues 61-72 I see that https://www.feinschnitt-kreativ.de/ has already been mentioned. I subscribed fairly recently. I can still read German. Frank for the cover price of $8, I think that is probably less than a burger at Mc Donalds. You get a lot of different projects and ideas. Scott, nice job on that Nativity! I have made a couple of those, they are very popular. I modified the design a bit by making the background larger. The other nativity was also from Feinschnitt. I also modified that design to reduce and combine some layers.3 points -
Is Alex Fox Safe?
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
Posted by Charles Hand this morning: "Scroll saw friends. This is the latest (7:00 AM ET) from our friend Alex Fox in Kherson, Ukraine. "Now Russians are all over the city, all shops, pharmacies are closed, there are no civilians on the streets, no one leaves their houses. Our mayor made a statement that the administration is working, the life support of the city (gas, water, electricity, the Internet) is working. No one from the Russian military addressed him, the flag on the main square is Ukrainian. It turns out that after the fighting, the Russians drove into the city and are probably waiting for further instructions.""3 points -

Found a pic online and used it for a pattern. About 8"x11", BBply. Not sure if I will put a backer on it or leave it open. It will sit next to a Flag that I just finished making and both will sit on the outdoor fireplace mantel. The Flag is approx. 9"x 17". Included pics of with and without a backer.2 points

Hi everyone, just want to let you all know that I received my new replacement saw today. All hooked up and runs great so far. No knocking in this one. I want to thank Denny again for great service and Patti from Pegas who got the ball rolling. They shipped mine out Monday and I got it today. Great service so far.2 points -
I made a mistake, part 2 (see part 1 under "Other Woodworks") Last year, in discussions in this forum about dust collection, we talked about vacuum cleaners for dust collection. Per the discussions, I installed a small Oreck vacuum cleaner for use with my scroll saw. I cleverly (or so I thought) wired it to turn off and on with the foot switch which also powered my scroll saw. The vacuum cleaner soon died and wound up in the trash bin. I now have another Oreck dedicated to my scroll saw, not wired to my foot switch. I turn this one on when I sit down at my scroll saw and turn it off when I leave the station. The first one lasted a few months and this one is now going on a year. Conclusion: Vacuum cleaners (Orecks, cannot say about any other brands) are not designed for frequent turning on and off.1 point

Just finished cutting and framing another great pattern by Jim Blume, '' Leopard, Who Goes There " Not as intricate as the first one I cut, ''Wagon Wheels" , but It was an interesting pattern to cut , having many sharp inside and outside cuts. I was able to resize the pattern to 10" x 10" and print it on my printer on 2 sheets of paper after after following a tutorial by Travis on " How to print oversize patterns with Inkscape". Thanks for the pattern Jim Blum, I'm sure I will be downloading and cutting more of your fine patterns. beaver1 point

My BIL passed away last March and I asked for a pattern to be made. Grandpa made me one that was really cool looking. I started cutting it last June and finally finished it a few weeks ago. Longest time ever cutting out a pattern for me! Only cut a few lines at a time, eyes kept filling up each time I would start cutting,, hard to see the lines with tears in your eyes.. LOL. Grandpa had some very detailed wheels in the pattern and I knew that I would deviated a bit when cutting them. By not cutting this pattern out in one sitting, I messed up on the wheels, front doesn't match the rear. Not a very good cut overall but it is for me and not for display. Thanks again for the pattern Grandpa! Btw,, Muscovy was his CB handle in the 70's and 80's.1 point

I made a mistake
scrollingforsanity reacted to CharleyL for a topic
I use a re-purposed whole house vacuum cleaner, installed with inlets in several places in my shop, upstairs in the shop attic, and one to the outside next to the passage door, for vacuuming my cars and trucks. Between the piping and the vacuum is a Dust Deputy with a repurposed 25 gallon grease barrel below it. I use it for all of my fine sawdust producers, the sanders, scroll saws, drill presses, etc. and for vacuuming much of the floor. My shop is too small for a real shop dust collector, so the chip producers and table saw get shoveled out with a small shovel frequently. I'm more concerned with the fine dust getting into my lungs anyway. The vacuum is located upstairs and the exhaust from the central vac exits just below the roof soffit, so the dust collected never gets back in my shop if it should somehow get through the Dust Deputy and vacuum. Since adding the Dust Deputy, there is nothing but a trace of micro fine dust inside the vacuum. It's all in the 25 gallon drum. Since I'm not in the shop every day, I can go about a year before needing to dump the barrel. I do my planning with a DeWalt 735, outside in the driveway, using the original hose and barrel cover that was once available for the 735, and I found a 60 gallon plastic barrel with an open end that I collect the chips in. It resides upside down behind my shop when not being used. Charley1 point -

My current DIY dust collector runs off of a whole-home central vac motor. Its connected to a treadmill controller so its variable speed DC rather than single speed AC. Aside from its a bit loud as its a universal type motor, but it works great. My next will be based on a DIY impeller and washing machine motor - hopefully I can salvage a 3 speed; this will be MUCH quieter. Look up some of Matthias Wandel's youtube vids. He has made many DIY dust collectors. They take a bit of work but can be customized to the exact application.1 point -

Thanks Rolf for giving that info on the last CD covering through Issue 72, Fall, 2018. I thought it was 2019 or 2018 but couldn’t recall off the top of my head and I confess I let my lazy side win on this one. I have also purchased a couple of issues of the german magazine, I think after you and/or Scott had shared about it I think with that nativity pattern. I also think I still need to make that one.1 point

The content in recent issues is a good bit different than the content from say 10 years ago. I let my subscription expire because issues over the past couple of years had very little that interested me. I've saved all of my old issues, because they still have a number of patterns I may want to cut someday. I could probably toss most of the issues from the last few years. I won't, but I probably could.1 point -

Even if the Rand is at 21 to the GBP my saw was only R1050 and even today that would be about the correct price for a Lidl or Aldi saw. I think at the bottom end " you pays your money and you takes your chance". Import duty etc. is another bone of contention that we have to live with.1 point -

I sorted a bunch of patterns from the New Patterns section. I created a new album called Pets for our furry little family members. I pulled out all of the dogs, cats, horses, and other pets from the Animals section and put them there.1 point

Frank, there is not. Each of those 6 CDs have a couple or so years on them. They do not have the last few years out yet. (I forget what the last one covers through.) Besides Buying physical back issues of the magazines (if available, not all issues are) this is the only way to obtain the issues and patterns.1 point

There is only one magazine for scrollers that I know of. Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts. https://scrollsawer.com/ Also, you can get issues 1 - 72 on CD. Worth it as patterns can be accessed by computer versus scan and print. https://www.foxchapelpublishing.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?_q=croll+Saw+Woodworking+%26+Crafts+Archive+CD&f=scroll+saw+woodworking+%26+crafts+archive+cd&q=scroll+saw+woodworking++crafts+archive+cd There used to be Creative Woodworks and Crafts. Long gone but you can sometimes pick up old issues on Etsy and eBay.1 point -
Interesting and informative discussion. FWIW, my first vacuum cleaner was completely dead, no funny noises, no slowing down, or such. Suddenly one day, it quit. I think Charley and Scott might have diagnosed what happened and have the answer. The problem is that I can get perfectly good used Oreck vacuum cleaners of the type I am using off eBay for around $25 and it is cheaper to just replace the vacuum cleaner as needed. That leaves more $ for other scrolling toys/tools, wood, patterns, etc.1 point

I do inlay with my scroll saw and sit at my saw for hours at a time every day. I tried using shop vac for dust removal running all te time, and it worked well but I killed three shop vacs doing that. Two used and one new. Killed them all. Seems they are not designed to run for hours at a time.1 point
