  2. I have volunteered to do a series of sessions on scrolling. With the members who have never scrolled - I first discuss the basics of patterns, blades and basic techniques and then get into cutting techniques. I have the basic template below which does all the corners etc. They will get 2 key chains (cat and bear). 1. I would appreciate any comments on the template. 2. Then - I need a basic project to do that would be a good take home project. I tried to do a keychains with their name and it was too difficult for some of the students. Probably have about 1/2 hour or so to devote to section. I will glue up some extra small stuff for the real keeners. (Always happens) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The last CD Volume 6 covers Holiday 2015 - Fall 2018 Issues 61-72 I see that https://www.feinschnitt-kreativ.de/ has already been mentioned. I subscribed fairly recently. I can still read German. Frank for the cover price of $8, I think that is probably less than a burger at Mc Donalds. You get a lot of different projects and ideas. Scott, nice job on that Nativity! I have made a couple of those, they are very popular. I modified the design a bit by making the background larger. The other nativity was also from Feinschnitt. I also modified that design to reduce and combine some layers.

I like to start with simple silhouettes sometimes turning them in to simple puzzles. Another thing that often goes over well is letters or simple wordart. When working with my students I find that sparking a desire to make a project can be far more helpful than tons of random practice.

Found a pic online and used it for a pattern. About 8"x11", BBply. Not sure if I will put a backer on it or leave it open. It will sit next to a Flag that I just finished making and both will sit on the outdoor fireplace mantel. The Flag is approx. 9"x 17". Included pics of with and without a backer.

  7. Not sure about other places, but in the US, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) to celebrate our Irish heritage. It's mostly an excuse to drink green beer and eat boiled meats. I thought it might be fun to do a scroll saw challenge around "The Luck Of The Irish." This one is pretty open to interpretation. You can do a St. Paddies day theme, something Irish or Celtic themed, luck, green, etc. It'll be fun to see what you come up with.

Templates look great and its a cool idea. i am sure they wil learn a lot. be sure to go over the different way to attach the pattern to the wood as that is always an area people have questions about.

It's great that you are doing this Don! Some of that cutting looks quite difficult for beginners and I would save those for a second lesson. I would have them practicing on more lines. For a project, I suggest a simple puzzle.

I still like to use lesson one in Scroll Saw Workbook 2 nd edition by John A Nelson. Your project ideas are great.

Thanks for doing this. I remember first starting out and it was tough to follow a line. I first practiced by following various lines starting with gentle curves and gradually going to sharper turns and eventually square corners. I think the snowflake maybe too difficult for a beginner. Along with patterns,it might be good to suggest various woods or blades to use. One of the biggest questions from newbie is what blade to use.

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

Alex had posted on a facebook feed that I saw yesterday. He said they were safe at that time and were donating some of the money from his Etsy site to a charitable organization. Of course I can't find that posting now.

I guess I am the lucky one I still have the CWCM issues from 2000 to the last one before they went out of business.

The content in recent issues is a good bit different than the content from say 10 years ago. I let my subscription expire because issues over the past couple of years had very little that interested me. I've saved all of my old issues, because they still have a number of patterns I may want to cut someday. I could probably toss most of the issues from the last few years. I won't, but I probably could.

    Gnomes

Very nice Marg. As an aside, Quite a few years ago somebody knocked of a gnome from a person's front yard here in Kalgoorlie. They then took the little bloke on a holiday all around Australia, posting back photo's of the gnome at various locations. If I remember correctly, after about 6 months he turned up on his owners front door holding a tiny suit case.

    Pattern Library - Pets

I sorted a bunch of patterns from the New Patterns section. I created a new album called Pets for our furry little family members. I pulled out all of the dogs, cats, horses, and other pets from the Animals section and put them there.

  25. I thank everyone for who liked my post and those who posted their congratulations and good wishes. I now have the foot-pedal and the lighted magnifying lens. I am still trying to find a reducing connector between my Festool vacuum and the dust port. With most of my set-up complete, it was time to start sawing. Here is a photo of the very first cut on this machine: The project that I am sawing is appropriate because the two people in that photo (myself and my grandson Ethan) are the only two people that ever used my old EX-30 scroll-saw. My preliminary report based on only one short cut is that the saw is quiet, solid, steady, and accurate. I realized too late that the blade I used was not a Pegas. It was a Flying Dutchman #1 Spiral with Flat Ends. Oh well, I do plan to be using Pegas #0 and #2/0 blades for the majority of the sawing on this piece.

  26. This is a box I made from a bit of scrap walnut. The box is 2 1/2” X 2 1/2” X 1 1/2”. made from one inch walnut with 1/4” walnut top and bottom. I flocked the inside. It will hold the necklace.

  27. I made this for my wife for valentines day a few years ago. It's a band saw box cut solely on my scroll saw.

Scott, that is most of what Alex sent me about an hour ago. Nothing else to add at this time. I would think the next on the list would be to take Odesa. Shutting off Ukraine from all seaports would be even worse.

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

Posted by Charles Hand this morning: "Scroll saw friends. This is the latest (7:00 AM ET) from our friend Alex Fox in Kherson, Ukraine. "Now Russians are all over the city, all shops, pharmacies are closed, there are no civilians on the streets, no one leaves their houses. Our mayor made a statement that the administration is working, the life support of the city (gas, water, electricity, the Internet) is working. No one from the Russian military addressed him, the flag on the main square is Ukrainian. It turns out that after the fighting, the Russians drove into the city and are probably waiting for further instructions.""

    Is Alex Fox Safe?

I've bought 3-4 more Alex patterns last day or two. Told him that I hope he can still get paid. Just got a message from Alex about an hour ago...sounds like things are going downhill fast in his neighborhood (Kherson). It's getting late over there so I probably won't hear anything till tomorrow. I pray for the safety of him and his family. Hi, The Russians occupied Kherson and entered the city, including heavy equipment (tanks, armored personnel carriers). All entrances and exits in the city are blocked, during the last shelling, some rockets hit residential buildings, I don’t know if there were casualties. There was a fire in the largest mall in Kherson (I don’t know whether it was arson or a rocket hit), but when the fire truck arrived, they fired at it, the firemen managed to escape. In general, the situation is very complicated.
