  2. Working a few minutes here and a few there, I was finally able to finish Jim Blume's Americana 6. The cutting is on 1/4 maple finished with natural with a pine black backing. I sprayed several coats of clear with light sanding between each coat. The frame is pine finished with antique oak stain. This is the third I've done in this series with hopes to complete them all. Thanks, Jim, for the fantastic patterns.

  3. Frank, That is great that you can get new items. They make a lot of dust fast. The shop vac port helps alot but does not suck all the dust from top part of the spindle. Also a sandpaper eraser from harbor freight helps alot to clean the spindles. see attach pic. The big diameter spindles will grab pieces and send them flying. But you wont have to go far to get them.

    Saw Stand

I believe this is what he was referring to. I'm intrigued by this ans I know some dining room tables use this and they're pretty stable. Have to think on this.

  7. A few of my recent post in Bragging Rights were of some solid wood projects. There was the Heart Box, the Cat, and most recently the Kokopelli Band. In comments back and forth specifically regarding the Heart Box, some were amazed that I did most of the sanding using my Dremel plus a lot of hand sanding and that I did not have or use a spindle sander. My shop is very tiny and bench type Spindle Sanders are quite large and I just do not have the room to add one to my shop…at least that is what I thought. Doing a lot of research, I found that Tritan and Wen both make a small portable unit intended for handheld operation. Both are orange and look almost identical with the only apparent difference between the two is the name and price tag. The Tritan sells for over $150 while I was able to purchase the Wen on Amazon for under $50. Although both are designed for handheld operation, both offer a set of L-bolts that allows it to be clamped to a bench in a spindle-up position. The base/worktable of the unit is quite small, but I think it will be adequate for the type of projects I will be making. Rockler offers a plate that can be mounted to make a larger table, but I’m not sure if it will be needed. I was able to mount the unit to my already existing Sanding Station, so it does not take up any additional shop space. Here are some pics.

  8. Hi everyone, just thought I would show you a couple of pieces I just did on my new Pagas 21 from Denny. So far it runs great and is very quiet. These are Steve Good Patterns. The flower stand chair isn't sanded or glued yet ,so you might see some fuzzies. I just put it together to see if everything fits. Now I'll go sand it and paint it white.

    Kokopelli Band

I needed a fourth statue to fill an open box in the cabinet next to my desk and have been meaning to cut a Kokopelli for a long time. I have a few different Kokopelli patterns on file, but for this Statue I needed something different. I did find many images on-line and did use two different Kokopelli images I found, to use for the basic outline. However, I added my own designs and put two together to form this Statue I call Kokopellie Band. My final version is 13” tall and 11” wide cut from ¾” Red Oak. I added tenons to the feet of the statues that fit into mortises in the Base. I used my table saw to make the tenons about a half a blade width narrower than the ¾” thickness of the statue. Cutting was relatively easy and done with Pegas #5 MGT blades. The base is about a 3 ½” wide x 11” long x ¾” thick oval with about a four-degree perimeter bevel all around eased at the top with a small round over router bit. All statue edges were eased with my Dremel using sanding drums followed by a good deal of hand sanding using 200 grit up to 1500 grit final sanding before finishing. Finishing was my typical multiple coats of clear gloss Deft Spray Lacquer. As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

    Saw Stand

I just went to the Wood Magazine website, from there click on plans at the top. Then I entered in the search "scrollsaw stand" it was the first thing that popped up. Clicked on it and there you can see the plans

    Delta P-20

If you were near by and were selling it at my budget limit, I'd buy it (I'm out of pocket on saws and have already spent a bit of cash buying saws). I am always looking for better saws for my boys club. I am down to 6 saws, but up to 12 boys, so right now, we are sharing them. Plus, they all want to use the 2-spees Delta as that is the best out of the 6 saws. I'm browsing CL to replace a couple of single speed saws. Dan

    Saw Stand

I would put some 45% fillets from the foot to each side of the legs to give it more rigidity. and maybe even a cross brace from front to back. Over engineered, but as solid as a rock

Actually they are from Wood Magazine and they're a free download, thanks anyhow. I am getting some inspiration from them. I plan to use mortise and tenon instead of screws. Then drive some wood pegs to tighten everything up.

Hawk, I think I have the plans for this stand somewhere in my files. If I remember correctly it was a free download somewhere along the line. If you’re interested in it let me know.

You could go even farther with it and add a couple of wings to it that fold like a dining table. Might be handy to have a place to put stuff when in use.

I too am a setter, so I'm going to set it up for that. I'm thinking mortise joints will help with stability. Time to generate some plans...

  21. I don't know if any remember how I had some issues with my jointer motor variable speed issue back in June.. and the electric motor shop said it's time for a new one as the parts are obsolete.. This motor service place use to save me a ton of money.. but the good guy doesn't seem to work there anymore.. They said the variable speed chip in the circuit board was bad and the circuit board is no longer available.. Well I did some research and found a circuit board but wasn't worth nearly $200to me since this same jointer new is only $250 ish.. Anyway I called the motor shop about bypassing the VS.. he said it was not able to do that on this set-up.. well turns out it is.. after lurking around the web and finding others having the same issue.. some guy posted something about if you have a motor with brushes then you can bypass it.. Anyway after getting this thing apart I see it has a normal pot switch in it.. however I don't care for the VS anyway and always left it on fast speed.. I just wired it to bypass that and it's working great.. Unfortunately but I used to brag and send that motor shop a lot of business over the years.. Doubt I'll go back there for anything much any more since the one guy isn't there anymore.. Good day today since I found a fix for my miter saw ( another post earlier today ) and now I got this jointer going.. Just didn't get much scroll sawing done.. only cut 10 ornaments today.. and my goal was to cut about 60, LOL.. Guess the day isn't completely over yet, LOL

  27. I was able to finish the last topper for the WELCOME sign. Just to recap, the pickets are pine (plan on getting cedar next time) and the letters and toppers are Steve Good patterns. The toppers have a metal plate glued to be back and there is rare earth magnet on the pickets that holds the topper in place.

  39. Hey all. Thanks for the thoughts. I am Okay. But very busy... Around Dec, 1st I had a second stroke. But I am still up right and functioning. I don't have alot of time here, because my wife also ended up in the hospital again with breathing problems... So now she is tethered to an oxygen machine all the time. So she can only go around 50 feet... And I do most the cleaning, washing and cooking now. keeps me busy.. When we do go together we are on a timer, her little carry machine runs about 4 hours on a battery. It is a good timer, that is really all the longer she has the stamina for.. I always take an extra battery and an oxygen take, for just incase we get delayed. So this is our life now... Not complaining, we have had good lives and it is our time to slow down now. She can still do a little quilting and I'm getting proficient enough at my chores that I am getting a little time in the shop again... In fact I did finish one project I started some time ago. I had it all cit out, just need finishing... It is called the Blois Goblet, a Finescrollsaw pattern. And I am doing a little work on my Woozle Bird..

  41. Thanks for the reminder. Been busy doing Easter projects and forgot all about St. Patrick's Day. Here are a couple of patterns that may be useful. Funny how there are so many variations as to what folks believe Leprechauns to be like. By the way, the second pattern is titled "Who ate my Lucky Charms?" Be well all.

  42. I cut this in a scrap piece of wood, thinking it was just for fun and practice. I like the way it turned out. Now I'm sorry I didn't use better wood. I made the pattern with GIMP from the Rubber Soul album cover photo.

  43. If you are looking to purchase a new table saw or drum sander I would recommend that you check out the company with the better business burau. If you have problems with it service can be a total nightmare.
