A Alex Fox request
Jronn65 and 8 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My daughter in Oregon has a friend that wanted a layered plaque or a dragon fly and Alex Fox is the first person to come to mind when a layer pattern is requested, so I hopped on his Etsy sight and found this one and sent my daughter a picture of the product for her friends approval. She was excited and said it would be perfect, so I got on line and downloaded it. This is the finished product that I will be taking to the post office this morning. It was interesting to make and I it looks like she is going to like it. Dick heppnerguy9 points -

Hi Everyone, Can I just say what a pleasure it is to visit the Village on a (nearly) daily basis. I NEVER fail to leave without something learned or a new pattern to try. It always cheers me up when I am at a low and I count some of you on here as Personal Friends (you know who you are). I am 83 years old this year and I still feel like a visit here is a School Day. Thank you all for having me and listening to all my woes and problems that I have met and made. take care and stay safe. Don W8 points -

I found this pattern on Etsy and just had to give it a try. So I purchased it and posted it on Facebook and I am now making one from an order. I loved the detail in it and wondered if it was something I could do. This one was a learning experience for me and the new one I am making is going along a little easier then this one was. If anyone is interested in purchasing this pattern, you can get it from Lloyds woodworking plans on Etsy. It is a download and has 26 pages. I enjoyed making it and I will be making one of these for myself and maybe a Christmas or birthday present for a friend or family member as well. I hope you like it as much as I did making it. I am not much for wooden toys do to the lack of detail in most of them. This on is more of a model then a toy and it caught my interest, right away. Dick heppnerguy6 points -

Been away for awhile

I had some termite problems in our house a year or so ago and struggled trying to find some flooring that matched what we have in our house. This problem was not very spread and the cost to rid them was only a couple hundred dollars. Finding some replacement flooring, was however, a huge problem. I went to several flooring stores in Phoenix to try and find some replacement flooring with no success. It seems this particular material was no longer made and because most of our house has this natural wood flooring I did not want to replace it in our kitchen with something that did not match so I decided to try and make something a little different that I thought might add a little interest at the same time. So I decided on this pattern and it took me a while to make it and get the finish to where I liked it. Fortunately I have a neighbor friend who is a lot better at this kind of work then I am and he helped me tremendously. This is the end results and I am happy with it, now if my wife likes it when she gets home after being gone three weeks, I will be a happy camper. Dick heppnerguy4 points -
Backers For Portraits?

I think you will like cutting those panels. I almost use the Maple exclusively and/ or Walnut when a dark contrast is needed. These panels cut fairly clean with both regular and spiral blades. Do sand the panels well to 600 grit before applying the pattern mounting material to prevent grain tear out when removing. When the maple was out of stock for a while I ordered Birch. Still nice but I like the looks of the maple much better. OK for painted work.3 points

I use backer board they sell for artwork. Its like a 1/4" foam construction paper type thing thats rigid. Comes white or black and you can paint it. The pieces glue to it fine as well. Big advantage is it is very lightweight as its designed to go into frames and such.2 points

Backers For Portraits?

As a framer, we have an excess of mat boards in all colors. I mostly use the black. If you have a local custom framer, they may have free small mat boards.2 points -
I use different colored felt for my portraits, I just glue it to the portrait and use thin cardboard.2 points

I have that planer but didn't get the stand. I love the planer. Dust collection is a breezy (literally) as it has an impeller that will send the chips across the yard. I bought a dust collection bag and some ducts and just hang it off the side. No dust collector needed.2 points

My introductional first post. Hello fellow wood butchers, A little about me: My name is Gene Howe. I'm a retired speech pathologist living the dream, for the past 50 years in rural southern AZ. Close to Tucson but, too close. We're transplants from IL. Married to Phyllis (Phyl) whose been putting up with me for 51 years. We have twin sons, and 3 grandkids. I've been a wood butcher for 50 years. In April, I'll be 81 years young. My motto is "You must grow old but, there's no reason to grow up." Consequently, If it ain't fun, I avoid it. Life's too short to be bored. My tools include two Shopsmiths with their bandsaws, A DeWalt 13" planer, various hand planes, lots of Japanese hand saws, and a plethora of clamps. In my younger years, I used to build cabinets, desks, beds and tables on commission. I learned that to earn a small fortune in woodworking, you must first start with a large fortune. Unfortunately, I had neither. So, for the past 25 years + or -, I've only built what I wanted to. Mostly boxes, small tables and, toys. No more big stuff! Living here, we have ready access to, what has become my favorite wood, Mesquite. Although, In our trips back to IL, I manage to load the pickup with walnut and maple. I will have a DeWalt scroll saw this June. My BIL is giving it to me as his interests have changed. He's in IL. Long trip. Gotta take out a second mtg to buy the gas. In the distant past, before I retired, I owned a little Delta scroll saw and really enjoyed using it. I understand that the DeWalt is a much better saw. If it's build quality is anything like their Planer, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. I'm really anxious to start scrolling again. I'm really happy I found y'all and hope to be a regular poster, here. Probably with lots of questions.1 point

Well, My old refurbished Ryobi 13" planer is getting noisy and worn out.. Not bad deal since it was only $130 from the refurb outlet mall store that I bought back in 2007. Dang near every project I make the lumber when through that planer. I think the chain drive, and bearings for the rollers is worn and it's starting to snipe pretty bad on the ends and even in the center of the board as maybe the weight shifts. Yesterday I ordered a new DeWalt 13" planer.. I sure hope it gives me as good a service as this old cheapy refub did. I got the extended tables and the roll around stand for it too.. Possibly upgrade to the Helical cutter head eventually.. would have ordered it new that way but I couldn't find any readily available and figured I can upgrade later after I wear out the knives etc. that comes with it.. Anyone in Michigan looking for a free ryobi send me a message.. It still works but sometimes snipes the board more than it should and who knows how long it'll keep working.. great parts unit or repair it if the parts are still out there. My intention when I got it was to get by for a couple months as I had been saving for the DW planer anyway.. several years later I finally get the DW that I wanted, LOL I'll be using it until the new one arrives and I get it set up so need to keep it another week or two.1 point

A few of my recent post in Bragging Rights were of some solid wood projects. There was the Heart Box, the Cat, and most recently the Kokopelli Band. In comments back and forth specifically regarding the Heart Box, some were amazed that I did most of the sanding using my Dremel plus a lot of hand sanding and that I did not have or use a spindle sander. My shop is very tiny and bench type Spindle Sanders are quite large and I just do not have the room to add one to my shop…at least that is what I thought. Doing a lot of research, I found that Tritan and Wen both make a small portable unit intended for handheld operation. Both are orange and look almost identical with the only apparent difference between the two is the name and price tag. The Tritan sells for over $150 while I was able to purchase the Wen on Amazon for under $50. Although both are designed for handheld operation, both offer a set of L-bolts that allows it to be clamped to a bench in a spindle-up position. The base/worktable of the unit is quite small, but I think it will be adequate for the type of projects I will be making. Rockler offers a plate that can be mounted to make a larger table, but I’m not sure if it will be needed. I was able to mount the unit to my already existing Sanding Station, so it does not take up any additional shop space. Here are some pics.1 point

Home Depot Project Panels

FrankEV mentioned using these panels some time ago.. I think I used then several years ago but can't remember if that was exactly what I used.. and at that time BBply was easier and cheaper anyway. I don't remember the quality or lack of anyway, I ordered some last week.. scheduled to be delivered today I think so maybe I can give it a try later this week on a portrait type project I'm making for my friend of his tractor.1 point -

Seems like it's been forever since I've completed any projects. The shop has seemed so cold since the first of the year and I just haven't had a lot of motivation. Anyway, this is a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law. And yes, I know it's 2 1/2 months late, but I think he'll still like it and probably get a laugh at it's tardiness. It's a Sheila Landry pattern, approximately 12" x 18", cut from 3/4" cherry. Thanks for looking!1 point -
I used some of the HD project panels a couple of years ago and liked them. I found them to be of solid construction with no voids. I like them better than BBply because they are available with a choice of outer layer including maple, walnut, mahogany, cherry, etc. You can even get them with birch if you must. I don't care for birch as an outer layer because it is difficult to make a nice finish.1 point

For portraits I won't use anything but 1/4" BB ply I get online in the precut 12" x 24" size. I did note the price jumped significantly the last time I ordered it.. I believe, a well done cutting deserves to be mounted on a substaintial permanent backer that I can feel confident won't deteriate over the near or far term. Especially so, as my backers are often painted a solid color using rattle can spray paint, stained and/or hand painted with Artist Acrylics. To me the backer is as important part of a portrait as is the cut panel. The total thickness of the glued-up 5/32" solid core ply and the 1/4" thick BB ply backer is just a tad over 3/8" and works well for mounting in a 1/4" x 1/2" deep rabbet I cut in my 3/4" thick Poplar Frames.1 point

Hi everyone, just thought I would show you a couple of pieces I just did on my new Pagas 21 from Denny. So far it runs great and is very quiet. These are Steve Good Patterns. The flower stand chair isn't sanded or glued yet ,so you might see some fuzzies. I just put it together to see if everything fits. Now I'll go sand it and paint it white.1 point

I bought the WEN after Steve Good did a review on it. Love it. Gave up my Rigid bench top sander as I had no space for it and it lived on my floor.1 point -
There is a product called Sureply that's used for underlayment, a bit cheaper @29.00 1/4x4x8. I had some left over from our kitchen remodel and used it a backer, it took stain quite nice. The manufacturer recommends you score it with a knife and snap it. The interior make-up is hard on blades so if cutting with a table saw I would use an older blade.1 point

Well the panels arrived and my first impression is they look like decent quality. The laminate appears thicker than standard ply that I had been using but thinner than bbply. Hopefully the photo of the edges can show good enough. The top piece is 3mm bbply to show you the comparison. These are the maple panels, they also have some other species. My new planer sure showed up fast. I ordered it yesterday afternoon. Hopefully they send out the planer stand too. Was surprised to see the planer today.1 point

Just finished cutting and framing another great pattern by Jim Blume, '' Leopard, Who Goes There " Not as intricate as the first one I cut, ''Wagon Wheels" , but It was an interesting pattern to cut , having many sharp inside and outside cuts. I was able to resize the pattern to 10" x 10" and print it on my printer on 2 sheets of paper after after following a tutorial by Travis on " How to print oversize patterns with Inkscape". Thanks for the pattern Jim Blum, I'm sure I will be downloading and cutting more of your fine patterns. beaver1 point

Thanks for the reminder. Been busy doing Easter projects and forgot all about St. Patrick's Day. Here are a couple of patterns that may be useful. Funny how there are so many variations as to what folks believe Leprechauns to be like. By the way, the second pattern is titled "Who ate my Lucky Charms?" Be well all.1 point
