Thought it would be a good idea to try out my new Wen Spindle sander, so I decided to cut another Cat Statue. Number two of the three patterns I had purchased a while ago. I converted the pattern I received in PDF format into an Inkscape SGV file and resized it a little. The statue is just under 13” tall and just under 6” wide. The oval base is 6” long x 1 ¾” wide with the perimeter being tapered about four degrees. I used 3/4” thick Walnut this time. I also added a tenon to the statue and a mortice in the base to accept the tenon. I used Five Minute Epoxy to fix the tenon in the mortice. The cutting was very easy and done using just one Pegas #3 MGT R blade. All edges of the statue and base were eased with a small round-over router bit. I was able to clean up some of the longer cuts with the Spindle Sander (which works good by the way), but some areas were just too small to access so I had to return to the Dremel Drum Sanders and hand sanding to clean up the tight places. I did a one quick wipe on/wipe off coat of Minwax Walnut Gel Stain just to deepen the wood color a little. Then, as usual, multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Comments and critique is always welcome. AND JFYI, these few quick and easy statue projects of late, have just been a diversion from making my more Art Portrait type projects. My shop time has been limited due to a non-Scroll Saw project that has taken up much of my time for the past few weeks. That project will be coming to an end soon and I plan to be able to devote more time in the shop when it is done.11 points

Hi everyone, firstly, I want to say that I am safe in my town Kherson, at the moment the town is occupied by Russians, There are many Russian military in the city (patrols, checkpoints). We try not to leave the house if it is not necessary. There is already a shortage of medicines in the city, there are practically no products in the stores, because there are no supplies - the Russians do not let anyone into the Kherson region, even humanitarian aid. There are many farms in the Kherson region and after the Russians allowed entry into the town from neighboring villages (with a full search of cars and checking documents), many farmers brought meat and vegetables to the city, but the prices are very high and there are long queues. Peaceful rallies are held in the town center almost every day. At first, the Russians ignored it, a few days ago they started shooting into the air to disperse the rally, and yesterday they used smoke and tear grenades, people were injured from fragments of grenades. Here's what's happening in Kherson. And now the good news - I have created a new site "Scroll Saw Gallery" (my Etsy store is running too), where you can see more than 1000 photos of finished projects made by my patterns, photos are from my customers. I will be appreciated if you send your photos to my email - alexscrollsaw@gmail.com Here is link - Scroll Saw Gallery7 points

thank you for the update. if you can think of how us scrollsawers can help, let us know. When and if you get into a safer place let us know also. If you need funds for a new saw. I am sure we can provide that also. Me. Mark Eason2 points

I made the pattern for this a few years ago and have cut it many times and donated them to Veteran's Organizations for fund raisers. I decided it was time to cut one for myself and will be thinking about how to frame it to set it off and yet not take away from the image itself. I also revisited the pattern as I was cutting it and made a few changes to correct a few flaws and also make it more user friendly. I ask that if you cut this, please do it in a 2 stack and donate one to some Veteran's Organization to help with their good works. Thank you1 point

A lot of detail work, assembly and finish but finally completed the largest project I have ever done. Walnut and maple of various thickness, 1/8" to 3/8". The curved end panels ended up being a 1/32" wood used for craft projects. It's the only thickness that would make the bend of about 30 degrees. Had to stack cut with 1/8" ply and a #2 blade at low speed. IMG_.HEICIMG_1085.HEIC1 point -
I like everything about it! Neat design and well doner finishing too. Looks like it belongs in a modern art display somewhere.1 point

Thanks. 4mm converts to 0.15748 inches. So in our terms, it would be considered 5/32". (5/32=.15625). I just assumed 1/6 was a typo as our measurments are displayed in terms of the demoninator as multiples of 64. Ie., 64, 32. 16, 8, 4 ,2. Also, I just thought that Heart Mandela was much too beautiful to lay on a table under something. A nice backer and a frame would make it a very wonderful piece of art to hang on a wall.1 point -

BBP
OCtoolguy reacted to savethebeer for a topic
in Ireland its known as Russian Birch Ply. I went to my supplier today to spend a gift voucher I got for Christmas. I got two sheets of 4mm plywood just to use the voucher cause I knew that stocks are running low. This time 6 months ago most of the Birch forests on the Steppes were ablaze which meant a worldwide shortage anyway, but now with Ukraine being invaded we will not be using BBP for much longer. He did say he knows of a supplier in Poland who is experimenting with various types of wood laminates to try and come up with thin wood that will have a decent finish similar to what we have in BBP. However he cant see any solution in the short term and it'll be many months before we have a reliable supply coming into the shops.1 point -

very nice as I said in your other post, good luck this weekend, I would think they will sell fast, RJ1 point -
Yeah, I've been reading about shortages.. I myself have been experimenting with other types of ply etc. and I really like the project panels from Home Depot ( See my posting from last week about the HD Project panels ). Not really any cheaper than the price of BBply at the moment but when BBply supply runs out it's not going to be available most likely for a long time. I have enough BBP to get me by for probably 1-2 years.. maybe longer if business slows down, which I'm kinda expecting to happen.. since everything price so high all of a sudden.. I think people will have less money to shop with for a few years at least.1 point

Thanks for that ...Just sorting out some thin wood at the moment it's hard to find in New Zealand...1 point -
I've found it depends a lot on the type of wood and how long you let it set in the oil.. Wood types that really soak it in.. may take several weeks. I mess with cherry mostly but recently in the last couple years started using poplar for puzzles. The cherry it'll dry out fairly quick like 3-5 days. Poplar might take a couple weeks.. and don't even think about red oak or spalted maple.. In those woods that really soak it up, I usually try to just do a very quick dip and wipe off so it's not soaked in deep into the wood as that is when it takes forever to dry out. Also, humidity plays a huge factor.. Now there are also different VOC's in Danish oil.. and the one type dries about 3 times faster than the other ( or it seems ), LOL.. BUT the slower dry one also leaves a nicer luster / sheen1 point
