Memory Box
Phantom Scroller and 7 others reacted to Badgerboy for a topic
I was asked to make a memory box by my future son-in-law for his mom who recently lost her favorite horse. She wanted a place to store the horse’s bridle. I haven’t made a box in quite awhile so I went with with a simple design using corner splines to add some visual splash. The top is a modified Sue Mey design which I enlarged and added the horse’s name. The box is made from hard maple with walnut splines and finished with 3 coats of poly. I lined the box bottom and cover with felt. Everyone seems happy with the outcome.8 points -

Hi everyone, firstly, I want to say that I am safe in my town Kherson, at the moment the town is occupied by Russians, There are many Russian military in the city (patrols, checkpoints). We try not to leave the house if it is not necessary. There is already a shortage of medicines in the city, there are practically no products in the stores, because there are no supplies - the Russians do not let anyone into the Kherson region, even humanitarian aid. There are many farms in the Kherson region and after the Russians allowed entry into the town from neighboring villages (with a full search of cars and checking documents), many farmers brought meat and vegetables to the city, but the prices are very high and there are long queues. Peaceful rallies are held in the town center almost every day. At first, the Russians ignored it, a few days ago they started shooting into the air to disperse the rally, and yesterday they used smoke and tear grenades, people were injured from fragments of grenades. Here's what's happening in Kherson. And now the good news - I have created a new site "Scroll Saw Gallery" (my Etsy store is running too), where you can see more than 1000 photos of finished projects made by my patterns, photos are from my customers. I will be appreciated if you send your photos to my email - alexscrollsaw@gmail.com Here is link - Scroll Saw Gallery6 points

I found this pattern on Etsy and just had to give it a try. So I purchased it and posted it on Facebook and I am now making one from an order. I loved the detail in it and wondered if it was something I could do. This one was a learning experience for me and the new one I am making is going along a little easier then this one was. If anyone is interested in purchasing this pattern, you can get it from Lloyds woodworking plans on Etsy. It is a download and has 26 pages. I enjoyed making it and I will be making one of these for myself and maybe a Christmas or birthday present for a friend or family member as well. I hope you like it as much as I did making it. I am not much for wooden toys do to the lack of detail in most of them. This on is more of a model then a toy and it caught my interest, right away. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

Alex, Hello from Kansas City, Missouri, USA. I'm happy to support you in this difficult time. I just wanted you to know that I ordered a set of your 15 Bowl Patterns, but the order was made in the name "Suzanne" from The Farmer's House. I do some Etsy selling for them and when I made my order, it credited them with the purchase. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I support you, and I am a big fan of your pattern-making skill. Thanks for the update. The people of Ukraine are in our prayers daily. Personally I am supporting Samaritan’s Purse. They have an emergency field hospital just inside the border. Check it out. Another way to help Alex personally is to buy his patterns. I have six of his bowl patterns and plan to buy more.3 points -
I made the pattern for this a few years ago and have cut it many times and donated them to Veteran's Organizations for fund raisers. I decided it was time to cut one for myself and will be thinking about how to frame it to set it off and yet not take away from the image itself. I also revisited the pattern as I was cutting it and made a few changes to correct a few flaws and also make it more user friendly. I ask that if you cut this, please do it in a 2 stack and donate one to some Veteran's Organization to help with their good works. Thank you2 points

WATCO Danish Oil Cure Time
BadBob and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I've heard that it can take at least 30 days for Watco to fully cure. This is subject to conditions. You need low humidity, warmer temps, air flow around the entire piece and good ventilation. Less than ideal conditions means longer cure times. Years ago I built a china hutch for my wife, for our 25th anniversary. I finished it with oil based varnish, inside & out. It took years before the smell inside the hutch went away completely. That's when I learned never to use oil based finishes inside enclosed spaces like cabinets, drawers, boxes, etc.2 points -
I saw this saying hanging on a wall in my local diner. At my age it is absolutely true!!!! Cut Panel is 5/32" x 15 1/2" x 6" Solid Core Maple affixed to 1/4" BB Ply painted backer. Finished with multple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. I created the pattern using UNCONFORM for the Black font and a modified version of Superficious, to make it scrollable, for the Red script font...both can be found found on dafont.com. The Frame is just made from 3/4" x 3/4" pine, finished with Black Lacquer. This is not ART, just a fun piece I made for myself.2 points

WATCO Danish Oil Cure Time
John B reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
If an oil based finish has been applied, the color has already changed somewhat. I doubt you will notice much more by topcoating with clear shellac. Yes it does impart a slightly amber tint, but the Danish oil has already done that. If you wanted to take it s step further, you can buy shellac in flake form and mix your own. Flakes come in a much wider variety of tints and there are ones that are more clear than what is used in the Zinsser pre-mixed shellac you buy at the Big Box.1 point -

New DeWalt Planer
John B reacted to Zoot Fenster for a topic
You will like the Dewalt planer. Mine has lasted 10-12 years and many hours of use. I finally installed a carbide helical head bought in 2007. It took that long to use up the straight knives. The helical head is much quieter, but leaves more snipe. Would I do it again? Probably not. Avoid knot holes. I broke the fan housing when a piece flew off and cracked the casing. It also chips the knives.1 point -
