A little gift for a Very Speial Relative
Wichman and 7 others reacted to Greatgrandpawrichard for a topic
I just finished a little gift for a very special relative that went out of his way to fix my GMC Yukon Trailer Towing vehicle when we broke down while we were on vacation and down in his neck of the woods visiting him and his wife. He is a Mechanic by trade and owns his own Business . He took my rig into his shop, diagnosed the problem, fixed it, plus he even topped off my Air Conditioning unit with Fluid. When I asked him what the charges were he said "Nothing"! He wouldn't let me pay him for his time and efforts nor for the use of his shop! He said "That's what Family does for Family! He is a Native American and his spirit animal is a Bald Eagle, so when I saw this pattern on Steve Good's website I just knew immediately that I wanted to make it for such a special relative in thanks for his help! I can't tell you how great the service is from Artcraftersonline.com enough. I ordered another set of Pegas chucks on Tuesday. It's Friday and I have them in hand. That's from Tennessee to So. Cal. in 3 days. I'm truly surprised at the USPS too. They are usually slow but they have stepped it up. Thanks Denny Knappen for the great service. And a 15% discount to boot.3 points

Great Work! The situation in the Ukraine right now shows how IMPORTANT our 2nd amendment really is! There are now no anti-gun Ukrainian citizens! WE cannot let them take that away like some of our "government" officials & others- on all levels are trying to!3 points

Memory Box
Phantom Scroller and 2 others reacted to Badgerboy for a topic
I was asked to make a memory box by my future son-in-law for his mom who recently lost her favorite horse. She wanted a place to store the horse’s bridle. I haven’t made a box in quite awhile so I went with with a simple design using corner splines to add some visual splash. The top is a modified Sue Mey design which I enlarged and added the horse’s name. The box is made from hard maple with walnut splines and finished with 3 coats of poly. I lined the box bottom and cover with felt. Everyone seems happy with the outcome.3 points -
Hi everyone, firstly, I want to say that I am safe in my town Kherson, at the moment the town is occupied by Russians, There are many Russian military in the city (patrols, checkpoints). We try not to leave the house if it is not necessary. There is already a shortage of medicines in the city, there are practically no products in the stores, because there are no supplies - the Russians do not let anyone into the Kherson region, even humanitarian aid. There are many farms in the Kherson region and after the Russians allowed entry into the town from neighboring villages (with a full search of cars and checking documents), many farmers brought meat and vegetables to the city, but the prices are very high and there are long queues. Peaceful rallies are held in the town center almost every day. At first, the Russians ignored it, a few days ago they started shooting into the air to disperse the rally, and yesterday they used smoke and tear grenades, people were injured from fragments of grenades. Here's what's happening in Kherson. And now the good news - I have created a new site "Scroll Saw Gallery" (my Etsy store is running too), where you can see more than 1000 photos of finished projects made by my patterns, photos are from my customers. I will be appreciated if you send your photos to my email - alexscrollsaw@gmail.com Here is link - Scroll Saw Gallery2 points

motor cycle model
amazingkevin and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I found this pattern on Etsy and just had to give it a try. So I purchased it and posted it on Facebook and I am now making one from an order. I loved the detail in it and wondered if it was something I could do. This one was a learning experience for me and the new one I am making is going along a little easier then this one was. If anyone is interested in purchasing this pattern, you can get it from Lloyds woodworking plans on Etsy. It is a download and has 26 pages. I enjoyed making it and I will be making one of these for myself and maybe a Christmas or birthday present for a friend or family member as well. I hope you like it as much as I did making it. I am not much for wooden toys do to the lack of detail in most of them. This on is more of a model then a toy and it caught my interest, right away. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

I made the pattern for this a few years ago and have cut it many times and donated them to Veteran's Organizations for fund raisers. I decided it was time to cut one for myself and will be thinking about how to frame it to set it off and yet not take away from the image itself. I also revisited the pattern as I was cutting it and made a few changes to correct a few flaws and also make it more user friendly. I ask that if you cut this, please do it in a 2 stack and donate one to some Veteran's Organization to help with their good works. Thank you1 point

WATCO Danish Oil Cure Time
BadBob reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
There really should be no mystery regarding the various finishing products available to the hobbiest woodworker, but it seems like manufacturers love to promote the myth that their product is a blend of secret ingredients with mystical powers. A lot of is it just marketing hype and a fair amount is confusing at best and misleading at worst. If you use any oil based finish, the smell may seem to go away within a few days, under ideal conditions. However, put that piece in a box for a couple days and I suspect you will find that it is still off-gassing. The best short term solution is to top coat it, once the recommended drying time has been achieved. However, you need to top coat it with something that won't compound the problem. For example, it would be self defeating to apply BLO to a piece, then follow up with a top coat of an oil based polyurethane. That's why lacquer and shellac are popular choices. People use the oil based product to pop the grain and a top coat to protect and seal it. Waterborne finishes are another option, but I don't like applying them directly over oil. I prefer a barrier coat of shellac first to prevent any problems with incompatibility between unlike products. For scroll saw projects that don't get a lot of wear and abuse, using shellac as the sealer and topcoat is ideal for me.1 point -

When I saw the heading I was excited to see what you had cut but it is not what I was expecting. My grandson and I both have Viking in our DNA. Not my cup of tea but you did a great job on the cutting, well done. Marg1 point -
I don’t know as I have never used anything else. What you need to do is venture out north to L. A. County and see if you can find some. Here in Ventura Co. it is readily available. Maybe look on Home Depot’s web site of the nearest store in L.A. county. I know you hate the thought of venturing out into traffic to L.A. county, but it might be worth it.1 point

I don’t use Watco Danish oil. I use a 50/50 mix of Boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. The mineral spirits thins the oil and usually dries within 24 hours. I will then topcoat with semi gloss spray lacquer. If I need to ship right away, I’ll let the lacquer cure for two days before shipping. So, if I have a special order, I give a lead time of two weeks.1 point

Hmm, soapy water huh.. I'll be interested in your results on that if you try it.. I feel your pain on time lines being I sell online and mostly use Danish oil finish.. In the summer months I can set the project outside in the sun for a few hours and usually I can have the smell gone within 2-3 days.. During the cold winter.. that's another story and not going to happen. Most times in the cold climate if the need to ship it is within a few days I will just use a different method to finish but I do like the way the Danish Oil makes the wood grain pop. A lot of times in the cold I use the mineral oil and beeswax mix or a polyurethane spray. I heat the shop with a wood pellet stove.. setting the project out in front of that where the blower blows the heat out.. most times I can still achieve a 3-5 day no smell and if I do smell slightly and I need to ship. I will top coat with the water base poly and that takes care of the smell. I hate top coating though.. so this soapy water I might have to give a try on some scrap to see what happens.1 point

I started late Spring of ‘21 and just finished. I take breaks for periods of time for other interests. When I do cutting it may be for 1 to 3 hours each time. The detail work takes so much focus and slow speed cutting I get eye strain sometimes.1 point -

You should try the DecoArt Americana paints from Michaels. You can get a staining medium that you mix the paint into. it keeps it thicker, but lets it act like a stain, and you can set how much paint vs medium you want.. I think you would have some real good coloring, and still leave a nice wood grain pattern under it.1 point -
