    Jewelry Box

A couple of years ago @OCtoolguy posted a box similar to this that I really liked so I have had to make a few. I used sapele and maple with velvet drawer inserts.

  2. The other day, I decided to make up another one of those candy/nut baskets that I have made many of. I had an assortment of woods so I decided on the top and bottom of padauk, 3 layers of cherry and 4 layers of poplar. All good at that point, so I cut everything out. Yesterday I glued everything up and left it in clamps overnight. Today, I decided that I'd like to see what it was going to look like after oiling. I had heard a long time ago that a spray of alcohol and water would give a quick look at what the finished product would be like so I give it a few squirts and it definitely give me an idea of how it would look. Unfortunately, the padauk has run down into the top layer of poplar. Sad face here. Oh well, lesson learned and this one will be different than anything I've made so far. I think I'll give it another spray or two and also let it run from the bottom up into the next layer of poplar. It'll just have a look like a "tie-dyed" tee shirt. Dang!

  3. I just finished a little gift for a very special relative that went out of his way to fix my GMC Yukon Trailer Towing vehicle when we broke down while we were on vacation and down in his neck of the woods visiting him and his wife. He is a Mechanic by trade and owns his own Business . He took my rig into his shop, diagnosed the problem, fixed it, plus he even topped off my Air Conditioning unit with Fluid. When I asked him what the charges were he said "Nothing"! He wouldn't let me pay him for his time and efforts nor for the use of his shop! He said "That's what Family does for Family! He is a Native American and his spirit animal is a Bald Eagle, so when I saw this pattern on Steve Good's website I just knew immediately that I wanted to make it for such a special relative in thanks for his help! 4. I can't tell you how great the service is from Artcraftersonline.com enough. I ordered another set of Pegas chucks on Tuesday. It's Friday and I have them in hand. That's from Tennessee to So. Cal. in 3 days. I'm truly surprised at the USPS too. They are usually slow but they have stepped it up. Thanks Denny Knappen for the great service. And a 15% discount to boot.

  7. @OCtoolguy Ray, many years ago we used to tell what a finished piece would like, eg the grain, by spitting on it not very hygienic so now I just rub a little water on with my finger. The only reason I could see for using the Alcohol (Metho) is that it would dry quicker. No need to drench the item. As for it raising the grain, it is minimal and as I am sure you have sanded the piece, another 10 seconds to cut it back isn't going to be a problem. As for colour run, I have seen that with Jarrah and Pine when the joint area has been flooded with finish. Can't wait to see the finished product.

  9. I tried the soap and water. No joy. It did reduce the odor to near zero, but it came back after 24 hours. The odor was not as strong, but it is still there. I don't like applying a top coat over any oil finish. So no more Watco Danish Oil for me. I tried it because many had posted here that they use it, and I wanted to give it a try. I tried boiled linseed oil a few years ago with much the same result. It took weeks for the odor to dissipate.

    New Scroll Saw Gallery

Hi everyone, firstly, I want to say that I am safe in my town Kherson, at the moment the town is occupied by Russians, There are many Russian military in the city (patrols, checkpoints). We try not to leave the house if it is not necessary. There is already a shortage of medicines in the city, there are practically no products in the stores, because there are no supplies - the Russians do not let anyone into the Kherson region, even humanitarian aid. There are many farms in the Kherson region and after the Russians allowed entry into the town from neighboring villages (with a full search of cars and checking documents), many farmers brought meat and vegetables to the city, but the prices are very high and there are long queues. Peaceful rallies are held in the town center almost every day. At first, the Russians ignored it, a few days ago they started shooting into the air to disperse the rally, and yesterday they used smoke and tear grenades, people were injured from fragments of grenades. Here's what's happening in Kherson. And now the good news - I have created a new site "Scroll Saw Gallery" (my Etsy store is running too), where you can see more than 1000 photos of finished projects made by my patterns, photos are from my customers. I will be appreciated if you send your photos to my email - alexscrollsaw@gmail.com Here is link - Scroll Saw Gallery

  18. Thanks for the encouragement. As most know, I have monthly specials sent out in the newsletter. This month it is 15% with a coupon code SPRING22. I will do something different next month. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, and I support the efforts of Samaritan's Purse in Ukraine. They have a field hospital just inside the border. For the month of April, for any order placed, I will donate 25% of the order to the Samaritan's Purse. I made an offer similar to this one last June and $500 was donated to an orphanage in Haiti. I hope we can do more for the Samaritan's Purse.

  19. Mineral Spirits is much more refined than paint thinner. It is clear with little smell. Paint thinner is very milky and has a strong odor. For mixing a clear finish like my 50/50 mix, paint thinner would make it milky. I’ve never tried it because I’ve always had mineral spirits available.

Showed your box to my wife. She wanted me to tell you that she thought you did it on purpose. Because it looks so good. She is a much better artist than I am for sure. The top draws eye to bottom. No mistakes in art lol

  23. isopropyl alcohol typically is a mixture of alcohol and water. Most common is a 70% mix where the other 30& is water. But you can also buy 97%. That's the purest form I have seen in the stores.

Can't remember what the special is for March. Maybe I'll hold off til April to see what he offers. Thanks for everything Denny!

  35. I would never use water to see to see what the finish looks like. Alcohol my be ok but not mixed with water. As Kevin mentioned, water is used to raise the grain to sand off when you are using a water based topcoat. I know you are going to hate hearing this, but I use a spritz of mineral spirits to see what the wood will look like with oil on it. Just like everything else in life, woodworking is a trial. You will know better next time you want to mix tropical woods with light woods. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve seen guys build a chess board with Paduck and Maple. Then sand it all down and end up with a horrible mess! The oils in the Paduck leached into the Maple.

  36. Yes Kevin, that's exactly what it will be. LOL. No, somewhere on this forum, it was suggested to do a quick spritz of alcohol. The part of half water may be a mistake. I just know that I have a spray bottle of whatever it is in my shop and I used it. I've done it before with positive results but I never dreamed the padauk would bleed the way it did. That's why I posted "lesson learned". I'll not make that mistake again.

    Memory Box

I was asked to make a memory box by my future son-in-law for his mom who recently lost her favorite horse. She wanted a place to store the horse’s bridle. I haven’t made a box in quite awhile so I went with with a simple design using corner splines to add some visual splash. The top is a modified Sue Mey design which I enlarged and added the horse’s name. The box is made from hard maple with walnut splines and finished with 3 coats of poly. I lined the box bottom and cover with felt. Everyone seems happy with the outcome.

  47. Alex, Hello from Kansas City, Missouri, USA. I'm happy to support you in this difficult time. I just wanted you to know that I ordered a set of your 15 Bowl Patterns, but the order was made in the name "Suzanne" from The Farmer's House. I do some Etsy selling for them and when I made my order, it credited them with the purchase. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I support you, and I am a big fan of your pattern-making skill.
