    Jewelry Box

A couple of years ago @OCtoolguy posted a box similar to this that I really liked so I have had to make a few. I used sapele and maple with velvet drawer inserts.

  5. I just finished a little gift for a very special relative that went out of his way to fix my GMC Yukon Trailer Towing vehicle when we broke down while we were on vacation and down in his neck of the woods visiting him and his wife. He is a Mechanic by trade and owns his own Business . He took my rig into his shop, diagnosed the problem, fixed it, plus he even topped off my Air Conditioning unit with Fluid. When I asked him what the charges were he said "Nothing"! He wouldn't let me pay him for his time and efforts nor for the use of his shop! He said "That's what Family does for Family! He is a Native American and his spirit animal is a Bald Eagle, so when I saw this pattern on Steve Good's website I just knew immediately that I wanted to make it for such a special relative in thanks for his help! 7. I haven't found any patterns. I've just been Googling wooden shawl pins and using the images as patterns. I make them the size I want on Inkscape and print 2 so I can use one for each piece of the pin. On some, like the mouse and the cat, it helps to sand a groove in the body part to help the head and tail stay in the right place if that makes sense. I don't think copyrights would be an issue on something like this. A real pattern would be easier though. They are really fun to make.

  9. The other day, I decided to make up another one of those candy/nut baskets that I have made many of. I had an assortment of woods so I decided on the top and bottom of padauk, 3 layers of cherry and 4 layers of poplar. All good at that point, so I cut everything out. Yesterday I glued everything up and left it in clamps overnight. Today, I decided that I'd like to see what it was going to look like after oiling. I had heard a long time ago that a spray of alcohol and water would give a quick look at what the finished product would be like so I give it a few squirts and it definitely give me an idea of how it would look. Unfortunately, the padauk has run down into the top layer of poplar. Sad face here. Oh well, lesson learned and this one will be different than anything I've made so far. I think I'll give it another spray or two and also let it run from the bottom up into the next layer of poplar. It'll just have a look like a "tie-dyed" tee shirt. Dang!

  10. I can't tell you how great the service is from Artcraftersonline.com enough. I ordered another set of Pegas chucks on Tuesday. It's Friday and I have them in hand. That's from Tennessee to So. Cal. in 3 days. I'm truly surprised at the USPS too. They are usually slow but they have stepped it up. Thanks Denny Knappen for the great service. And a 15% discount to boot.

  11. When gluing up Padauk you should also wipe it down with acetone to clean off the oil so the glue bonds well.

  12. I have been rethinking Watco brand Danish oil. Danish oil enhances grain so beautifully but it cures so slowly. I like to use a lacquer finish and current advice is wait 3-14 (or longer!) days after applying Watco Danish Oil before applying lacquer. I have a heat gun in my shop that I use to check the cure. Applying heat to causes the oil to sweat and actually causes beads of liquid oil to form on the surface. I have observed this for up to 7 days. Using heat and wiping off the liquid speeds up drying. I stumbled across an article that proposed home made Danish oil that achieves the look while drying faster. https://vanduynwoodwork.com/2018/09/18/danish-oil-finish-top-3-reasons-to-mix-your-own/ I tried this and it achieved the grain enhancement while drying in 3 days. After drying, I apply a coat or two of sealcoat shellac (unwaxed shellac). This seal coat greatly reduces spotty absorption of the lacquer (a real problem with cherry) while providing a solid base for lacquer adherence. Some cherry has porous spots that will absorb lacquer like a sponge leaving an uneven finish and requiring a ridiculous number of coats of lacquer before you build up the surface. Then you sand away most of it to get a flat coat. I have 2 pieces in the basement that have defeated me thus the hunt for a better way. Woodworkers put in waaaay too much effort to have a piece ruined during finishing.

  14. I use paint thinner. It isn't milky and it is a lot cheaper although it does smell a bit stronger.

  15. This a is a quick way to show cut rings to reverse stack to make a bowl. Or in this case a crown to a cowboy hat. This is black walnut 3/4 inch cut at 9 degree angle. 0.125 inch thick rings. Some times I call them slices. You can zoom into the picture and see how thin the cuts are. Me. Mark Eason

  23. John, the idea of using alcohol is it dries fast and leaves no watermark. At least that's what I heard. I just never gave any thought to the possibility of the padauk running. Now I know better.

  24. I ran into that problem with the wood of padauk when I had glued up that wood with maple and proceeded to sand the the piece to a smooth finish! When I cleared off the dust, lo and behold the maple had been stained red! Lesson learned, don't combine a light wood with padauk! After that happened I looked up the history of the wood and found out that where this is grown that the natives use this wood to dye other woods and , this I am not sure of, fabrics also! Anyway just be careful and presand both woods before gluing them up! Erv

  25. Thanks for the encouragement. As most know, I have monthly specials sent out in the newsletter. This month it is 15% with a coupon code SPRING22. I will do something different next month. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, and I support the efforts of Samaritan's Purse in Ukraine. They have a field hospital just inside the border. For the month of April, for any order placed, I will donate 25% of the order to the Samaritan's Purse. I made an offer similar to this one last June and $500 was donated to an orphanage in Haiti. I hope we can do more for the Samaritan's Purse.

Sorry to disappoint you. It's not my cup of tea either, but it looked challenging.....so I had to cut it. And.....being the arrogant sort......once I cut it, I had to show it off.....lol Chuck

  32. My heart just sank. I was doing some maintenance on the website and I thought I was removing a test area. Instead, I ended up deleting the whole school. The whole thing is gone. And to make it worse, I just sent out a newsletter promoting the classes, too. I feel sick. I have the class content still, but I have to rebuild the whole University from scratch. Those that were enrolled will have to re-enroll again if they want to check it out. All of the comments are gone forever, though. I think I'm going to go on a walk, then I'll get back to rebuilding it. I'm really sorry you guys. Never turn your back on technology.
