  5. This a is a quick way to show cut rings to reverse stack to make a bowl. Or in this case a crown to a cowboy hat. This is black walnut 3/4 inch cut at 9 degree angle. 0.125 inch thick rings. Some times I call them slices. You can zoom into the picture and see how thin the cuts are. Me. Mark Eason

  6. In the progress of cutting another pattern by Jim Blume, '' Roaring Cat '' . Looks like this after about 20 hrs and 200 entry cuts . The mouth part is cut out except a few spots to keep it there till all the rest of the pattern is cut out, to protect the whiskers from being broken off, very delicate.

    Batman

You've had another busy weekend again, Chuck. Great job. Maybe you can sit outside the movie theater and set up your displays.

  8. Ray, yep pictures proove it happened. Is there a possibility of unglueing, heat gun, acetone? remove 2 layers , replace stained, then reglue? easy way out is stain or paint every other layer dark brown or black. might be ok. Me. Mark Eason

  11. I found this pattern on Etsy and just had to give it a try. So I purchased it and posted it on Facebook and I am now making one from an order. I loved the detail in it and wondered if it was something I could do. This one was a learning experience for me and the new one I am making is going along a little easier then this one was. If anyone is interested in purchasing this pattern, you can get it from Lloyds woodworking plans on Etsy. It is a download and has 26 pages. I enjoyed making it and I will be making one of these for myself and maybe a Christmas or birthday present for a friend or family member as well. I hope you like it as much as I did making it. I am not much for wooden toys do to the lack of detail in most of them. This on is more of a model then a toy and it caught my interest, right away. Dick heppnerguy

  32. I have been rethinking Watco brand Danish oil. Danish oil enhances grain so beautifully but it cures so slowly. I like to use a lacquer finish and current advice is wait 3-14 (or longer!) days after applying Watco Danish Oil before applying lacquer. I have a heat gun in my shop that I use to check the cure. Applying heat to causes the oil to sweat and actually causes beads of liquid oil to form on the surface. I have observed this for up to 7 days. Using heat and wiping off the liquid speeds up drying. I stumbled across an article that proposed home made Danish oil that achieves the look while drying faster. https://vanduynwoodwork.com/2018/09/18/danish-oil-finish-top-3-reasons-to-mix-your-own/ I tried this and it achieved the grain enhancement while drying in 3 days. After drying, I apply a coat or two of sealcoat shellac (unwaxed shellac). This seal coat greatly reduces spotty absorption of the lacquer (a real problem with cherry) while providing a solid base for lacquer adherence. Some cherry has porous spots that will absorb lacquer like a sponge leaving an uneven finish and requiring a ridiculous number of coats of lacquer before you build up the surface. Then you sand away most of it to get a flat coat. I have 2 pieces in the basement that have defeated me thus the hunt for a better way. Woodworkers put in waaaay too much effort to have a piece ruined during finishing.

    Jewelry Box

A couple of years ago @OCtoolguy posted a box similar to this that I really liked so I have had to make a few. I used sapele and maple with velvet drawer inserts.

    Memory Box

I was asked to make a memory box by my future son-in-law for his mom who recently lost her favorite horse. She wanted a place to store the horse’s bridle. I haven’t made a box in quite awhile so I went with with a simple design using corner splines to add some visual splash. The top is a modified Sue Mey design which I enlarged and added the horse’s name. The box is made from hard maple with walnut splines and finished with 3 coats of poly. I lined the box bottom and cover with felt. Everyone seems happy with the outcome.

    Hey from Kansas!

Welcome from Minnesota. When I first started scrolling I purchased an used RBI Hawk 26. It worked well but the vibrations and were annoying to me. I then found a Excalibur 21 that was new in the box. I love everything about that machine. I upgraded to the Pegus blade holder and just yesterday replaced my 3 diopter (1.75x magnification) with a new magnifying lamp with a 5 diopter lens (2.25x magnification) purchased from Boli Optics (bolioptics.com) This lamp came with 3 lenses (3,5 & 8 diopters) which should outlast me. The other feature I like with the Excalibur is the top feeding blade (attach blade to upper blade holder and lower the arm while feeding the blade through the pilot hole in your work piece). This is strictly a personal preference as there are many on this forum who work with bottom feeding machines without difficulty or complaint. Good luck with your adventure into the addicting world of scrolling! Bruce
