  2. Ok, most everybody has seen the votive candle holders that I've made in the past but for those who might not have, I'm including a picture of a finished one. I'm also posting pics of all the parts for the 4 that I'm currently making for my wife to give away. She likes this particular thing more than any of the other stuff I've made for her and so it has become her "go-to" gift. The original pattern called for a glass of some sort with a votive candle in it but my wife went to Hobby Lobby and found the flameless candles that just fit so she includes one of them along with the holder. The pics show all the parts both cut and still to be cut. The 8 side panels for each one take about an hour each to cut out. They are compound cuts and just take a long time to do. I've tried every way I can think of to speed up the process but it just can't be done any faster. Lots of taping and re-taping to hold everthing together while cutting. Time consuming to say the least. The other pieces are 4 tops, 4 bases and 8 supports. 4 of the supports are recessed into the tops and can't be seen but the other 4 go at the bottom and are attached to the base unit. The bases still need to have the outer edge routed. I should have done that when I routed the underside of the 4 tops but forgot. I hate routing anything because of the noise and the mess but it's a necessity sometimes. Anyway, I hope you understand what all this is about. Please don't pay any attention to the 4 base unit patterns. When I scanned them in, there was a shadow on the pattern and I could not get rid of it so it just came out this way.

    VW's and Caravans

I had these two VW's I made quite a while ago, and decided they needed something extra to take to markets so a couple Tear Drop caravans became the order of the day. The complete unit measures about 330mm in length.

    Name Puzzle

Got a request for a new name puzzle from my team mate on Thursday. Need to deliver this Thursday. All done! Thanks to Don for his help with the pattern. With his tutelage, I may actually be able to do my own pattern next time. Cut from BB Ply with a #5 MG reverse blade. Font is Berlin. Colour provided by Unicorn Spit. Final finish is Tung Oil.

And then there are those of us who use them routinely. Jig saw puzzle cutting requires a thin kerf so the puzzle doesn’t have a lot of slop in it. 2/0 or 3/0 blades fit that bill nicely.

I have never used a 2/0 blade, never bought any because I have never seen a use for one for what I do.

    Pheonix Rising

I was looking for something different and found this Pheonix Rising image that I was able to convert to a Scroll Saw Pattern. I had to modified it significantly to make it scrollable and I did add some of my own embellishment’s. The cut panel is 5/32” x 12” x 15” Hand Painted Solid Core Maple affixed to a 1/4” x 12” x 15” Hand Painted BB Ply backer. I finished the assembled panel with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. The Frame is my typical 1 3/4” wide Poplar finished with Black Lacquer. My unbiased (Yeah, I know) Lady thinks it is great…I, on the other hand being my own worst critic, am not too happy with the overall finish work. Mostly the painting. OK, Comments and Critique appreciated.

  11. Yes, slightly. I could rig up a brace or shelf to put under it but I'll wait to see what I do when I move it to the garage. It does cut down on noise without the dust collector running and it's easy to empty.
    2 points
  12. I currently can't get close enough to the dust collector so I just attached some elbow and attached a dust collector bag to it. It does a great job. When our garage is built I'll move the shop out of the basement and have a better set up, but this is working great for me. It's out of the way and collects the waste.

  14. I thought I would share my scroll saw blade holder with you. The photos shows the in it’s normal position and the second shows the holder close at hand and easy access to my blades.

  15. I put a 90 degree fitting on the planer and have it pointed to the side. Works pretty well for me. Phil

I know this is off topic . But I have a MAC mop the ones with the 1/4 inch shaft purchased from https://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/mm07203/ I use the 180 and 240 grit.

  17. I am jealous that you got a planer. One just wouldn't quite fit in my budget or my shop. So, for now, I resaw close to the desired thickness and then use the belt sander to get the panel to the desired thickness and finish. It is not as good as a planer, but good enough for what I do these days. The belt sander is loud and makes a lot of sawdust, maybe about as bad as the planer?

@Denny Knappen had an article about this in the ArtCrafters Scroll Saw Newsletter April 15, 2022 as follows: "Tip for those with the Pegas Chuck Head Sets for popular saws. The way the 2/0R MGT blades are made, they tend to break when the tension is applied. The black knob in the back is not to be used for tensioning, but it works as long as you remember to set it back. Tighten the blade in both clamps, move the knob one mark to lessen the tension and then flip the white lever slowly. No blade breakage. Remember to return the knob to the original position." I corresponded with him about this and he replied that this is what the good folks at Pegas suggested. I sometimes use the Pegas 2/0R MGT blades and I use the deflection method.

About the only thing I use them for.. I have on occasion done custom requested ornaments where I only want / need to cut one piece of 1/8" ply and they fit the bill for that quite well. Like I said above, I don't use them often, but when I do I usually use them on my Hawk.. because it has a less aggressive more straight up down blade movement which is much easier to control when using just one piece of thin stock.

    What's happening?!!!

I understand what Ray is saying, I've noticed it too and it's been happening for a longer period of time than just the last few weeks.. I'm going to add to this conversation just a little bit and try to keep politics and whatnot out of it. We had a handful of people that would comment on most every topic to keep conversation going.. those few people, well some are no longer with us on this earth and some others are dealing with health and other hardship times... When I start a topic about something and nobody comments on said topic.. what's the point of posting my conversation??? lots of people "read" but don't comment.. makes me feel as though I'm wasting valuable time and I can go to a FB group and post and get 50 like reactions and several comments.. post same topic here and get maybe 1-2 comments and very little reactions. IF nobody is here to pick up my conversation I'm just talking to myself then right? SO, if you want to see a change in the activity on the forum then be the activity you want to see. Those few people that used to help keep conversations going made it feel like someone was actually listening (reading ) and they spent a lot of time on here doing so.. many of us are working still and don't have the time to go through every topic and comment, but they almost commented on every post in every forum topic which made the topic starter feel someone cared and was listening.. now it seems like talking into space.. I can talk to myself out in the shop while getting work done and get the same answers I get here lately so why not get some work done instead. People will go where they get the attention.. unfortunately those FB groups are hopping with activity.. I personally can't stand the FB groups nor FB itself or the founder and his weird beliefs... okay.. better stop there because it's heading into a political convo now.. but you all get the idea.. anyway it's sad that so many are actively using that place and if I want any conversation at all whether it's woodworking groups or family I have to go there to get a response and that weirdo founder seems to have a strong magnet drawing people in. It's a sad day when I can call my brother on the phone who lives in Florida and he don't answer the phone but I can go to FB and message him and get a response in 1-2 minutes.. That's exactly why I hate that place.. almost a cult of sorts.. and many don't see it like that. I recently bought a new planer and a new table saw.. posted about those new tools here and only a few people posted on those topics.. back in the day of those few regulars keeping conversations going there would have been 2-3 pages of replies / comments / story telling.. and the topic would change from planer brands to planer knives and dust collection etc. etc. Instead I got a couple of congrats on the new tool.. some take those new tool post topics as bragging or showing off, flaunting your money, new tool etc.. I just try to post topic starters.. many folks would turn those into conversations.. now they just dead end streets so to speak. Anyway you get the idea, there just no chatty folks on here, just lurkers.. until that changes it'll be dead here because people will gravitate to where the attention is at..

  25. + 1 for what John B just said, if a question has been answered the way I would have answered then I don't usually butt in. I have been heavily involved in setting up the new 'Kirkcaldy Men's Shed' and it is opening on the 21st May 2022. Quite a bit to do yet but we will get there. I will then need to see how many new members are interested in scroll saw, pyrography and wood turning and get programmes set up for them.

  26. Am I missing something with my planer? The hook-up for dust collection comes straight out the back of the planer. I would think they'd send you some sort of elbow to direst it out away from the outfeed lumber. I sold my old ryobi yesterday and I can see that my 4" hose from my dust collector will slip over the fitting in the back of the planer but unless I drop it down from the ceiling, get a elbow, or ? it's going to get knocked off when the board comes through. I'm sure I can find a way to tie up the hose out of the way but I'd have thought they'd have a easier ready to hook up elbow or something that'd make more sense. Obviously the engineer doesn't understand the machine operation.. My Ryobi was designed in a way that the chips come out the one side and your hose would / never could get in the way of the outfeed. So now that my rant is over, LOL.... How did those of you that have these DeWalt planers hook up your dust collection. I might not get back to my woodwork until mid summer.. I have my whole shop in disarray and I'm considering running piping all through the shop from my dust collector. I could pipe it down from the ceiling if I actually do pipe my whole shop out. Something I've been wanting to do but on the back burner, along with many other things. I may not even do any work this year and focus on getting the shop finished up they way I intended to several years ago, LOL

  27. They are trying to keep the price down I'm sure and that would add another $50 to the planer. I made my adapter for under $10 and it works great.

  28. Thanks, I think I found one that'll work well. My confusion is it seems like DW would know that it would need a elbow, LOL

As others have said, it is spring and there are lots of catch ups for me. Today I serviced the snow thrower and stored it and all the shovels(that means we will now have a big snow), early start on yard work, get mower and sprinkler system ready etc.....I have a couple of projects started but no time to finish them now.

  34. Yeah the planer is noisy and makes a big mess in a hurry if you don’t have some sort of dust collection. I guess I shouldn’t complain as it is a nice planer from what I read about them. Just seems like the chip outlet could have been a better design. I don’t know if I’m missing a part to it or that’s just how they came. Seems pretty silly to have the port straight out the back in the center of the outfeed area, lol. Maybe I’m missing the idea or a part for it. Who knows but I’ll figure something out.

    What's happening?!!!

I too was asking this question about why not many comments. I am slightly discouraged. So I did more homework. So I observed that views and comments are listed. I asked my son about these numbers. He has software engineering and seen this software before. Views are so high because so many automatic softwares are actually probing the topics. Additional factors is only a fraction of people will contribute. In the activity menu there is online viewers, now turn on the filter for logged in. Not many are logging in. Some villagers dont know english. So that also reduces the replies. So getting 11 replies in 3 weeks is a decent number for now. I see many people joining in the last few months. Also those replies count the original aurthor. Now some contributers have some really nice stuff and we all learn from them. FrankEV always asks for comment. So I give my comments. Sometimes my comments are more slightly funny. But I still give it. My stuff is so unique people dont say much. Or I mis-use the patterns. They dont know what to say. So I keep going and share my stuff anyway. Coming soon I have 2 picture tutorials submitted and being edited. I also message other villagers to ask stuff. So some content is not seen until my project is near completion. Working from home is ending. I have to go to work office 1 or 2 days a week. This village kept my interaction with new people during stay at home. THANK YOU. So my son says don't get caught up in the numbers views / replies. Just contribute and see where it goes. Okay 1 more observation, I wear my wooden cowboy hat to stores. I only get approached by people who like it. People that dont like it I dont hear their comment. So this also applies to this village. So we have a one way system. Not 1 question do I hear, why wear a wooden hat? To give the answer away... is I dont know why. So I wear it for now to see how bad the idea is. All my friends love the way it looks. I took it as a challenge to the wood turned hats. Also I also like stuff that has not been done. Thanks for reading / listening. I was able to get my opinions out in the open. Me. Mark Eason

    What's happening?!!!

Great observation Ray. I have noticed that too. And I am one of those who checks in every day but do not always have anything to post. I am doing more in woodworking but no longer exclusively in scrolling. And life has thrown in a few curve balls. We hosted a family get-together for Easter. It was a good time and it was great to see everyone but it did take some time away from the shop. Most recently I received a request from the local St Vincent de Paul Society to make a new sign for their new building. That has included quite a bit of scrolling but has also pushed my woodworking skills in new directions. Maybe I will post something in "Works in Progress". Last week I visited my doctor about pain in my thumbs. Turns out to be arthritis and he gave me shots of cortisone in both thumbs. And he gave me thumb braces and instructions to limit my use of my hands for the next several weeks. So, scrolling is ok, but no turning bowls on the lathe and no golf. On the interesting side, an acquaintance who makes guitars decided to clean out his shop. I wound up with lots of small pieces of exotic woods, many of them new to me. I will have fun playing with those. Cheers

    Charcuterie Tray

My wife asked me to make a Charcuterie Tray with those extra pieces of wood I had in my shop! I am still processing the concept of "extra pieces of wood". But she humors me, so I try to humor her. I finished it in time for Easter and you can see it loaded for the Easter family get-together. So, here it is. It is approximately 18" x 24". The sides are 1/2" black walnut. The bottom is all 1/4", several species including bubinga and black walnut (the extra wood I had lying around). We finished it with Boo's Mystery Oil and Boo's Board Cream. We had a great Easter get-together. Hoping you all had a good Easter.

  50. My grandson, Kyler, is always trying to get into our bank. He even pulled a shelf down on himself trying to get to it. He is okay. Well, I decided to make him one for his upcoming birthday (OK, not Christmas but close enough). I also put a little money in it. Now, do I give him the combo or let him try all 1000 combinations? Hmmm.
