  1. Not Usually Made This Time Of Year Report Quote Quote #1 Post by CharleyL » Mon May 02, 2022 1:04 pm I have a friend coming to visit soon that I won't likely see again for several years. She doesn't have any of the ones that I've been making over the past 18 years, so I decided to make her a full set. One of the mid size gets a pin (shown) attached for wearing on a sweater, etc. The other mid size becomes a necklace, the two smallest become ear rings, and the largest is just for display or hanging on the Christmas Tree. You can see by the included dime how small these are. I made and finished all of these, including clear lacquer spray and jewelry assembly in 2 1/4 hours yesterday. I have promised a few sets of ear rings to others, so will likely make and assemble them tomorrow. Then on to some larger projects. I need to make more boxes, so I think they are next on my list. 2. An Alex Fox pattern C-15. This basket is made from 1/4" solid Mahogany 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. The finish is 2 coats spray Lacquer Clear Gloss with sanding between coats. Comments welcome.

    Since I started . . .

Today is/was "organize day". I gathered up what' I've cut out since I started a year and a half ago and laid it out on one of the guest beds. This is what I came up with, minus the Christmas decorations and some things I've cut out and given away. I plan to finish the pieces hope to sell them at a farmers market this summer. Now I have to figure out how to display them - my wife said I couldn't take the bed!

    Bruce Dern

Bruce Dern as Asa "Long Hair" Watts from the 1972 John Wayne film, "The Cowboys." One of the meanest, back shooting baddies in the West. Love to hate him.

  5. The smallest do not usually survive cutting, unless made from hardwood, and if they do survive cutting they don't survive wearing as jewelry. I use Hard Maple and most survive quite well. The mid sizes can be made from Hard Maple, but I usually use White Poplar, being choosey about which boards that I pick up to avoid the green and brownish colors. This works well for the largest size too, but I had a carpenter friend who was bringing me off cuts of SPF construction lumber from job sites and I still have a significant amount of it, so the largest size is usually White Pine (avoiding knots) or Poplar. I was recently given some Soft Maple, so I will likely be using that for many of the larger sizes this year. I usually begin making them in the Fall, about mid September, when I change my shop over to make Christmas Gifts. This is the 18th year that I've made reindeer, but I couldn't get to my shop for most of last year, due to a health problem with my right leg. Only 6 reindeer were made last year during one very short shop visit. I have never sold any of my woodworking. I give the reindeer away during the Christmas Season, to any woman or teen girl who helps me in some way during the season of November through New Years. My doctors, nurses, cashiers, sales girls, etc. are all offered one at the completion of my transaction with them. It's usually held out toward them in my right hand, palm down, as I wish them "A Very Merry Christmas". When they reach out, I drop the reindeer in their hand. The ear ring and necklace versions cost me more in time and purchased jewelry fittings to make, so they are only given to "Special Women". My female doctors each have a set, as well as my Favorite Pharmacist, as well as all of the women in my family. The manager of my favorite restaurant and several of the better waitresses also have them. At one time, every female worker in the restaurant had them, but many have left the restaurant over this past two years and we have not been eating out since COVID either. We have now had our 2nd COVID boosters in early April, so we have started eating out occasionally again. This year, all of the new waitresses will likely get at least one reindeer for Christmas. The restaurant is called "Breakfastime". It's a chain of about 6 restaurants in Central North Carolina. They are open for breakfast and lunch from 6 AM to 3 PM seven days a week and one of them is only about 2 miles from here. Great food at reasonable prices. You get a full plate too, so you will never leave hungry. The two of us can usually eat very well there for less than $20. Charley

  6. Ray, I’ve made my own rods, I was concerned that the top triangular nut was a little stripped buy I’m cutting Russ Beard pattern now and everything is work well, thanks. I have a guy who can make me a few of those nuts just in case they do one day strip and damage the thread, I have one in my saw and a second one ready to go in in case of a emergency, all I do then is swap the tension rods and recycle the damaged one and it becomes the spare.

  7. Well stated Melanie. When I see a request for a pattern, I do try to find the link for the person as well. I have never shared a pattern that I have purchased, always direct them to the seller. I also really hate those people who just say "Google it". I think if the original poster found it, why can't they post the link?!

Attended a Market at the Goldfields Art Centre today from 10am - 2pm. It was inside, nice and cool. Not busy but steady. $40 for the stall. The stall looked a lot lighter on at 2pm, but I had $700+ dollars in the sky rocket. A good day all around.

    Bench

As some of you may know I set about building a new bench/stand from my King 16" I got last fall. After much planning and thinking on it I came up with what is in the picture. I wanted something heavy so I could minimize vibration. It made from (8) 2X4's and weights about 40 pounds. Best thing was I had the 2X4's on hand as I had purchased 37 of them prior to covid for a project that never got off ground, they were just hanging out in my garage. The center leg is not so wide as to make me uncomfortable while cutting. It's solid as a rock. No plans really, just started with an idea in my head and ran with it. Chris

  11. From, "The Guns Of Will Sonnett." Walter Brennan was also in The Real McCoys, Sergeant York, and lots of Western movies. The biggest thing I remember from watching The Guns Of Will Sonnett with my dad was his tagline, "No brag, just fact." I thought it was so cool.

  12. The original designer wants to control how their patterns are distributed. When they upload a pattern to SSV, it's saying it is a gift to the members of SSV. But I'm sure they'd be upset if that file is being shared among FB, other forums, other websites and blogs without their knowledge or consent. So, if it's not a pattern you designed yourself, you should point them to the place they can download it for themselves. Granted, on SSV, they have to be a member (membership is free) to access the Pattern Library. But I don't think that's too much to ask, especially if they're getting access to 5,000+ free scroll saw patterns. We limit access to the Pattern Library to members, because a few years back, we ran into someone on EBay stealing our patterns and reselling them. When I complained, they said it was Free and they can do whatever they want. I eventually got Ebay to intervene and shut down the theft. At any rate, sharing a link to where they can download the pattern themselves is the best approach.

Christopher: I don't know if you have tried it and rejected it or not - with that thought have you tried tilting the scroll saw toward you. Along with many others on the forum, I have set up my Ex so it has a 5 degree tilt toward me. It really helps the back strain and fatigue. It would be easy for you to slip some spacers under the saw's back feet to try it out. Bruce

I went from a beginner 16" to the Delta P-20, so that was quite a leap forward. I was sure that I wouldn't find anything better which is why I really hesitated to get something new. I really lover the Delta. After much research and getting input from everyone here at SSV I took the plunge and got the King. This thing, for me, is another leap forward in my scrolling ability. I've had it for about 6 months now, took some time to tune it, again the people here on SSV were invaluable to helping me get that done. But I gotta say I really love this saw. If you're thinking about getting one, don't hesitate, go for it! Chris

  36. Wanted to make a little something to give my mother on Mother's Day. This is a Steve Good pattern cut on 1/4 birch finished with natural stain and several coats of clear with light sanding between coats. The back is pine painted green or red in appropriate areas. I actually cut this double stack and the other one will go to my wife. Steve's pattern calls for a 1/4 inch rectangle around the outside edge but the wife liked it better without. I've said before, happy wife, happy life! I wish the lady members of the forum a Happy Mother's Day!

  39. meflick said it well. The patterns I share are for anyone's use so can be shared directly or as a link. It would be nice if the user was a SSV mwmber.

  40. The common courtesy that I try to follow is to share a direct link to where a pattern can be found if I can. If I can’t find the direct link, I would try to give a link back as best I can so here to the Village in general if I knew that was where I had found it. So, For example, if it’s a JGR pattern (or another one I had purchased somewhere), I would share the direct link to the pattern so it can be purchased. If I couldn’t give the direct link, I would give the link to her home page. I would do the same even when the pattern has been shared for free somewhere. For example, if it’s a Steve Good pattern, I would first try to find the original blog post where he shared the pattern and provide the direct link back to it. If I couldn’t easily find it, I would provide a link back to his home page of his blog. in this instance, I would do as you did, say where I had gotten the original pattern from, the Scrollsaw Village website, and then provide a direct link back to where it can be found here. (I signed out and checked and you would need to be a member and signed in to access patterns shared it looks like so they would need to join to be able to see and download.) So, for the pattern in question here, I would post a link back to it here and note you would need to be a member or join in order to see and download from here: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/44200-two-heads-and-entwined-bodies-pdfs/ However, since in this instance, I also happen to know that Frankorona actually first made and shared the original Image that FrankEV used to made the pattern from, I would also share that note with the link to the pattern thread indicating such so he was acknowledged as the source for the image and photo Frank used to make the pattern from (as Frank noted when he first shared his own photos of the piece he cut here): https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/44162-two-heads/#comment-475942 And this next thread is where Frankorona first shared his images the month prior (noting he used photo from the internet, so not his original image either ) and from which Frank made the pattern from (because Frankorona didn’t have an actual pattern to share, just his photo but gave Frank permission to create the pattern.) https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/44050-modernist-figures/#comment-474724 In this instance, sharing those three links may seem excessive to some, but to me, it’s all needed to give proper credit to Frankorona for first sharing his photo of his work, then giving Frank permission to use his photo to create his own version and to then share the pattern Frank created with members of the village. I feel it is important to give proper credit so in this particular instance, that credit would be to both Frankorona and then Frank. Normally, it would not be quite so “complicated” however. The only time I might “share” directly would be if someone had given specific permission to post and share elsewhere on the pattern it’s self. (I have seen this done). However, even then I would still attempt to give a link back if I could. Since the patterns shared here are shared by members for members of the village, in my humble opinion, I would not post one I downloaded from here somewhere else or pass it on to someone but would point them back to where they could find it just as I would if it was a pattern I had purchased.

    Shop Projects

I was a substitute teacher for 12 years in elementary schools and also found that kids don't realize they are learning when they are having fun. I try to incorporate that into all the toys I have been making. I saw this puzzle as math, science, critical thinking and pattern recognition. This puzzle is going to a little three-year old boy who is basically non-verbal but loves dinos - I hope it will help bring him out of his shell.

  42. I share many of my converted patterns in Pattern Announcements, or just message me and ask. I don't share patterns that aready exist by others (like fron the pattern gallery) or those I may have purchased and have not done any kind of conversion that makes it unique to me. Just note that most of my patterns need to be printed on 11x17 paper.
