Thanks to @FrankEV for giving me a nudge along, I finished this tonight as a gift for the school bursar, (Karen) as she is leaving tomorrow. I like cutting things fine This is the first cube type tissue box that I made. There where lots of paper and printouts trying to get the design and dimension looking correct. It is made from 12mm pine with Jarrah trim. Has Royal Blue felt fixed to 3mm ply as a lining and backing to the cut outs.| Finished with 3 coats 30% gloss lacquer Mary and the Southern Cross is the school logo Don't know what I did to the pics this time, they came out small ?2 points

Welcome back, Brenda. Sounds like a triple whammy for you and yours - and over the holidays as well.2 points

She loved it . She planted wildflower seeds in it.2 points -
TY. I have, and use, the same hand miter saw. Works well and very accurate. That Jarrah is beautiful. And TY for the info on the 30% Lacquer. I'm not set up to spray with a gun so forced to use spray cans. Our cans are gloss, semi-gloss and satin. Sounds like 30% is like our satin.2 points

Thanks Marg. Yes, things are better now. Tony is much recovered, my daughter back on her feet and all is well with the world2 points

It wasn't last year but it could quite possible be this year, because when the neighbours came round they thought it was a terrific idea and said that they may be interested if they had enough things to sell. Last year the Saturday was a lot better than the Sunday. Marg2 points

Thanks Dick and Marg, I should of included a spare box of tissues. As Karen had quite an emotional day with the School kids making a presentation and the staff another . Not to mention a few individual gifts from staff and parents. She will be missed, but we all have to take advantage of opportunities when they are placed in our way.2 points

Thanks Frank. The Lacquer I purchased. It is an Australian brand "Maxiwood" made by Wattle. The 30% is the amount of shine (reflection in) the finished project with 100% being full gloss. It gives a very nice soft natural look with a glass like feel. I use a spray gun to apply it. It last quite awhile as it is thinned 2 parts thinner to 1 part lacquer prior to spraying. The edge trim around the top of the box I mitred with a hand mitre saw as it is quite delicate being only 3mm thick and Jarrah is very hard and old Jarrah can be brittle. I only use 2nd hand Jarrah. I do have a very nice Dewalt mitre saw but I find doing things by hand on delicate stuff is better. The corner pieces are not mitred they are cut in an L shape on my table saw.2 points

Most make puzzles or leash / key racks from these patterns.. I make them into clocks.. or ornaments. As of a little over a year ago I'm no longer a pet parent.. Miss my dogs and cats but really allergic to cats and dogs bother me some too, now that the kids are kinda grown and wanting to start doing some traveling etc. we have not took on the pet parent responsibility just yet.. SO, I just make them from wood and sell them.2 points

She will not only be very pleased with the gift but you will be thought of every time she takes a tissue from it. I am sure that this nice box will be around for as many years as she is. Great job and well thought out. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

1st Cube Tissue Box
Blaughn and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I had to look up "bursar" as I had never heard that term before. As for the tissue box, I like your use of the contrasting wood trim. It adds to the visual appeal of the piece, without competing with the fretwork. Nice work!2 points -
Excelent Job. Love that each face has a different cutting. The dark trim on the light box is just beautiful. What tool did you use to miter the corner trim? 30% Gloss Lacquer? Mix your own? Spray or brush on? You should not tease and put something out there that is different with out an explanation..2 points

I love the experiments plaque a lot. They are all marvelous. I must try the watercolor pencils. Marg1 point -
Even though I haven't post anything I have been working but I have also been teaching a 19yo girl to scroll and she is loving it. Any way here are a few things I have made. They are all Sue Mey patterns. The first Christmas Bells are made from 2.5mm Bamboo, the second ones are made from 4mm pine and so are the gnomes. They are all for a Christmas in July driveway market at my daughters. Marg1 point
-
Thanks Bill. To be quite honest I had never heard of the term actually being used until the Missus started teaching at a catholic School. I had various sizes of jarrah trim all over the bench trying to get the proportions correct. What I see in my minds eye sometimes does not translate to the real world1 point

finish this bison
wombatie reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Marg, There used to be a lot of Bison in the South Dakota area and I understand that the parks dept. in that area will be the people this plaque will be gifted to. One of the colleges there call themselves the Buffalo's with is another term for Bison. that is why this pattern was selected. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Soda Can Covers

Great idea. I don't drink soda but trying to figure out if it might work for wine glasses!1 point -
I liked your pattern Frank so I took a try at it. Cut from 1/4 Maple with a 1/8BB backer using a #2 spiral blade. I made the frame from alder and stained it. I must say the painting was challenging-getting the colors in the right place on the backer was time consuming. I probably went about the hard way1 point

I bought a Cameo Silhouette recently. Been experimenting with vinyl and sticker embellishment's. Scrolling is very simple, but it was more of an experiment with my craft cutter. The tag and heart are cut with a scroll saw. The "Love" is red vinyl. The Photo is a sticker with foil embossing. These are for a Valentine's Day tiered tray display.1 point
