Anyone using China Birch?
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I bought several sheets of BBply once I seen the price hikes and heard that it may be hard to get it.. I've got about a 2-3 year supply.. Meanwhile I have been searching alternatives.. and so far I really like the quality of the Columbia Forest Project Panels from Home Depot.. I use the thin 5/32" stuff but they have 1/4" also. Comes in a variety of species but so far I've only tried the Maple. I'm using it for Portraits and Ornaments so far but I also will be trying it with signs that'd have a backer on them. In the past I've also used this for cutting jigsaw puzzles and had good results. I'm not sure how the pricing is on this stuff compared to BBply, I know it was a bit more $$ than BBply back when I tried it.. but it is available. I'm not sure what you're trying to make but also have read about flooring underlayment? or something like that.. maybe someone else can chime in on that stuff.2 points -

ADDING COLOR TO SCROLLING
angela2 reacted to john nelson for a topic
I hope I am doing this right......I am computer challenged. For the past few years I have been developing a method of adding details and color to scroll-saw projects. The method is not new as Fisher-Price Toy Company used this method to add detail and color to their toys in the 40"s and 50"s before plastic. I would like to find 5 or 6 scrollers (of any level) that would interested in trying this method and tell us your opinion. I would like to know, what you think, if you liked the process and the results or not, if you would do other projects using this method and if you had any suggestions or ideas how to improve it. If you are interested, I would be happy to send the first 5 or 6 scrollers free, full size patterns, required art work and instructions to complete one add color to scrolling project. Just choose one of the project below and send me your mailing address. You are not under any obligation what so ever. If you do try it, please let us all know what you think. Thank you. This is the second of Americana 12 by Jim Blume. This is pretty much the same as the first cut, Oak ply stained natural, black backer, except the truck was tinted with Minwax Expresso stain rather than watercolor paint. Again, the frame is actual framing material with gray wash and a little natural stain to darken it up just a touch.1 point

Through rain & wind!!
frankorona reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Did a "summer" market today. Debated going because of the weather. Decided to go because they were doing, and did, a lot of advertising. Shoulda stayed home. Glad I wore my down vest with rain jacket and had gloves. Would have prefered the winter coat. Temperature was 10 celcius with wind gusting to 60 kph and intermittentrain showers. The cinder blocks held the borrowed canopy. Couldn't do the setup as planned because of the wind. Sales wise, I made table cost plus $20. The bragging right is I survived the sh*t weather.1 point -

Sorry the weather didn't cooperate, Barb. I'm doing my first "show" this weekend... actually a community yard sale. I don't really have a lot to display. Maybe 20 pieces. As far as the weather here, it will probably be in the upper 90s (Fahrenheit) and high humidity. My main objective is to show some of my pieces and hopefully get a couple commissions.1 point -
Always use a piece of hardwood or MDF behind (if standing up) or below (if laying down flat) the cut panel when torching fuzzies. Never try to burn the fuzzies off without a back up board to prevent the flame from licking through and charring the good side. Clean up fuzzies first with a sanding mop and then use the torch moving it quite quickly like spray painting to get the last remnants of fuzzies. BTW, great work. Very well done.1 point

Anyone using China Birch?
crupiea reacted to Greatgrandpawrichard for a topic
I recently was given a couple of 12 X 12 inch sheets of Flooring Underlayment to try. It cuts Great with very little fuzzies on the back. Glue sticks great to it, one side will take paint extremely well and one side will take stains perfectly. Plus it has a pretty cool pattern and color to it. I can forsee myself using it more from now on! Dick1 point -
Yes, truly sad that everything went to China. Time to bring manufacturing back to this country.1 point

I think I have the same wood. Our club bought 4 pallets of it from a guy, he used it for flooring and stair treads, it looked very cool. I have used some in scroll work but you needs to be very selective on the boards you use, there are hidden cracks and weak spots throughout the boards. I have also used some in crosses I made. I love working with it, it smalls like molasses when you work with it.1 point

Travis, In my thread about the rose with a name I have posted several pictures. I've taken all of them with my phone, in the same orientation, yet when I post them I have no idea what orientation they will be in until I insert them into the post. I don't see any option for rotating them to get them all in the same orientation, is there any fix? Or is it just how it is? Thanks Wichita1 point

My wife and I are trying very hard not to buy anything from China. I'd be looking for some other choice. JMHO.1 point

Thanks. I wanted to give it just enough color to stand out with the grain of the wood showing through. As I mentioned, I used watercolor on this piece and kept it thin. The other piece, (Posted as Americana 12 2 of 2) I used stain. The reason I decided to add color was really a mishap. I was trying to burn the fuzzies of the back with a torch on a rather windy day. I have a 12 x 12 door on my shop and about the time I was burning the area of the grill on 2 of 2, a gust of wind blew the flame through the grill area and scorched the front of the piece. I used Minwax Espresso stain in an attempt to hide where it was scorched. I liked the way it turned out enough that I thought I'd try the watercolor on the other piece.1 point

I am the new tooth fairy. The teeth are for my dentist. The pattern is a modified Steve Good pattern and the are made from 3/4" pine. The skate border pattern is by Tulsa Scroller and is made from 2.5mm bamboo. I gave this one to a restaurant owner who only does gluten free food, my daughter is a coeliac and can only eat gluten free food. Marg1 point

Hi all. I thought I posted this update, but I guess I must have not hit the submit button. At any rate, some of you may have noticed the ranks have changed. The old rank system was set up 12 years ago when having 1500 posts was a lot of posts. That isn't true anymore. You're a chatty bunch....LOL Plus, it didn't take much to shoot to the top of the rank tier. So I wanted to balance it out a bit more. We have a new system in place now. We now have 10 separate ranks. The higher the rank, the harder it is to achieve. You can find your rank badge off the side of your avatar, as well as your profile. Ranks are calculated by points. And points are awarded for doing different things on SSV. For example; posting a new thread is worth 10. Responding to one is 5. Points for uploading to galleries, helping members, emoting, joining groups, downloads, following members or content, etc. Points aren't really visible, as far as I can tell, and are calculated behind the curtain. I wouldn't put too much stock in your rank, though. Its just a silly little thing that adds a bit of fun to the site. And don't put too much weight into the rank name. I just picked rank names based on scroll sawing themes and how long you've been on SSV (it's so much better than Rank 1, Rank 2, etc). You may have been scrolling for decades, but your rank is Apprentice Scroller. That's just a title you have on SSV and doesn't reflect your skill level. Anyway, that's what those symbols mean. Just a bit of flair for fun.1 point

I quit drinking a long time ago. 1991. So I am not up on Wine accessories. So I have been looking at Etsy on Wine Decor. What a huge industry. How do I compete with artists that drink wine?? They are so creative. Wine glass stem charms, rings for glasses. really. Oh they also have a "Clog wine bottle holder". https://www.etsy.com/listing/645382788/vintage-wooden-wine-holder-clog-bottle?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=wine+decor&ref=sr_gallery-35-14&frs=1&organic_search_click=11 point

John, I just cut some scrap book paper (card stock) to fit the spaces. The rest is a dark blue. I have read your article in adding colour and will give it a try on another project.1 point -
I can't get used to these bloody phones. Sometimes when I upload the pics I have taken on my phone to the computer they appear upside down in the thumbnails, but when I pull them into some editing software etc they magically turn the right side up. It's all from another dimension I think1 point
-
If you're posting them to your Gallery, I think you have some options. But if it's a forum post, the pictures are how you shot them. However, if you edit them in your phone with some color correction or cropping, it should fix it. At least that's what my phone does.1 point

When I download pictures I first download to a file folder and then that allows me to rotate pictures as needed. Plus I now have a file of pictures for later use.1 point
