Sue Mey pattern
GusGustin and 7 others reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
My wife wanted a clock for the kitchen(wine motif) I sent and email to Sue Mey and asked her if she could make a pattern since she did not have one on her site, well a couple of days latter she sent me the pattern which I promptly purchased and this is the result. Since the thickness of the wood was 3/16” I stacked cut the maple and walnut together, 2 clocks at the same time. my wife chose the maple with the walnut background, the other one goes in the inventory.8 points -
First Cross
frankorona and 7 others reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
I've been asked to set up a booth at a community yard sale in my area this weekend and had to crank out a few projects to display/attempt to sell. This is my first cross. It is a Steve Good pattern cut using 1/4 maple ply for the front and hummingbirds. The back is 1/4 underlayment. The cross is stained with Minwax Natural, and the edges of the backer and hummingbirds are stained with Minwax Red Oak. The paint is artist acrylic paint. The piece was sprayed with four coats clear with light sanding with 320 grit between coats. My wife has already claimed this one if it doesn't sell.8 points -
Through rain & wind!!
frankorona and 5 others reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Did a "summer" market today. Debated going because of the weather. Decided to go because they were doing, and did, a lot of advertising. Shoulda stayed home. Glad I wore my down vest with rain jacket and had gloves. Would have prefered the winter coat. Temperature was 10 celcius with wind gusting to 60 kph and intermittentrain showers. The cinder blocks held the borrowed canopy. Couldn't do the setup as planned because of the wind. Sales wise, I made table cost plus $20. The bragging right is I survived the sh*t weather.6 points -
Last week I ordered a Pegas Band Saw from @Denny Knappen. As I expected, nothing but excellent customer service. I received it today. It's all set up and I am cutting with it. Each size blade you have to have matching guide bearings. The bottom one is kind of a pain in the butt to change. I put a #5 blade and bearing on it which is the smallest it will accommodate. I imagine I will just leave that one on. I've made a few test cuts and I am totally happy with it. I've been doing a lot of intarsia, that's why I bought it. It will cut any hardwood like butter. I tested it on Wenge and it amazed me how easy it cut. If you do a lot of intarsia I would strongly recommend one.3 points

This is the second of Americana 12 by Jim Blume. This is pretty much the same as the first cut, Oak ply stained natural, black backer, except the truck was tinted with Minwax Expresso stain rather than watercolor paint. Again, the frame is actual framing material with gray wash and a little natural stain to darken it up just a touch.2 points

I have had days like you had Barb. Love your setup. You would have made plenty, if Momnature would have been nicer.1 point -
Well at least you tried, I would have called it a day before I got into the car. Marg1 point

I really doubt it. I would guess it would take almost as much to resharpen as it would to make new. I would imagine mine will be broke by the time it need sharpened.1 point

barb.j.enders reacted to John B for a topic
Good on you for giving it a shot Barb. Outside markets are always hit and miss. Many a-time I have loaded the ute the night before, with a forecast of a nice day coming up, only to find, when we get set up that the winds are terrible and sometimes the heat just keeps people away too. You had a win, covered costs and have $20 for some more timber, or maybe hot soup1 point -
I wonder, just out of curiousity, if they will ever offer any sort of blade re-sharpening service. I know that would be asking a lot but if they can make the blades, they should also be able to sharpen them. I'll be watching your posts.1 point

Very nice edge. I think there might be a few problems cutting puzzles. I don't think you can back the blade up very much. It won't turn quite as sharp as I can on my scroll saw. I will sure give it a try and let you know. The dust collection on it is excellent.1 point

Through rain & wind!!

When I first started I did outside shows. Never again. I got tired of fighting the elements. There are plenty of inside shows around my area. Glad you made your expenses.1 point -
Congratulations Dave! How are the edges of the cut. Do they need sanding? It seems like it would be good for stand up puzzles as long as the puzzle doesn’t have any inside cuts. Give us a review after you have put some hours on it.1 point

Awesome pattern and cutting. I love the way you framed it.1 point

I use my sanding mop frequently as I proceed on a large project. Maybe every 1/8 to 1/4 of the cutting area. I find by doing so, I get less drag on the cut panel allowing it to slide more smoothly while cutting. I use the torch for the final fuzzie removal. I also wax my table as soon as I feel any drag occuring.1 point

Anyone using China Birch?
crupiea reacted to Greatgrandpawrichard for a topic
I recently was given a couple of 12 X 12 inch sheets of Flooring Underlayment to try. It cuts Great with very little fuzzies on the back. Glue sticks great to it, one side will take paint extremely well and one side will take stains perfectly. Plus it has a pretty cool pattern and color to it. I can forsee myself using it more from now on! Dick1 point -
Yes, truly sad that everything went to China. Time to bring manufacturing back to this country.1 point

Anyone using China Birch?
new2woodwrk reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I bought several sheets of BBply once I seen the price hikes and heard that it may be hard to get it.. I've got about a 2-3 year supply.. Meanwhile I have been searching alternatives.. and so far I really like the quality of the Columbia Forest Project Panels from Home Depot.. I use the thin 5/32" stuff but they have 1/4" also. Comes in a variety of species but so far I've only tried the Maple. I'm using it for Portraits and Ornaments so far but I also will be trying it with signs that'd have a backer on them. In the past I've also used this for cutting jigsaw puzzles and had good results. I'm not sure how the pricing is on this stuff compared to BBply, I know it was a bit more $$ than BBply back when I tried it.. but it is available. I'm not sure what you're trying to make but also have read about flooring underlayment? or something like that.. maybe someone else can chime in on that stuff.1 point -
Americana 12 (2 of 2)
heppnerguy reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
The color is actually the result of an accident... burning fuzzies with a torch and the wind blew the flame through the grill area of the truck. Tried light sanding but the char was too deep. Decided to try the darker stain. I'm happy with the results.1 point -
